Have you tried the color by layer option?

The "ifcplugin" isn't the right folder (for both 2016 and 2017). You have to install the rbz (ruby zip) file (and don't need to search for the right folders, which have changed from 2016 to 2017) via the preferences (2016) or the new Extension Manager (2017).
mkdir (make directory) error sounds like missing write permissions for that folder?
I'm wondering where you will get the needed info for the high dynamic range from a single JPG...

Extensions are now installed with the Extension Manager (window menu).

If you modeled the component as a solid, you can combine them with one click with the solid tools...

I would start with a much smaller part and use a repeated copy of a component here...
It's called vertex tools, so it works with vertices. You can edit a group (you don't need to explode it!) and use the Vertextools there...
