Thank you for sharing this process and your phenomenal results! I am in awe at the beautiful model you have created. Bravo!

uh oh, I hope not. So far so good, fingers crossed.

RE: Ack, help! Windows 10 - SU menu freezing
Ugh, fine! So SU2018 does not play nice with the latest Windows 10 updates. I went ahead and installed SU2021 without a hitch.
Thank you Sketchucation for the toolbar so migrating my plugins was greatly eased!

RE: Ack, help! Windows 10 - SU menu freezing
No - that's not it. I got that a few weeks back too, and disabled it right away. Thanks though.
I wonder if there would be any difference between SU versions, if 2020 or 2021 would behave differently. If I get frustrated enough, I might try the newer version of SU.
I'm using a backup computer at the moment, so I may just wait a while and see if there's some Windows or driver update that fixes things back.

Ack, help! Windows 10 - SU menu freezing
I am not sure what happened from one day to the next, probably some windows 10 update, but My Sketchup (version 2018) freezes whenever I go to the main menus. For example, I try to click on the file menu and SU freezes and the CPU usage goes to 100% on that thread and SU hangs. I can click on tool buttons, it's just the top menu. Anyone run into this? I have not changed graphics drivers in nearly a month (I have the latest Nvidia Studio driver installed.) I've done all the simple things I could think of - repair the SU installation, uninstall Enscape in case it was that. Restarted many times. I'm stuck.

RE: Pic2Shape - Converting Images to 2D objects
True, it would be a nice feature if the plugin had a way to resize the image to an optimal size "behind the scenes" to use just for the tracing, while leaving the original intact.

RE: Pic2Shape - Converting Images to 2D objects
Glad to see this plugin get redeveloped, thanks Fredo6!

Downsizing 30-50 % realy works, all the trees i'm testing so far are working via this method.
Only downside is the quality of the tree , that's a petty.
Maybe it's an idea to make the time for generating a boundary a bit longer ?Couldn't you just re-link the original full res image after generating the contours? I would think one wouldn't want an outline that has too many segments, this being SketchUp and all.

Of all the new features the tag grouping is the only one I find useful. The PreDesign thingy is a toy. The logos still have to grow on me. I rooted for some substantial speeding up of the 3d engine.
same. One year. One new welcome feature. Oh joy. Innovating bigly.

RE: Warehouse closing ?
Thanks for explanation Dave R, I was wondering about that when I saw the note about the new limits.

RE: How will the switch to subscription affect you?
Answer to the topic question: it won't affect me, I already stopped upgrading and am holding on to my 2018 perpetual license for as long as I can.
I too am a bit concerned about the warehouse models not being available in older versions of SU as time goes on. I appreciate the Collada option, maybe that's all we need to make sure models continue to be backwards compatible.

End of the road for me,

I'll be spending my time over the next couple of months looking at other options for my personal use.
Yep, I was gonna come here and comment on this latest subscription racket. It's been 2 years since I last paid Trimble any money, and it doesn't look like I will give them any of my money in the future.

RE: Autocad/3Ds Max, Sketchup vs Blender 2.8
Congratulations for discovering Blender! /s
But seriously - the apps, like @box says, are apples to oranges. They all have their use cases and their drawbacks. For me, Blender was essential to be able to render animation and camera movement, which is (or was prior to Fredo6's add-ons) impossible to do at a reasonable level of control within SU. I still model all my architectural box modeling in SU because it's faster than any other app I've ever used. It all depends on what you need to accomplish.

RE: Anyone Upgrading to 2020?
Exciting Seems like SU is almost caught up to FormZ circa 2000 with the ability to hide objects. So glad I didn't renew my maintenance after 2017. Layers = Tags... I can't even.
Anyone want to guess which version of ACAD LT I'm still using?

RE: SketchUp 2010 -> 2019
x64 happened this decade, didn't it?
While on the one hand SU works better, the core program has not undergone any fundamental changes, so someone picking up SU2019 from having used SU8 would not find basically anything unfamiliar. Compare that to something like Blender - going from 2.7 to 2.8 and expecially things like Eevee. In some ways, I'm not sure it's good or bad, I still use Sketchup day in and day out to wrangle my polygons, and the many little things that are improved in the user experience from ten years ago do add up. Toolbar management, curves, better memory usage, I would not want to go back. I also haven't gone forward either...

RE: Load v-ray on demand?
My understanding is that the current version of the plugin doesn't activate until you use it, so the loader isn't needed any more.

RE: Is it just me?
Just seeing this post, since I am here much less frequently than I used to be.
I would say another factor is corporatization. Before the EW, extensions were a lot more freewheeling, plus the owners of SU weren't hiring plugin authors. For me, a lot of activity here used to be around the V-Ray plugin - but that has changed significantly with the way Chaos Group has reshuffled their development team and how they are developing the plugin. I agree with @medeek that many large companies are using Sketchup - but the proportion of hobbyists seems to have decreased, especially with the abandonment of Make.

RE: Can't figure this thing out
Ah - that would make the most sense - it has to do with how you open or close the switch and prevent arcing. The separate handle allows you to move your hand away from the switch, and the spring flicks the switch open once it gets a certain amount of tension on it.
-
RE: Can't figure this thing out
Does that platform move? Maybe the springs are there to keep the switch from falling open if it's tilted past vertical. Edit - maybe not, I don't see that it would serve that purpose.

RE: Sketchup 2019 and its knock-on effects
oops, thing I learned today is that editing the poll choices re-sets the poll Hoping this correction addressing my omission of the classic licensing scheme captures most people's situation.

SU 2019 Pro, classic. Not going subscription route.
Ah, I wasn't even paying attention! I forgot they split the options into full license and subscription. Makes sense to buy the 2019 Pro and stop there if you already paid up the Maintenance subscription. I had held off and let the maintenance lapse, so I ended at SU2018.
That's exactly it - it's felt like the "influencers" who contributed plugins, pro tips, and a dynamism to the Sketchup community are mostly either scooped up into the Trimble corporate maw, or else have moved on to other software.
