I agree Dave, I have never been much impressed with the layout facility. I mainly make furniture, and the layout of parts into a board provides no help when you have boards of random width and length, want to select for figure, or need to work around flaws - which for me is every time. However, the generation of a cutlist is invaluable.

For sure it's of little use for board layout, but sheet goods layout doesn't have the same range of issues... so there is value in providing at least a starting point for material optimization.

I don't know how good/sophisticated the layout algorythms are in CutList: I could never get the function to work in CutLister, but I will at least give it a try with CutList.

I revised the code so it drops the leading 0. I have the corrected file on my PC at home and could send it to you via a PM.

      I'd appreciate that, thanks.

I guess there is one thing to be concerned with. Don't use commas in component definition names. Since the file is a comma separated values file, added commas can throw off the data in the cells.

Never use commas in my naming conventions, so won't be an issue... but definitely a good rule to apply in any context.

I've done a couple of blog posts on using the plugin. If you haven't seen them, you might find them useful.

I actually just finished reading this one on Design. Click. Build.

      — and yes it was very useful as a review of how to use it effectively. Works essentially the same as Cutlister (which was a fork of the original CutList), but it's been a while since I used it, so your tutorial caught me up. Lots of great stuff on that blog, so again thanks!

I'll be using it on my mac, so I hope that an svg export opened in Firefox will give me the sheet layout function. (I understand that there are issue with the web dialogs in Safari?). Do you use it with your mac or only on Windows?

Yes I'll be exporting as a CSV. I mostly use the 32mm metric system for cabinetry, but for building projects I use fractional Imperial. In excel though, I enter everything decimal and use a fractional display format.

Is there a caution with fractions?

Thanks for the reply Dave. That's sad news that the author passed last winter.

I've just downloaded CutList and I'll give it a try. Good to know it plays nice in 2015.

Here is some inspiration for those of you struggling with getting everything into the space available to your client.

Love it! I live in a much smaller space than that, so some of his ideas wouldn't work —like the double bed under the porch— but I really like the design and execution.

Nice blend of incredibly efficient space design and a cool aesthetic. (Though the five flights of narrow stairs to get up to it are a serious negative)

Makes me wonder if a 2014 license or upgrade can be bought at this point (speaking in general)... Seems it should be allowed as people will obviously have reasons NOT to want 2015 so early. One should have a choice.

I agree. Or Trimble could simply include a second license key for the previous version (2014 in this case) on purchase. As Driven pointed out upthread, I would have had both licenses if I had only purchased a day sooner.

Either way, there are always issues with new releases — either the stability of the app itself; OS upgrade issues (i.e. Yosemite); or of compatibility of necessary extensions/drivers. Having both versions would allow the user to navigate the transition period based on their needs, until full stability/compatibility is reached with the newly-released version... without any attendant loss of productivity/functionality.

To be fair to Trimble, I haven't requested a 2014 license key as of yet — and maybe they would be happy to issue one. Just seems more user-friendly (and less work for their support team) if the second key was included as a matter of policy.

    • Cutlist or Cutlister?

Haven't used Cutlister since SU8, so wondering if anyone has used it (or Cutlist) sucessfully in 2015?

Also curious if Dave R has any thoughts on which version —CutLister vs CutList— works better?

(I posted here instead of the Plugins forum, since it is specifically for woodworking... under the impression that it would be more likely seen by the relevant audience. But maybe it should be posted in Plugins?)

BUT even in Windows it's a superfluous menu-option.
      To select all Layers...
Highlight the first one in the list, scroll down the list, hold Shift and select the last one in the list - all Layers in the list are now highlighted.
Similarly holding Ctrl [MAC Cmd?] allows you to select/deselect individual items in the list...

This is basic computer-dialog list manipulation 101...

Well obviously I'm a simpleton... thanks for taking the time to give the explanation.

Thanks for the reply Dan. If it will be a lot of work to bring it up-to-date (assuming he would be amenable to someone else tackling his code), then I wouldn't expect anyone to take it on.

I guess I was hoping that it was a simple fix — both in code and rights. It is an incredibly useful plugin and it's too bad that it didn't find a wider audience.

