Good idea to put it into a webdialog. Actually, Jim, you could add a list of objects/methods to your webconsole and make those clickable so that they automatically get inserted into the editor.

FYI: I updated the cheatsheet for the new (7.1) functions.

      Cheers,
      Alex

    • RE: Google Building Maker?

There is actually a great use for this for entities that want to model entire cities. Their work gets a little easier now because they "just" need to take/buy oblique imagery, submit it to Google and then can use this tool. Apparently this is what they used to do cities like Vancouver (recently released on GEarth).

One drawback is still the quality for "showcase buildings" - and that's where SketchUp is still needed.

      Alex

    • RE: Collada, O3d, web pages

Great approach, Al. I wanted to have a way to put SketchUp files on the web easier than resorting to VRML.

Have you looked at Flash, too. I would be interested in an easy way to do that. Apparently there is a way but it's cumbersome.

    • Plugin template

I wanted to add a sample plugin template to my cheatsheet. My first attempt is attached as a pdf file. Please look it over and suggest improvements.

I would like to keep it simple yet include "standardization" efforts that some of you have started. Ultimately this could also be useful for a plugin repository later.

      Cheers,
      Alex

I made another version of the same sheet. This one is more condensed and prints on three pages.

I think it would be a great addition to a cheat sheet to have a sample mini-plugin added as well. Is there already an accepted "framework" out there?

Duh! I should have read this over before posting. Thanks, RunnerPack for the tip. The duplicates are now removed and everything fits nicely on 5 pages.

I'll make another version soon that is even more condensed. I like this layout, though, because I can add something to each line.

what program(s)/techniques were used to make this?

I like using PSPad for coding. I used its "find in files" to iterate over Jim's download and then used a simple RegEx find and replace to extract the lines. The final document is a four-column word layout.

    • SU Ruby Cheat-sheet

I like working with cheat-sheets. Although the online API docs (and Jim's offline docs) are great, I wanted something printable and concise, too. So here it is. Hope it helps others, too.

    • RE: [Request] APT ruby plugin "subscription" manager 4 SU needed

I think this is not too hard to implement as long as common standards are maintained. But I would prefer a central database - the plugins can be hosted somewhere else.

That way the update checker that would run when su starts only needs to check one database. Checking with individual publishers would compromise startup times.

I am all for this, too. Another example for a similar implementation is the wordpress plugin system. Ultimately this would best be hosted by google, though.

I just added this idea to the current SU feature request website voting thingy. Head over there and vote for it.

    • RE: [Info] Ambient Occlusion -> Simple Rays

qpic, this is an excellent plugin. Keep working at it. I am looking forward to the finished version.

I like the idea of merging both the occlusion and the original textures. Maybe it is possible to do that on a pixel-by-pixel basis for each texture. I don't know about standard ruby methods for this, but it may be as trivial as subtracting brightness values.

I also think that what you mention would be great functionality. But I don't know how to unload a plugin or function. If anyone knows how to do that, then please let me know. Using checkboxes for loading should be easy.

Yes, thanks for the post. It made me look into this sort of work again. Perhaps you are aware that there is an energy analysis free plug-in for SU (among other related options): http://www.iesve.com/Software/Model-Building/SketchUp-plug-in

Yep, you are right, this can be done without Revit. Another option is to import a 3D model into Ecotect directly. I just wanted to show how one can re-use a SketchUp model in Revit for such a thing.

I imagine in these times of drastic unemployment in the architectural / engineering sectors this could be an employment possibility. Actually seeing were the energy leaks are, adds a new perspective in the awareness department! And seeing this via SketchUp interactive interface

Yes, now is a good time to strengthen "green capabilities"...

I wonder is there much capital involved in setting up equipment / training wise?

I am not 100% sure on the cost of the IR (FLIR) camera that I used but I believe it is around $12,000. Not cheap equipment, I know. I believe these cameras can be rented, too, but I don't know where.

    • Some energy-related ideas for SketchUp

Just wanted to show some of my recent SketchUp work:

      Our_House_1.jpg

Turns out SketchUp is not only great for realistic texturing. If you have a thermography camera (and you are doing building performance analysis), then you can also use it to present its images in 3D. The link below elaborates on this in a paper, video and a VRML version:
      http://www.alexschreyer.net/projects/interactive-3d-visualization-of-building-envelope-systems-using-infrared-thermography-and-sketchup/

If you have SketchUp and Revit 2010, then you can do nice solar studies with the new free mini-Ecotect plugin.

    • RE: Where is the center of gravity?

      Hi All,

Sketchyphysics and centerpoint work well for convex or cubic volumes, respectively. For example, centerpoint will use the center of the bounding box. Both approaches will not give you the true centroid in your case, which you need to figure out the center of gravity (assuming you have a homogenous material). You can only do that with my plugin but only for 2d shapes.

If you need a better evaluation of the volume centroid, then look at a software like Rhino.

      Cheers, Alex

    • RE: Where is the center of gravity?

Another approach: You can get the main cross-sections using the slicer plugin and then find the centroids of those faces using my centroid plugin (search index for both). That will give you an approximation until someone writes some volume centroid code.
