In real life, the skirt board is usually wider than the base by necessity. If you have trouble visualizing it, why not google some images of stair skirting?

You can export DXF from Illustrator and import into Sketchup either with Pro or one of the plugins. Here's one plugin Dxf In: http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=31186

So you don't need (in fact, probably cannot even) pay the $95 fee if you're just buying Pro for the first time.

I don't think this is right. If you check the FAQs it states that the maintenance fee cannot be separated from the software purchase. The $95 is part of the total cost of the program for a new Pro purchaser. That's why the cost is now $500-something and not $400-something like it was for Pro 8. If you check the fine print when purchasing a new Pro license, I recall seeing it explained there. For that $95 a new Pro user will get updates/upgrades for a year, just like a person renewing their license.

Right, a new buyer can't pay the $95 as an upgrade because its already included. I could have worded that better I suppose.

...does this mean if I choose not to pay the $95, I won't be able to upgrade sketchup if they come out with a small patch between the 2013 and 2014 release?

When you buy Pro, you're covered for a year of updates. The $95 is an upgrade fee only for people that already have Pro.

So you don't need (in fact, probably cannot even) pay the $95 fee if you're just buying Pro for the first time.

Have you uploaded the STL to cloud.netfabb.com? Link also in my first post.

If that doesn't work, can you upload the troublesome part here or PM it to me? So far I've not had a model that wouldn't work.

Can you explain a little more? Do you have stray geometry outside of the solid groups? The plugin will export whatever is selected, so if you pre-select just the solid(s) before running the STL plugin, just those will be exported.

If you need to get rid of stray geometry, Thom's Cleanup plugin will do that.

    • RE: Preparing object with internal void for 3d printing on SU

Can you tell us how you're printing?

It really depends on the machine you're printing with. Like Eli says, if its a print service like Shapeways, you need a hole connecting the void with the outside. However if you're using a desktop printer, you may not need the connecting hole.
