Thank you Dave for the quick response.

I figured out the problem. It turns out the linetype scale ( @2X) was too small to see on the pdf unless zoomed in really far---despite it looking correct in Layout. I had to crank it up to 10X to get to read ok in the PDF.

The really issue seems to be that the linetype scale changes as you zoom in and out in Layout. That's a real bummer. It makes it difficult to work with linetypes in Layout. Difficult to get a sense of the graphic representation of a page without a lot of trial and error.

I guess I should post more. πŸ˜„ I've been watching SketchUcation for many years.

    Thanks again!

I have the same issue. Wonder if it is related to units. I'm in metric.

What I do is that I have a bunch of linetypes already tested for the effect I want and I copy their properties around.

Tried this way before, but it is a hard work to change all lines to white in all pages.

Well, that could be drawn inside sketchup even faster... And then you could convert that into a 3D model and render in Thea in an IBL background in the same day.

Mate, you may have missed the key words "design sketch".

    I didn't miss them!

My design sketches are done on site, on meetings and on paper. I don't know how much time I take to develop them.

Then, what you do call design sketches I do not have. I replace that by designing a model as my first plans are also related with space studies, not floor plans alone alone. My space studies quickly evolve to models and my models are quickly rendered.

I might still be talking about design sketches but inside Sketchup. They're not a morning's work, but a day's work.

From there a quick presentation emerges. A 3D one with LO plans and some renders. The main idea is there but also the main model.

As the idea evolves, the model evolves. There's also optimization there's also quick work, but there is not a 2D frame of mind. There's always a 3D take on things and a quick 2D LO output.

On some stages, not even the 2D output is needed as we are talking on space changes, nor floor plan, LO changes. At least not in a fundamental way.

Hi, since you run layout locally, you should ask your sys-admin to see if something went wrong with rights/rules for user/groups on disk/folder/subfolder on server where your files are stored.

PM your email address and I send you a SU file with hundreds! You can then just drag to LO and vectorise!

Gracious that's helpful, Box. As a former user getting back in the saddle, I'm amazed at all the useless lines I drew and erased to dimension to lines (not points). The tip should be a part of the SU docs and instruction.

I just tried the same process with Layout 14 and it is the same.

Are you perhaps remembering dimensioning in Sketchup and displaying in Layout? Because dimensions do update with geometry in Sketchup.

I am pretty sure layout has never worked like Sketchup does with respect to dimensioning.

It was certainly never a deal breaker for me,, but it definitely and source of frustration, inefficiency, and also greatly increases the likelihood of sending a drawing out with an incorrect dimension.

I have a very intense crosscheck protocol that I use with my drawings to help ensure that things like that don't slip through

    Chuck,
I emailed Matt Donley who wrote "Sketchup to Layout," (which I bought) and he said he also thought the dimensions "attempted to stay attached" in previous LO versions. But do not do so currently. In my work, this makes LO substantially slower for me to use than AC. I guess I'll be sticking with AC.

Looking at this. The first idea, a leader with more than one segment, is now natively possible. (Don't recall when that change was made).

MifCNY method is what I have always done in CAD but that may be because the CAD tool works differently and copying out the arrow was more hassle than drawing another.

    Hi,

I have been looking at the Excel table into LO thing (or lack of in the PC version). Here is my offering:

Create your table in Excel with cell widths, heights, font size and formulas. Make sure that any editable data can be copied and pasted as a block (for convenience).
Format a matching area in the spreadsheet as a swap area.
Select the entire table, copy and paste into LO. The table comes in as an editable text block with cells bordered in black lines.
Make any changes to data in individual cells. Note, no formulas are copied just the numbers.
Double click in the text box which will select all cell data.
Copy and then paste back into the Excel sheet but in the formatted swap area.
Select the data to be changed and paste into the original table position.
    The formula results will update.
Start back at the beginning! Re-copy the updated table and double click in the LO text box, paste.

Not perfect but seems to work. Basically it is a way of re-calculating a table using Excel and not having to do it manually.

There is no way to import text and line tepe, color. But...
We can import dwg to LayOut via SketchUp scene with style.
Then we can get vector and bitmap from imported SketchUp model, so you can change line type, color with LayOut way.

Set the imported SketchUp model (scene) to Hybrid or Vector. (Window menu - SketchUp model) Right crick imported SketchUp model and select 'explode' and 'ungroup'

I actually don't keep a single project on one LO file. I create LO files based upon the drawing type - Site plans, Floor plans, Elevations etc. This really helps speed things up and should disaster happen with a corrupted file, your entire project is not lost. Then you can simply book the PDFs into a sinlge PDF if you care to. I keep them separate as it is easy to issue individual files as needed.

Makes sense for auto numbering too. Keeping plans / elevations / sections in separate files means numbering prefixes work easily. πŸ‘
