    • Playing with Sunflow

Inspired by Ross's experiments with Sunflow, I decided to give it a try. This is the first render. Well, it's the fourth or fifth iteration. There is a point light and a directional light. GI was off and AA was set to High. Render time was 11:48. The numbers are from TTT (TIG's Text Tags).

      SF Cube.png.jpg

In case anyone is interested in what the illustration is, this was a quickie done last night to show someone how to do a cube with all corners and edges radiused. It was still open on the computer this morning when I got up so I thought I'd use it.

      Thanks to Didier and TIG

      And happy holidays to all.

    • RE: A Modern Bench

      Thank you Dylan.

I just drew the model as built. A back rest seems like a good idea although I'm not certain how it would work.

I thought about modelling a bit of sag to the seat but decided not to complicate the model further. I hadn't noticed that it does look a bit sagged but that is certainly due to the texture.

Here it is after a short MLT render in KT.

    • A Modern Bench

I banged this out this morning. Thought I'd share. It's based upon the bench by Mark Edmundson that was featured in the same issue of Fine Woodworking that included some of my SketchUp drawings. The original has woven Danish cord seat. I'd like to find a better texture for that but if you don't look too closely, what I used seems to work alright.

    • RE: Adirondack Chair

Ross, we're in the same conditions as you are except we haven't got a greenhouse or grapefruit trees.

My brother bought some Adirondack chairs made out of the plastic-wood decking--Trex or whatever--they are nice because they don't need to be refinished and they are heavy enough so they won't blow away.

I know what you mean about them adding a nice touch to the mood of a model.

Best of the holidays to you.

      Thank you Jerry.

Funny. I just made a marking gauge last Sunday for my brother. I didn't know it was a French one. He'll be even more impressed. πŸ˜†

      Glad you like it.

Anssi, I don't think the wood for the clamp needs to be anything too special. I seen them made of boxwood and maple; two woods on opposite ends of the hardness scale. The springy part of the lower jaw doesn't actually have to move too far.

      You're welcome, gentlemen.

Ross, you need a few of these to sit in after you've mowed the lawn and while you're waiting for your lobsters to boil. I suppose the lawn doesn't get much attention this time of year though, does it?

      Cheers,

Yes, TIG's script works with Architect Bold. I did this for him as the first thing I did with his script.

Another of my fat models. You could build real ones from this model if you wanted to, though.

    • Loading Error Question

A friend of mine says he's getting the following error messages when he starts SU.

      Error Loading File animation.rb
undefined method GetString' for nil:NilClass Error Loading File attributes.rb undefined method GetString' for nil:NilClass
      Error Loading File box.rb
      undefined method `GetString' for nil:NilClass

What's it mean and what's the fix? I'll appreciate any help all y'all might be able to give.

    • RE: Ruby Possibility?

Thanks Ron, I've used both of those scripts and they are handy. The original problem lead me to wondering if a script that has wider application might be possible. I'm guessing from the lack of response from the gurus that it isn't.

      Cheers,

    • Ruby Possibility?

A friend contacted me looking for some help. He has drawn a 30" wide kitchen base cabinet--all parts as separate components--and from this one, he would like to generate the standard cabinet widths from 12" to 40". The standard way to do this would be to make a copy of the cabinet, make each of the front and back components unique and then resize them accordingly.

Would there be a way to automate this with a Ruby script?

One thought I had that might be useful in more situations is a sort of macro recorder/player. Suppose you activate the recorder (A bit like getting a component definition with the applyTo script) and do the things you need to do to a component, i.e. Make unique, open for editing, resize, close component. Then, select another component or components and "play" the just recorded steps.

      Would this be possible?

      Good work Jerry.

I've got one I was going to post. In the interest of making future seraches easier, I'll put it here. This is a Hirukan-style pull. I simplified it some to keep the file size down.

    • RE: Fisheye?

      @unknownuser said:

I think a fisheye view would be quite cool in contrast to being able to just change the field of view.

In photographic terms, "fisheye" refers to a field of view of 180Β° along the long axis of the image. Most fisheye lenses yield the circular image because they are creating the 180Β° in all directions. Nikon and a few others had if not still have fisheye lenses for 35mm cameras that covered the entire 24x36 mm frame but they only gave the 180Β° field of view across the 36mm dimension of the frame.

My 17mm fisheye gives the circular image.

I have to ask. What's to dislike about changing the field of view?
