had a very quick bash at it in artlantis... its quite a good program though i think the overall quality podium can produce is better

hi the model looks really good have u thought about rendering it?
also have u had any thoughts on what materials u would use or how the internal layout would work?
didnt think this would really go in the gallery section but feel free to move it
i dont normally enjoy making models but this time i modelled it all in SU before i made the model and found that it managed to save me a lot of time, inevitably there were changes but it has realy helped me and allowed me to generate my drawings from the model too.
The model itself was for a uni project based on a 'utopian' prototype for a future city, i wanted to integrate environments to produce a more 3 dimensional expansion of the city using arcologies
comments welcome especially if you know how to get a good elevation photo as my photographic skill are pretty poor

awesome ive never seen a 3d pdf is that something u can export from SU or do u need a plugin the design is also very cool
nice one!
Im in my final year of my architecture degree and was introduced to sketchup in my frist year, where it was great everyone was using it-
now that im producing work for my final year projects less and less people are using it and i do find a degree of snobbery. My arguement to them is the fact that i can perhaps model in sketchup a hell of a lot quicker than they could in say rhino. I also say that it depends on whatever works for them but i see no need to work hard/spend time on other programs when i can just use SU
haha yeah i wasnt too sure what to call it... technically its not a plan- its an elevation taken from a plan view, so my logic was plan elevationi hate saying 'top-down view' sounds lame
yeah i think im gonna dull down the town even more although the test print off looked quite clear.
Is supposed to be a cliff and how a city can infiltrate it to form a community- i admit its not great but it does the job
Hi apologies about the late reply i have been bogged down with work-
Here are some more clear renders of the model
The elevations although they seem small- come out quite well on an A1 sheet but i did dull down the butchered paper effect and heres the result

Hi, I'm at Nottingham Uni in the UK studying architecture and have a lot of SU work that i have used on projects (both conceptual images and architectural) if that is of any use
Low polygon count.... basically a simple model-
if u have a cupboard a low poly version wouldnt show a lot of detail, just the basics, in addition to this there wouldnt be a lot of faces in curved elements (which would add to the poly count)
a high poly cupboard may shoow hinges/ mechanism in detail and would ultimately have a larger file size
wow thanks a lot for the input guys its all much appreciated and now sorted, ive pretty much finished the modelling now so i can start texturing up.
The unit SU model was mainly for concept art cnc3 is good but i realise it couldnt handle the copmplexity of the model, they have created complex looking units by clever texturing which is what i had hoped to use here-
taking the overall textures of the unit and creating a much simpler series of blocks to give the effect that the untextured SU model has
again thanks a lot for your speedy responses and help!
im designing a new unit for command and conquer 3 (completely fictional but its a time killer) and i cant get my head around the drape too (if thats the right one to use) ive attached the model i want to put the logo onto the barrel can anyone help me?
also can anyone think of a cool name for it
???

kerkythea is free as far as i am aware, if you are a student you can get a copy of artlantis, and i think podium is also quite cheap for what you get... hopefully you have photoshop which is another useful piece of software that can make your renders a lot more realistic
thanks for the feedback guys, i have strated going through some of the 3dsmax tutorial and it is a bit more tricky than i had anticipated.... i mainly just want to learn the rendering side- im not hoping to go into visualisation but im not completely satisfied witth the quality of work at the moment using artlantis unless anyone knows of any good tutorials out there?
thanks for the advise, ive managed to procure a copy of max and will hopefully have something to post up in the coming months
Hi, up until now i have been using artlantis for rendering my sketchup models, prior to that i was using podium but found it to be a bit tricky when you wanted to change the projection of textures...
Artlantis is great its very quick and easy to use but i have found it quite hard to do exteriors convincingly.
I have gone through both the artlantis and kerky examples both on this forum and on the associated website and it seems clear that the results with kerky look better- i have gone through the tutorial and it is a lot different to the way artlantis works but i was wondering if it was worthwhile learning it over artlantis- or if time would be better spent on 3dsmax or another rendering app?
cheers

in terms of buiolding it depends on the accuracy i want, i quite like to draw plans in autocad and then import and extrude, this (for me) saves a lot of time when typing dims etc. into the prompt
if u re-apply the texture to a single face the option should appear, stange eh?
ummm im not sure if i get what u mean but this is what i interpret your question as:
you can edit the shortcuts to work for you, for instance i use....
to hide = ctrl + h
to unhide last = alt + h
to unhide all = ctrl + alt + h
this i find is a good basis for hiding/unhiding easily but its all down to personal preference
(keyboard shortcuts can be editted in
Windows>preference>shortcuts
