How about voice commands? It's the way of the future IMHO.

have you any experience with this? I wonder how effective it is compared to key commands.

Not directly, only thru sf movies πŸ˜„.
But imagine not having to remove your attention from the model as you "Pushpull, 200mm, go"
Or, "linetool, red axis, 600, go." Or even, "Rectangle, 30 metres, green axis, 10 metres, push pull, 6 metres, blue axis, make component, copy by 5 , red axis, 20 metres, go." "Undo last." πŸ˜„
The mouse would still be selecting the area of focus. Gotta be quicker and less stressfull.
Possibly you could then use a 'SpaceNavigator' more effectively, tho no experience there.

I am not that joe wood; don't want the wrong guy to take the heat. I do custom work and I have built "things" just to see where it may go. But that's me; I don't expect anyone to be me. sorry for the advise.
      ....joe

Sorry wrong joe, but what heat? I was just explaining where I am in my practice, and trying to show how SU can save a whole lot of wasted work by not having to make it really. I am not anymore a 'pure' artist who is driven to produce for myself, I get my buzz working with clients.

The concept did get up however, in a small way...

BTW, this below was a 'Just have to make it' from years ago. Probly the best piece I ever, or will make.
Exhibited several times, offered for sale many times, got lost in a move, hopefully stolen rather than lost...
Into this world. Carved and constructed Huon Pine. 600mm high.

      Try this:
Go back to the original file, choose the view you want, click the 'Zoom' button and make a note of the focal length in the measurements box.
Open your new file, click zoom and enter the number you noted. That will get your zoom value, you might have to orbit a bit to get a similar angel πŸ˜„

    • RE: [Plugin] slavne: FitParts cut list generator

Trial version seems to work quite well, if a bit clunky and inconsistent.
I was getting the 'serious errors in selection' warning for no apparent reason, and the 'validate selection' option is for the paid version only.
I found I couldn't change the type size of the dimensions which meant at certain zooms the part number obscured the measurement. The layout of the measurements on the parts is not nice either.
No option to export the report that I could see, though cut and paste to Xcel worked ok.
I liked the options to use a custom board size and set the kerf.
The fitpart layers are all on top of each other so you have to first group the meas and parts, and then move them so as to see the full job.

So with all that EUR 55 (Au$80, US$60) is way too much I think, compared to other paid extensions.
With some improvement and a price of about US$20, I might reconsider.

As you said, he likes drawing.
Get him a Wacom tablet to start off with, the UI will give him an intro to simple computer graphics, and he will still enjoy the hand-eye coordination.
I'm pretty sure all the best illustrators use them and the smaller tablets are quite inexpensive.

I was struggling with the diffuser on the flash when SU crashed and of course I hadn't saved so I lost all the material presets, can't be fagged doing it again so this pre-save is as far as I got...

Rendered with TwilightV2 (09 Interior, about an hour)

Sometimes, you just have to build it.

      .... joe

Speculative building of anything, especially sculpture, can be a slippery road to insolvency...been there... sold off too many things at cost or less as they got more and more tired-looking from being carted around or stored for a couple of years.
My current (and evolved) practice is to work collaboratively with clients to resolve their particular needs, whether sculptural and/or functional. So this current (SU) example is just putting it out there without spending two weeks and 500 bucks for a beautiful object which SWMBO will most definitely not allow to be stored in the bedroom 😞

Bet you don't build many decks on spec Joe.

But in any case, isn't that the whole point of SU? To make it real before you have to make it really.

A piece I would love to make if I could find a client.
Plugins: TaperMaker and Fredo's Radial bend. Rendered with Twilight.
Actual construction would be free forming wood strip laminates around temporary armatures.

      900x443px. Proposed dimensions: 6x2x2 meters
