      hi gaieus,

thanks. well, there is a tradition in brazilian architecture of providing a spot for people like mayors, governors and the like to speak from above to the people. a little like the pulpits in churches. in administrative buildings it tends to be a balcony, like this one, which faces the new square. the yellow was a way to call attention to it, but it would probably end up being some more discreet color.

do make the best of what is left of the weekend.

      hi gaieus,

perhaps better than to explain you anything about the project is to direct you to two places where you can find many other images: my fotolog (http://www.fotolog.com/edsonmahfuz/ - on the left, look it up on recent photos posted in august and september 2006) and my website (http://www.mahfuz.arq.br/ - click on portfolio-->institutional-->hortolandia.

anyway, the thing you ask about is a kind of marquee with vegetation climbing on it. it hovers over a pedestrian square and it is intended to give shade to it. I am sure the other illustrations I directed you to above will give you a clearer idea.

however, do not hesitate to ask me about any questions you might have.

      best regards.

Update: In testing, I discovered a bug internal to SketchUp that prevents ImageProfile from working on Mac, but things are fine on the PC version of SketchUp.

is this final or are you looking for a way around it?

    • Town Center Study

this is an image from the development stage of a project I entered in a national design competition for a town center in eastern brasil (2006). it is plain SU. later on we did renders in 3DS and fotoshop.

what is being shown is the town hall, to the left (the yellow box sticking out of it is the mayor's office) and one of the admin bldgs in front. the bldgs are basically steel and glass.

      to be continued.

Here is one of the golf bag components, at low accuracy setting - let me know what you think of the quality. High accuracy only gets better 😄

amazing quality. I just cannot wait to be able to use it. congratulations.

      rick,

yes, it makes it possible for virtually any image to be turned into a component. look fwd to it.

    • RE: SU as design tool

thank you all for the kind words. it is very nice to know that one's work is appreciated.

patrice, believe it or not, mine is a very small practice. it used to be just me and 2 students, now its me and 3 girls from the school where I teach. occasionally I team up with a colleague for a competition, but the pro work is done by myself with the help of the students. perhaps what explains the output is that I love what I do; I usually say that I am very lucky to be able to earn a living doing something I love, and being able to combine my practice with teaching.

by the way, technical drafting is done in vectorworks which is way better than autocad. however, I am not happy with its rendering companion, renderworks, and am thus looking for a rendering software that would not mean a huge time investment to learn. needless to say, 3D is done in SU by me. what is amazing with SU is that it allows me to create and refine a design while drawing, which I had not been able to do with other software.

      my best to all.

      patrice,

thanks a lot. I certainly shall post more of my work here, but will keep what was not done with SU out. that other stuff can be seen at my website.

    • SU as design tool

I use SU essentially as a design tool in my architectural practice. it allows me to think in 3D and test the sun control in most situations.

this is one of my first tries at it, a study for a house addition that faces the sunset hence the movable sun screens. this is not meant as a final presentation image, but as something to convey the basic design idea for the clent's preliminary approval.

it was done in an oldish eMac 700 Mhz, 640 Mb RAM, and a meager NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics card with 32 MB (i bought a great iMac Intel since then).

      regards to you all.

      tig,

i use an iMac Core 2 Duo (Intel processor), running mac os 10.4.9, units: meters, dimensions of the box are the standard ones offered by the dialogue (width 1.8, height 1.5, depth 1.2), SU Pro 6.0.514.

      thanks, tig

the french name went away but there still is something weird going on. what you can see in the attached picture is the result of clicking twice along the green axis (and thus defining a line parallel to it) and then return. it did mirror the box but the new one is below the ground plane. what could be the reason for that?

    • Weird behaviour

there is something weird happening in my machine. I have installed mirror 3.1 but it does not appear in either the Plugins menu or the Context menu. in its stead i get miroir de la selection which is also a mirroring script but certainly not the one that I installed.

I suspect it may have to do with some older script I had there but I just do not know how to get rid of it. any clues?

      mike,

regarding new releases of Mac OS i prefer to act like i do with recently opened restaurants: let them setlle down and iron out all the wrinkles. after all the app companies have upgraded their apps to the new system then i jump in. i have no beta tester adventurousness in this regard.

i have had enough with little conflicts and incompatibilities during my time: my entry in the mac world was under system 7!

    • RE: Naming Layers [Architectural use generally...]

      hi, andrew

rest assured your contribution is of utmost importance. organizing a model is very important; it is key to managing complex models, i would say.

it always amazes me that most models i download (from other sources than this board) are very sloppy organization-wise: in general their elements are not grouped nor organized in layers. someone has suggested this is done so that other people cannot manipulate those models. i frankly do not believe it.

i am adopting the kind of reasoning you kindly showed to us. thanks again.

    • RE: Sketchup 7?

one of the key issues, if google wants SU to grow up, is to make it take advantage of the machines available. it is ridiculous to have a core 2 or core 4 chip and not to be able to use its processing power to the full when modelling in SU.

Come to think of it, there is a thread about anti SU snobbery, now if the next "pro version" included a built in render engine, texture editor and additional modeling tools (bolean included) and the free version a basic learning addition without the bells and whistles, we may be taken more seriously.

it is my opinion that one's credibility has to do much more with the quality of one's output than with the apps we use. in the past, when vectorworks was called minicad, people used to laugh at its name but had to agree in the end that one could produce very good stuff with it.

furthermore, let us for a moment accept that SU is for hobbyists, not for serious pros. in this case, people like you, solo, who are capable of creating amazing work with SU, should be held in much greater esteem than people who use mammoths like maya to create the same thing.

    • RE: Beach project, any ideas??

      mateo,

what i was referring to is the idea of making one or all beaches follow a consistent look (miami, copacabana, it does not really matter).

but i have nothing against umbrellas, trees, etc. my suggestions would be to create pergolas, bars with verandahs, places for groups and couples. you can get a warmth-feeling arrangement with wood, bamboo, fabric, color. all this without resembling directly another place.

once i saw in florida how they create wooden walkways over the dunes, a great way to protect the environment and still be able to use it.

decks are a good idea too, people like wood everywhere. another idea would be to create some kind of pool with sea water, much in the way siza did in the outskirts of oporto.

i hope i helped you in some way.
