Azimuth is the counter-clockwise angle measured from the +X axis.

Exactly, though I guess I should have been more clear on altitude; I mean in the sense of aligning an alt/az mount, so it would actually be pitch.

I'll dig through that script and see if I can think clearly enough this morning to change that part over. Thanks for a heck of a good starting point, though; I was expecting it to take a lot more code than that just to get the azimuth right.

I can't find a "Save Draft" button in LO. Where is it and what's wrong with it?

I meant the obnoxious one on this forum that's positioned and highlighted to be the most intuitive thing to click when trying to post.

Sorry; wouldn't want to give the LO UI guys an idea for something else they shouldn't, but probably would, implement.

    • Altitude/Azimuth of a face normal?

Looking for a way to find the altitude/azimuth for the yellow face in each circumstance, obviously relative to the root coordinate system and not the component's, since that would be constant throughout.

Knowing the angle of the cut in the post, and the rotation angle, I'm certain there is a way to calculate this as well, but I don't recall how to do that either. (Pretty sure this wasn't covered in any of the math classes I've had.)

Either method (measuring in SU or calculating from the known values) would help. Trial and error with the physical object can be tricky.

I'll look at the files when I get home from work but one thing you should know is that it is generally a bad thing to have viewports show modified in the scenes list. Having them modified disconnects then from the scenes in SketchUp. They get modified if you double click on a viewport and open it for editing. Typically people do this to make adjustments to the view, i.e. zoom in a bit, orbit or pan the camera.

Is there a way to get LO to zoom more sensibly, then? If I use a standard view and have the entire model visible in SU, when it gets into LO, it's always too large for the viewport. Finding a happy medium without zooming out in LO would take forever in trial-and-error zoom-save-and-update iterations. I realize that the differing aspect ratios of the SU window and a US-letter sheet mean it can't translate exactly, but even a model that would fit nicely often ends up extending out of the LO viewport both horizontally and vertically, which can't be blamed on aspect ratio differences.

ETA: I still think the person responsible for that "save draft" button needs lynching.

I think this came about because there were so many LayOut critical scenes in the SU file that if I created a new layer I would have to Update all the scenes with that new layer off. That's my excuse anyway!

This. Not sure why they won't give an option to have new layers default to off in all scenes, since 99 times out of 100, I'm creating the layer specifically so I can have something show in only one scene. Would be a lot easier to turn it on in that scene than go through all the others turning it off.

And while we're on dumb behaviors, who had the drug addled idea that "save draft" should be the leftmost and most visible button?

    • RE: SU Pro 2016 - Hang on create material

OK, found the problem; apparently the create material dialog was coming up way off screen. Still calling it a bug, since the trays migrate back to the main screen any time I turn my second monitor off, so why wouldn't a dialog do the same?

    • SU Pro 2016 - Hang on create material

Total hang - no "not responding" but nothing works. No CPU use, memory use normal, but the only way to do anything to that instance to end task it. Can alt-tab to it and select it from the bar normally, but nothing in the instance works. Cursor is still an arrow, but clicking/dragging/mousewheel anywhere in the main SU window or open trays, including close boxes, does nothing.

It's almost like there's a modal dialog hidden somewhere, except that the main SU window is showing active, and of course I can't minimize any part of that SU instance, nor does any extra window show up with alt-tab. Other instances act perfectly normal as long as I don't try to create a new material.

Can reproduce with a dead empty model in a new instance, so it's not just a model issue.

      Win 10 Home, 8G RAM, SU 16.0.19912 64 bit.

    • Archelios/Trace Software

Anybody using ArcheliosPro or ArcheliosSuite? I've been trying for a few days to get either a login for the site or some answers from Trace Software about its features, but haven't heard anything back after at least 72 hours. Not even an email acknowledgment of the message I sent using their contact form. Yes, I've checked my spam folder, and searched my email for every relevant keyword I could think of to make sure I'm not just missing it.

Anybody got a known valid email address for somebody there? If it's a problem between them and gmail, I'm sure they'd like to get it worked out.

      @nankyo said:

It is really nice one.. but I have suggestion...and because I have no idea of scripting I will just say it.. hope someone will deal with that πŸ˜„... So I would like to take all that analysis and put it all in the same view.. means that or is it possible for example to draw and create faces in the shape of the shadow or... to generate some kind of "burn" on a surface (ground) so it will be possiable to see all the transition in one shot.

I'll second that; what I need is a way to show all the area that is shaded between 0900-1600 all year. Something like Skelion's "sunny area" but able to run at least enough iterations throughout the year to give a pretty accurate "no go" area for solar installation. I don't care about 95% solar access, or 50%, just 100% throughout those 7 hours each day or not.

    • RE: [Plugin] Skelion (solar, shadows)

A corollary to the "no shade 0900-1600 year 'round" would be that I generally end up tracing that out by hand. The ability to do "sunny area" for a user defined list of dates/times throughout the year would be very helpful and well worth the purchase price for me. The list I would most likely use would be 26 iterations, but it generally ends up running only for a chimney (i.e. a simple box) or two casting shadows on a single plane, so even running 30 iterations of the current script takes less than 5 minutes for me.

    • RE: [Plugin] Skelion (solar, shadows)

OK, testing with the free version again.

Still having the problem of it hanging when I have it insert modules more than once in a model. (We often have multiple revisions and/or add a surface, fill it, then draw out another surface if needed for the desired size, so inserting multiple times is a necessity for me.
We use a railless racking system that allows pretty much any mix of orientations. Often this means we'll have a combination of portrait and landscape rows to best fill the available space. It would be great to have something that can effectively tessellate the available space as efficiently as possible using both orientations and accounting for a minimum amount of solar access for each module. (i.e. generally no shade at all between 0900-1600 year round, though this changes for some arrays)
Get rid of that damn monolog box that I have to acknowledge at every startup until I install the latest version. It's not going to be my priority when I'm swamped with design jobs and is pretty much the reason I've uninstalled Skelion twice instead of buying the Pro version. I'm not inclined to pay for childish "PAY ATTENTION TO ME!" tactics over a non-critical update. Use something like that if it's about to format my backup drive, not because I might be missing out on a spelling correction somewhere.

    • RE: SketchUp 2016 Wishlist

Better snapping, even on small stuff.

For example, I draw a section of 2x8" rectangular tubing with 1/16 wall thickness. (At the origin, totally orthogonal to the axes, so not even any odd angles to deal with yet.) I then try to grab a corner of that while zoomed in enough to clearly see the face of the cross section; it seems to be random whether it grabs the inside or outside corner, even when I can clearly see it's snapping to the corner not closest to the actual cursor location. I usually end up having to zoom in until I can't even fit the entire end of the tube on my screen to get it to snap to the outside corner so I can properly place the tube, then having to zoom out again to find where I needed to place it several feet away. Why it would choose the inside corner when the cursor is even right on the outside corner is beyond me.

    • RE: SketchUp 2016 Wishlist

How about not assuming all users are brain damaged? The "By adding a location..." monologue is annoying enough once, but popping it up every time is wasting time and effectively telling the user you don't think they're bright enough to remember what this option did the last thousand times.

Or be consistent and have every tool pop up a similar window:

      • Pencil: By drawing a line...
      • Eraser: By erasing objects...
      • Paint bucket: By adding materials...
      • Etc.

Would help if either of them had the guts to say something. All I've found from Trimble is "we're looking into it, keep watching for an update" about 3 hours ago. First report on the product forum is about 7-8 hours old.
