      One possibility,
Sketchup uses internet explorer to access the warehouse, try clearing the cache of IE even if you don't normally use it. It's also recommended that you update it.

Thanks. That does seem to have gotten it usable. Still a bit buggy, (will load some of the front page, then stall, but will still allow me to search and get the results reasonably quickly) but at least it comes up every time now.

Yes, it was 16GB, rather than 16MB. "I remember when 1MB RAM was $40."

Back in the day when a GUI and a WYSIWYG word processor could run like a champ on a machine with 4M RAM, and both could install from about a dozen 1.44M floppies?

It's downright vile how many apps now take 1000x as much in the way of resources to do the same task with only a few useful new features.

    • Warehouse weirdness

I can go to https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/ in a browser and cruise around all I want, but when I try to use File>3D Warehouse>Get Models through Sketchup Pro 2014, it stalls; it may load as much as half of the initial page, but then, even after 15 minutes of sitting, it still hasn't finished and won't search. Right now, it's sitting at a completely blank browser window with a busy cursor after about 5 minutes.

Is there something different about the way Sketchup is accessing the Warehouse? Anybody got a fix for this?

Working here too. What does it do when the export fails to complete? Taking forever, or crashing? Have you tried exporting something really simple (like a couple of cubes with solid color faces) to see if that works?

is it normal for this to take an extended amount of time to execute? I have been watching it process on a 30mb file for about 20 minutes. I check the activity monitor and SU is still performing and using resources so I know it's doing SOMETHING...let me know. thanks!

      Did it finish yet?

He's pleased with the way SU is today, and just want it to stay that way - Except fixing bugs, expanding the API, adding minor things etc, nothing related to its core.

I'm all for fixing bugs, but that's what minor releases are for. Major releases should have major core improvements.

      so miserable... πŸ˜•

I'd really like to hear his description of the last time WordStar added a really breathtaking feature, or the last time WordPerfect led the way with a new concept to revolutionize word processing.

Look what happened to Altavista when they stopped leading the way with new innovations.

It's not good enough to sit back and say "the rest of the pack is pretty slow right now, so we're just going to take a nap until they catch up." When they catch up, they will pass, and like Altavista or WordPerfect, you may never catch up again.

      REALLY?!? This is 2014?!?

Well, it does appear they've finally recognized that I don't need to see that stupid "by adding a location..." monologue every time I use geolocation. Sadly, that seems to be the best benefit I've found so far.

      @unknownuser said:

If that is what you are doing......try selecting the trim tool before selecting any entities.....click 1st on "the box" and second on the first sheet(it will trim)....the "box"(first selection) will remain selected so just click on second sheeet(it will also trim)....click on third sheet.....and so on.
Should be aproximately a 50% time saver. πŸ˜„

More than 50% for now, since I rearranged my toolbars with the 2014 update, so all the less-used functions (less used than the pencil and eraser, at least) now have a built in "oops, it's over there now" delay.

Latest update seems to be working.

This should save a lot of time when I'm having to shuffle stuff around and hide/unhide a lot to clarify something for the fabrication crews.

Alas, I too have found this plugin freezes in Sketchup 2013. I tried closing all dialogs, particularly the outliner, scenes and layers, and no luck. Pity.

No freeze here, just doesn't appear to do anything at all. Won't even unhide elements within the currently open component, even after view>hidden and Ctrl-A.

Will fiddle with it a bit more when I have time.

    • RE: Component bounding box size

Hit these a few times where it turned out that some subcomponent deep inside the main component had its origin set way outside its actual bounds. Made it near impossible to find since there wasn't any actual geometry out there to see or select, and the subcomponent was a small one that would be easy to overlook.

    • Copy with even spacing/max spacing?

Thought 1001 Tools would do this, but it just seems to put everything at the specified spacing and make up any difference in the middle.

What I'm looking to do is mainly purlin/girt spacing, where I specify the start and end points and max spacing. For example, purlins evenly spaced over an area, with a maximum spacing of 5'. Obviously a little math, place the start, move it to the end and /whatever-my-math-showed will do the job, but I'd really prefer a plugin that will let me use my own component placed at the start and end locations, (we use several different profiles of steel in similar applications) and will simply copy it however many times it takes to get a <5' (or whatever it is in that situation) even spacing.

Ideally it would also account for the width of the purlin/girt/whatever, (i.e. checking for max spacing using inside-inside measurement) but they generally max out at 2.5", so center to center spacing is rarely going to be a problem. The one-in-24 or one-in-30 situation where it would save one $30-$50 purlin on a $3k or more structure to measure inside-inside is really not going to bother anybody.

I'd be interested to know – from all who like geomodelling – whether they would like to continue geo modelling, if an alternative to Google Earth existed (…or exists).

Just do it all in one model so there won't be so many piecemeal loading issues. Start with a sphere with radius 6,371,000m, mash in the top and bottom a bit...

When I think of the strength of a shovel handle vs. the strength of a bike frame (thanks for the example), I think the shovel handle would win hands down. It will be heavy, though, and that will be an issue if you do much riding.

If anybody's still playing with the idea, I'd suggest solid bois d'arc. It makes ash look like balsa by comparison, though you need it completely cured out first, and it will blunt any tools used on it. (I used to turn it on a lathe with HSS tooling, and it was a constant two-passes-and-touch-up-the-edge process.) Once properly cured and finished, it's incredibly resilient, and as it ages, it tends to get even prettier.

I watched a friend ruin a decent axe trying to cut a 4" limb, and I've bounced a 10lb maul off a log 8-9 times before making anything that could be considered the start of a split.

    • RE: Length Snapping quick buttons...

Configurable "hotkeys" (real or onscreen buttons) for commonly used lengths would be handy. For example, I use 984, 1968 and 1015.4mm lengths repeatedly in pretty much every model, even though all the other measurements are in inches and feet. (Due to the size of the items I'm designing around, and the fact that all the other materials come in feet and the assembly crews rarely have metric tape measures.) It would make things a lot quicker if I could assign those measurements to something rather than typing them in each time.

For a very large model that won't fit into the allowed space, this could potentially slow things down due to using the HDD as 'virtual memory'.
If high virtual memory usage is causing a bottleneck, moving the virtual memory to a super-fast solid-state drive may help - but I don't use files anything like as large as yours, so I'm unable to say whether that would be a definite improvement in your case.

Reminds me of the downright goofy old trick of setting up a RAMdrive and moving some earlier version of Windows' pagefile to it, since that version wasn't capable of using even half the fairly common amount of memory for moderately high end machines at the time.
