    • RE: Starry starry night with tilt up.

the problem i have with this is that all the elements look too superimposd but not in a stylised good way

if this is a rendering straight from SU (the building i mean) increase the dark on the shadows, the contrast doesnt balance with the background

Change the tree in the foreground (it looks very 2d) with a photomontage tree, this will carry the continuity with the other planting.

add shadows from the new planting onto the building, increase the transparency to show the building to effect

use some lighting on the building layer, especially on the left side where is doesnt quite marry up

add a shadow for the main building onto the road

if u keep the reflection of the building consider warping/skewing it to match up with the direction of the road.

Maybe duplicate the vegetation near the building to the grass in the foreground.

sorry if any of it is over critical, i dont mean to be but if u are using photoshop and are wonding how to do an of the mentioned tasks id be happy to post up comments.

    • RE: How do people use SketchUp skies.

i dont really use the sky as i prefer to export and mess about with in photoshop, and i may be wrong but it seems like it slows SU down, either that or it speeds up when u turn it off... nevertheless its definately a good feature and i have seen it used effectively in a lot of the posts in the gallery

    • RE: Some work

this work is great i do find that the image with the edges showing works slightly better than the one without (any chance of seeing the one without with edges on?)
also with the tree placement in the first image, maybe consider flipping or rotating so the overall effect isnt so uniform right the way accross, i find that duplication of that kind of tree doesnt work as well when its the same.
how long did this all take to model?

    • RE: Renders from a uni project

Hi thanks for the comments much appreciated

I dont have anymore images in that style although i have some conceptual stuff that lead onto this somewhere that i used SU for so ill post that up.

Yeah i cant really do photorealistic because i dont fully understand artlantis yet, i keep meaning to learn a new program but am horribly set in my ways and dont have much time.

I also have a problem with the scale of people and fitting them into the pictures, normally just size them so it looks nice but this leads to inconsistancies scale-wise.

I agree that some of the pods came out a bit too see-through that was mainly to do with trying to do as little work as possible with the rendering, a lot of them have just been flipped/warped made more/less opaque to save time.

Im in my third year at uni, in terms of finding images i found a link somewhere on the old forum a while ago for free wallpapers, the URL is:
      http://interfacelift.com/

also i do google searches for 'extra large' images typing in key words but this can sometimes be time consuming and often inconclusive.

The interiors were all modelled and rendered (ill dig out some jpegs/the SU model) and the glass was messed about with in artlantis to produce the reflections, with the people added in photoshop

      thanks again for the comments

model looks great, the textures are very effective on what appears to be a relatively low poly model, any plans to render it?

    • Renders from a uni project

here are some renders form my last project

      modelled in SU
      Rendered in Artlantis
      Finished off in Photoshop

They are supposed to be different pods that can be integrated into the environment

      comments welcome as always

      http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=376&card2=175

Someone gave me this link in a similar post hopefully it can help, generally on baord GCs arent particularly great, i upgraded from my on board to an Nvidea 7900 and the difference is huge, on SU i can get a great anti aliasing (which can be handy when u want straight SU renders) also i can run two monitors at a high resolution with no problem

      hope this is of use

    • RE: Computer for SketchUp

wow a quad core, ive been considering upgrading but i read somewhere that SU cant make use of it well-
i did a very crude experiment with a complicated model (about 30 MB, shadows on etc..) on my core 2 duo...
by pushing ctrl+alt+del you can see the CPU usage chart and if you orbit the model you can see how the stress increases....
would it be possible for you to do the same to see how much SU actually maximises the quad core it would be very useful

    • 4od- just to make you aware

Ive been sing the 4od service and my bandwidth has been limited, heres why....

Sky on demand and BBC's I player also use this nasty Kontiki software. Please read for more info*

This is a heads up to anyone who has, or is planning to instal 4od. Channel 4's new on demand service. BBC's Iplayer is also now using this software.

Sky and channel 4 are using software from kontiki. Basically they are using your broadband connection to share their programs, setting up your computer to allow others to download files from you.

Technical bit: If you press ctrl alt del on your keyboard, a panel will come up showing Applications, process, performance and network (on windows xp, 98) In your process tab if you have installed 4od you will see 2 process's. kservice.exe and khost.exe. These are 2 process's the kontiki software used by 40d and sky on demand to share files.

The important bit is you have no control on how much bandwidth they use, slowing down your connection and maybe leading to a large broadband bill or your internet service provider warning you over download / upload use.

The software runs without your knowledge, although you agree to this in the terms and conditions. Your basically setting up your pc as a server for people to connect to helping 4od share files without paying large bills themselves.

If you remove the kontiki software you won;t be able to use 4od. Its your choice. Search on google on how to remove it, good guides there.

Just thought I would give people a heads up. As the software uses up valuable system reources slowing down your computer and internet surfing / downloading.

So if your wondering why files are taking so long to download end the two process's listed above and see the difference.

has anyone else had any good/bad experiences with 4od?

    • Ruby scripts

hi, ive been dodging getting into ruby scripts for quite a while and thought i would get into it.... in particular i found the make faces script which i thought would be useful- but i dont know how to get some of them to work (apart from the ones with a readme) is this an SU6 issue? or is it just a case of copying to plugins folder
apologies if this has been replicated