    • [request] VisMap 2 update/fix

I'm hoping that one of the plug-in authors here can take a look at Martin Rinehart's VisMap 2 and figure out what's broken in 2014/2015. I know it's an older plug-in, but I find it indispensable for complex models with lots of scenes/layers — and there's nothing else like it.

      http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=323%26amp;t=23029%26amp;p=408349%26amp;hilit=vismap#p408349

I'm not sure if it worked in 2013, but it worked well in SU8. In both 2014/15 it doesn't crash or cause a bugsplat; the windows work fine and the map populates properly with the layer/scene info. (Get Data from Model)
      Screen Shot 2014-11-12 at 4.32.16 PM.pngScreen Shot 2014-11-12 at 4.32.57 PM.png
What's broken is the 'Send Data' function which updates layer/scene visibility based ion changes made in the map window. Not sure how involved a fix would be, but if it's something simple, maybe someone could tackle it.

I see that some of Martin's other plugins are available in the Sketchucation store, though there's no sign of activity from him since the original posting. Not sure why he didn't include Vismap, though I suppose if there was a 2013 compatibility issue at the time he might not have wanted to bother updating it.

It would be great if anyone is willing to take a go at it. Thanks in advance.

    • 'Select All' option missing from Layers Details menu

Since this seems like a newbie question, I thought I'd post it here: Is there not a simple way to turn all layers on or off at once?

From the Knowledge Centre I got this:
      Screen Shot 2014-11-12 at 2.38.10 PM.png

But I've checked in SU8/2014/2015 (mac) and there is no Layers/Details menu entry for 'Select All', only 'Purge' and 'Color by Layer'. Is it a Windows-only thing?

Seems I must have missed something obvious, because there surely must be a way to do this?

I missed that line. So db go the SU2015 license instead of for SU2014.

That's it. As I said in the original post (maybe a bit convolutely), once I realized that 2015 had been released and that my license was for it, there was no issue adding the license to Pro 2015. I just didn't realize that each version had a different license, and was hoping to enable Pro 2014 so I could use my 3D mouse until they release the 2015 driver.

So I have my answer: I'll just have to wait until 3Dconnexion gets their act together. Hard to know how much business SU users represent to them, but given their promotion efforts here on SCF, I would have thought that they'd be a little more on the ball with the timing.

      Hi all,

we are in the testing phase of the next release. As I cannot predict how the testing will be I cannot make any statement about a release date. We plan to provide the new plugin "soon".

Their latest post this week was a little more forthcoming, and I just hope he's right about days, not weeks:

      Hi,

We are in the final testing phase and try to make the plug-in available ASAP for you.

However, some issues found during testing have pushed us back a little bit (I am talking about a few days – hopefully this week, not several weeks or months). In the meantime, whilst not ideal, you may want to consider re-installing SketchUp 2014 just until we can provide you with the new plug-in. We do apologize for the delay and fully understand your frustrations. Please be assured we are working as fast as possible to get you all back up and running with your 3D mice in SketchUp 2015.

In the meantime I guess I'm stuck in Make 2014 until the driver update is released. Not the end of the world, but a bit frustrating.

    • Finally bought SU Pro... migration headaches :(

A year later than originally planned, I finally purchased a Pro license... ironically on the very day that Pro 2015 was released (without realizing it).

Went to add the license to SU 2014 and it rejected it as invalid. Tried calling the support line, but it was so busy they were only taking messages for call-backs.

Went to the knowledge centre to try and resolve on my own and saw the 2015 is here notice — so downloaded 2015 and added the license without further incidence. All good. Went to sketchucation store and downloaded my plugin bundle. Awesomely easy!

Then opened a model and tried to navigate with my Space Mouse... no joy. More searching on-line and find out that between SU and 3DX they fumbled the timing of the driver re-write necessary to support 2015. 3DX is fuzzy about exactly when the new driver will be released: 'soon' (which could mean a day / week / month).

So after finally springing for Pro, a week later I'm still stuck in 2014 Make — because it's impossibly slow and frustrating to model without my 3D mouse, and there doesn't seem to be a way to add the license to 2014.

Back story complete, here's my question: Is a pro license meant to be valid across different versions of SU?(i.e. 2014/15). If so, any guesses as to why it's rejecting the license number in 2014?

      Thanks
