      hi!

i've noticed that when i zoom out of a drawing the pan/orbit functions start to lag. it doesn't seem to matter how much geometry there is; i can work without issue on a complex model up close, but if i zoom out on something simple (like a couple of rectangles) i start getting lag when i do big sweeping orbits.

      any ideas?

hopefully this is a related post...

here are some presentation drawings from william o'brien jr, an architect whose work i admire. i was wondering if anyone could tell me what program is used for these drawings? they're very soft and almost cartoonish (in my opinion), so i was wondering if maybe it was a combination of sketchup and photoshop? yes? no?

      thank you!

    • Best way to make organic, spider-web like forms?

      hi!

i want to try to do some stuff like this:

      Link Preview Image
      Protohouse

The Protohouse project was developed in the Architectural Association School's Design Research Lab within the 'behavioral matter' studio of Robert Stuart-Smith. The Protohouse investigated the...

      Tumblr (protohouse.tumblr.com)

what plugins should i get? is there an easy way to sort of 3d design these organic shapes? i was thinking maybe some combination of 'draw on surface' tools (freehand drawing on a sphere, for example), and then the follow me tool over the lines to give it the desired thickness?

      any other suggestions?

      thanks!

this is the first thing I've posted to the gallery - i've seen a LOT of better/nicer images here, but you got to start somewhere.

basically i did everything in sketchup, then i hit the 'R' button in vray and didn't change any settings, and then in photoshop i added the grass and the sky. i'm not great in any of these programs, but i'm trying to get better. if anyone has any tips/suggestions i'd appreciated them.

      thanks!

    • Layout not exporting to PDF properly? (objects in front )

      hi!

i have a section of a building i did in sketchup.. it's a little messy but when you look at it in parallel projection/elevation everything lines up and i'm happy with it.

so i imported it into layout, and it still looks fine. and then i exported to PDF and now all the trees that were behind the model are suddenly in front of it?

      any suggestions?!

      hi!

i realize this is sort of a subjective subject, but could you mark maybe the top 20 'most used' or most useful plugins? i don't mean to demean anyone's efforts here, i'm sure they are all very good, but it would be a big help to me if i knew which ones are useful for almost everybody!

    • Licence & new versions of sketchup

      hi!

my work has a copy of sketchup pro on one of our machines, version 7.1 i think, single-user licence. does anyone know if i download a later version of sketchup, it'll cost more, or i'll have to update my licence, or do anything, really? i don't want to screw up this machine, but if i can be sure that i simply click 'update version' or whatever, it'll do it automatically and i won't have to re-configure anything

      thanks!

    • Creating clean site plans

      hi!

i've been looking at a several architectural competition entries and have noticed that a lot of them have these really clean 3-d site plans. i've attached some examples. are these done in sketchup? is there an easy way to get building elevation data for this? or is this more of a photoshop thing? i'm trying to figure out the best way to generate similar looking site plans, because just having snapshots from google earth doesn't look quite as nice.

      thanks!

figured it out! put the section cuts on a separate layer, turned them off and re-saved my scenes. the panes don't show up in layout anymore but the section cut is still there.

    • Removing the section pane in layout

      hi!

if i insert a model that has a section cut, the section pane is automatically applied which means i get a faint coloring over the whole thing. in sketchup i just click the "display section pane" button and it goes away, but i don't know how to do this in layout.

      any ideas?!

    • Opening giant sketchup file

      hi!

so i had a sketchup file that was about 175kb. i added a bunch of materials/components/etc and the filesize jumped to about 57mb. i can't even open it now.. i think it might be because i installed vray.. is there some way i can open this stupid file or reduce it's size in a 'sketchup lite' or 'sketchup safe' mode or something so that i can open it and get rid of the materials? would rather not uninstall vray if possible!

    • Stretch inserted content to cover entire document?

      hi!

if i make an a2 document (for example) and insert a sketchup model, is there an easy way to stretch this so it fills up the entire document, with no margins? i'm finding by manually dragging the insert it leaves a small margin on either side and can be kind of tricky/laborous to stretch it from corner to corner.

basically on some of my boards i would like to have a background image covering everything!

    • RE: Curve an irregular shape around another irregular shape

      hi!

i don't want the surfaces to be perpendicular! ideally i'd like the rectilinear shape to end up as a circle.

conversely, would it be possible to 'flatten out' the blobby circle on the right? can i somehow make a cut and then stretch it out so that it's more or less a line with little knobs in it? is there a 'rolling pin' button in sketchup hidden away somewhere?

    • RE: Curve an irregular shape around another irregular shape

      hi!

i will look into shape bender!

no, it doesn't have to conform to every little deviation, but it would be nice if it conformed to major ones. or if i could even wrap it around a perfect circle would help a lot!

    • Curve an irregular shape around another irregular shape

      hi!

what i would like to do is sort of draw an imaginary line down the middle of the rectangular shape on the left, and then somehow get that shape to curve alongside the shape on the right, so it's sort of molded around it. it doesn't have to be perfectly molded to the blob on the right, but it should roughly fit around it.

what is the best way to do this? i tried the follow me tool but i don't think it's what i want for this situation.

      thanks!
