I may be misunderstanding what you want to do. Have you created a "path" and you want to place your breakwater wall sections along the path? If so you could look at Component Stringer by Chris Fullmer http://sketchucation.com/pluginstore?pln=clf_component_stringer Comp String Sam D Mitch http://sdmitch.blogspot.com Path Copy http://www.smustard.com/script/PathCopy You'll find them useful even if it's not what you are wanting to do. If you are wanting a jumble of your shapes you could look at sketchy physics, but I suspect it would be a lot of setup just to drop them all in place.

@pbacot said: I must have missed the point. I didn't realize OP was looking to dimension the existing sides @dbwill said: The model has rounded corners and it makes it a little difficult to get accurate measurements for a side panel. Seems more important to learn how to get dimensions from a model as is rather than redrawing it square to get the measurements. By turning on hidden geometry you get edges that you can snap the dimension tool to more easily.

OK - I now know the the process. Here it is: From web-based topographic server (MnTopo in my case), zoom in to subject area, download "Contours" (not DEM). Zipped file e-mailed to you containing shapeless. Open in ArcGIS and back save to AutoCAD 2010 or earlier. Open file in Auto CAD, create bounding box, and clean up stray contours. Save as a .dwg . Open .dwg in SU and save as .skp et voila! Cheers, Jeff

The attached-file size limit is ~4Mb - so ZIP them if necessary. Direct attachment of SKPs is allowed but if you upload a SKB it needs to be inside a ZIP anyway, as there are only certain types of files allowed for direct uploading... Zipping will optimize the file size uploaded... I know you can't purge the SKP because you can't open it , but bear that in mind for the future. A SKP can shrink considerably when purged in Model Info > Statistics...

Regarding the message on the SketchUp forum: "Sorry, there was an error authorizing your account. Perhaps you did not approve authorization?", there was a problem on their end but it now seems to be sorted.

How do you determine the shapes of the curves? Are they catenaries? If so, you might use the Wire Tool plugin to draw them. Or you might use the Bezier Curve tool from Fredo's Bezier Spline set. Then use Curviloft or TIG's Extrude Edges by Rails to make the surfaces. I'm not able to provide screen shots at the moment so hopefully this will do.

This one-liner copy+pasted into the Ruby Console + <enter> will make a file named 'shortcuts-N.txt' on your Desktop, where '-N' is the SketchUp version, it then opens the file. f=(File.new(t=File.join(ENV['HOME'],'Desktop',"shortcuts-#{Sketchup.version.to_i}.txt"),'w'));f.puts(Sketchup.get_shortcuts.sort);f.close;UI.openURL("file;///#{t}")

That is really good news. I've done many, many renderings, and and am looking forward to using the program for construction drawings as well. Thanks for letting me know.

I suspect that half of them are NOT SKP files, BUT SKB files. That is a backup file. If you are working on a model and something goes disastrously wrong, then you can rename its SKB as a SKP. It's the version of the model at the point where you did your last save, so you only loose work back to that point in time. If you are no longer working on a model and are happy it's been saved OK, then keeping the SKP but removing the SKB is not an issue. Do you not backup your model files onto another drive etc, so if you have a catastrophic failure your earlier work is safe ?

Not easy to do such kind of parametric objects on sketchup... You should try Rhino and Grasshoper.

Hi Jean, that's a very objective aproach to conceptual process. Of course I think on such thing as space between table and wall and my stairs do have to fit somewhere there, but won't you need to bring some emotion to space someway along the process? I mean a room can be very small or very large you can even have a table folding from a wall. Eventually, with experience you know what is a fair size to have on a living room and a dinning room and so it all has to have some other kind of aproach to make things original... So wouldn't you think that a conceptual aproach shouldn't be that limited by those dimensions? My architectural aproach has not to do with bricks, tiles or tables, but it's about the meaning and feeling of a place. I guess that's why in architecture the opposite is also true.
