    • A few thoughts about the future of this planet

I turned 65 today and after a lifetime of trying to explain why we cannot continue to live like we do, I cannot understand why we don't see it.

The planet, by any scientific or empirical measure, is damaged now. Accept that.

This planet will be uninhabitable in 50 to 100 years by conservative estimates.
And perhaps less taking account of the 'tipping points', some say 20.

      By uninhabitable I mean...

Europe freezing because of the ocean currents.
      Equatorial becoming arid.
3 to 5 metre sea rise.
      Massive climate migration overwhelming others.
Mass extinction OF Flora, Fauna and Humans.

Your children's children's will have a bleak future.

Your Great-grand Children will be hard pressed to stay alive, The planets' future is fucked.

At my birthday dinner tonight we talked about this...
...consensus was nothing will change, cos people wont.

    • Timber Bridge

I have passed this bridge many times and always thought it would make a great SU model.
This is a bit of a hobby project and a work in progress, so it will be slow.
I am aiming for a completely realistic look from any view.
This also includes my first attempts with Skatter.

      C and C's welcome.

      @philw said:

Using the tape tool and picking 2 point and typing in the "Measurements box" a new number brings up the dialog box asking me do I want to re-scale.

Works great in 2016, but the same method will not work at all in 2017, has something changed?

      Windows 7
      Sketchup 2017 Pro

Nothings changed that I can see, works fine for me. Perhaps a 'Repair' is in order.

Barry, where do you want the utility windows to be displayed?

Short answer... anywhere I want, with infinite sizeability and a lot of flexibility.

I know you will say all doable with new trays, but they are a pain to organize.

I spent 10 years with the old system. Did they ask us if we wanted a new one? Certainly didn't ask me.

Ok, I give in, I have just spent half an hour making a tray for each dialogue which is as close as I can get to the old GUI. I will see how I get on...
      ..OK, I already hate it...

Try right clicking the selection and make sure 'Make Bounded' is active. Box will then expand/contract with text size.

Thanks for the breakdown, very generous, I am still struggling with quads and having a model like this to study is just the ticket.

But steal a loaf of bread or rustle a sheep or two and you'll be out here in no time.

Haven't been to Bendigo for yonks, might have to detour there on my next trip north.

Not necessarily. It is quite possible that the voice recognition software can work with voice macros. You say orbit and the short cut is executed.

Voice activated software has come a long way in the last few years and can actually work with the powerful hardware that we now have.

I will check it out, thanks.

Normal windows built in voice recognition software works easily with SU, I used it years ago but gave up on it when working with others in a too noisy environment.

Not the same as a dedicated SU interface. As I understand 3rd party speech recog... EG; to open a group for editing... I would have to say 'double click'. To orbit I would have to speak the assigned shortcut instead of just saying 'orbit'.

How about voice commands? It's the way of the future IMHO.

can you imagine how annoying an office full of people voicing sketchup commands would be?

I think I will stick with just voicing the occasional expletive and keeping the other commands silent. 😎

Well, there is that, but I work alone and I talk to myself anyway 😞

    • New iPad App Makes 3-D Scans

Interesting, hopefully they will make an Android version.

      Link to Wired article here:

Just noticed they want $29 per room to convert the scan to DXF. Too much I reckon.
