@Box I don't understand, I didn't 'quietly edit' anything, I just used the editor to edit my version one I knew what it was. I reinstalled and all working now.

    • Sketchup version 8 crashes on startup

      alt text

My Sketchup PRO 8 crashes whenever I try to start it it doesn't get any further than this error message I haven't made any changes to the system is anyone else seeing anything like this happening?

I’ve tried to restart machine and have everything else switched off, but no dice.

I Tried the subscription version in 2020 and it kept on refusing to identify my logon so I abandoned it and went back to the desktop version.

Saas is a terrible model for CAD software and I'll never use it

I wanted an irregular but repeatable tile recently and ended up using type 4 from here. I wanted to cut shapes from concrete waste, so I wanted a shape with not too tight angles to reduce breakage and simplify handling.

    • Rotate screen view plugin - trying to refind

Memory of what plugin looked likeI used to have a plugin that I could rotate my screen view with. So just the screen view, not the objects.

From memory it had a button one clicked on and a circle, poss. with an arrow (but I'm very unsure about that bit) in it popped up like the attached pic, and I would click in centre of circle and manually rotate the screen view to suit. I reinstalled a while back and can't find plugin.

Can anyone else remember it? and does a copy exist? I'd really like to use it again.

      I'm still using 2012/v8

    • How to install old .rb file to Sketchup Pro 21?

I'm restarting with Sketchup on version 21 and reinstalling some of my old plugins but cannot find a way to add .rb files as the extension manager only has a .rbz option.

Is there some other files that needs to be added to help it see older files? or something else?

My specific .rb is Drop 1.52 (no programmer id in file), it drops any selected objects to a user-defined height so it 'drops' upwards as well!

I do have an old version [v2.0] which is compatible with v8.
However, it's not as good as the newer version which are incompatible with v8.
I could PM you an EVAL [10 uses] version RBZ if you want it.
There is a v8 licensed version RBZ too, but for that I need proof of you buying it...

That'd be great TIG, I've DM'ed you my personal email in case it can't be sent on here.

Have you got the original contours?

If not use SUs native contours tool to make a set and then use Fredo's Toposhaper to make a new surface, this tool will also add sides to your terrain and usually makes a solid.

JPP is the wrong tool for this

Of course work in a file copy, and at the end del everything else.

    • Partial randomization of a grid of symbols

Hi all, I want to joggle the positions of a lot of symbols that are on a radial grid - see jpg attached. I thought there was a script that would joggle the positions of many objects according to simple parameters (like my example in the enc. jpg), but it mustve been a false memory!

Does anyone have a script that will at least randomize a rectangular or square grid?

The case is an experimental acoustic planting based on sonic crystal theory. The original rule this came from was:

"each tree is moved from its regular position, and placed randomly in the zone equal to 1/5th of the distance in between the trees". That was written for a square grid though.

Either my rule or the one above would be great.

    • RE: Will SketchUp Ever Wear Big Boy Pants?

The other day I needed to decide if a project was viable i.e. whether I could represent my client in a hearing. I needed to see if the site could be seen from a hilltop 15km away on another peninsula

      • so:
Quick download of DEM from Linz
Use QGIS to get some real contours
Import into sketchup and let it run,
5 mins later I had a decision that supports taking job to next level. It is called sketchup, it's the goto tool for thinking. While I still start with a pencil, if I want 3D my next stage is Sketchup.

Sketchup just needs a shp importer (and a DEM importer then I wouldn't need QGIS) - I understand 6 had a shp importer and they removed it. Why ever?

    • Contract CAD assistant needed - vectorworks and a bit of SU

      Hi All
I need a part-time contract CAD assistant for my landscape architecture business. Ideally you will be a New Zealand Tax Resident, although this is not a prerequisite.

      Capability
Vectorworks - I use VW Landmark 2008, but Fundamentals is all you should need; you just need to be able to save back to VW 2008 format. If you know any of Sketchup, BricsCAD, Autocad or MS Word/Excel that would be great. I often use the workflow where images/pdfs are produced via SU/LO and then referenced into VW.

My CAD style is straightforward and focussed on producing plans to construct, plant and maintain landscapes. I also do some site assessment/court work.

I typically carry out initial design in watercolour pencil and then take that to CAD to produce details. You would be supplied with annotated pencil drawings from which to work.

I only use VW's 2D capability and when I want planting schedules I just use VW's worksheet.

I do not use VW's plant database as have found it less than useful for custom projects.
For labels I just use text blocks and manual keylines but if you are happy using key that would be fine.

Where I want 3D I tend to use Sketchup Pro - 2008. I also do my cut and fill in SU using a plugin and then reference any graphics into VW.

A new job may entail some/all of the following:

      • Site address supplied to you
      • Get data from https://data.linz.govt.nz/ and export as dwg or other if required (data may also be sought from Google Earth as well as a list of NZ urls that will be supplied where needed).
      • Import shp/dwg and imagery into VW
      • Produce linework / polys from supplied artwork
      • Make table and link to polys and calculate numbers from plant spacing and density data as supplied
      • Make up sheet set as per notes and template supplied and place tables on sheets

      Likely to be 5-10 hours/week.
      Example plans avail. on request

    • 2017 - is it worth the change

Hi, So my reseller is saying upgrade now for much lower than full price. But is it worthwhile, what magic is possible with 2017 that's lacking in '12?

Will it run on my primitive hardware?
Is LO still outside SU? Has it improved.

I still do landscape and ecology so workflows include:
      large meshes
      counting objects
      cut and fill
      basic architecture
don't render except using a bit of kerky

SU2XL seems like the only stunning thing - which would enable me to cut the vectorworks cord - evil 10-horned beast that it is.

    • RE: Driverless Cars

"should a car be asked to make a decision between killing a child or elderly people when an accident is eminent?" Sounds like Asimov's three laws of robotics - always good to go back and read that stuff.

I was driving last night in torrential rain, with very shiny, slick, reflective streets (care of climate change NZ's climate has gone sideways, Southern summer is similar to a warmish winter, while the upper North Island is burning - none of it being reported as unusual when it's actually unprecedented ... but I digress) - little traffic about but very hard to see - nearly got hit by a mindless (but not yet driverless) Domino's pizza driver. If these things get going it will be very scary - also driverless cars are just another hackable device. What's wrong with driving anyway - it's a fun activity.

Robopocalypse - Daniel Wilson's (I believe he's a roboticist) dystopia has an AI hijacking all the driverless cars and driving them until the occupants starve, plus actively running over people. I can perfectly imagine this, just a matter of when.

    • Gravel grass aka schotterrasen planted hard surfaces

Hi, I'm trying to get schotterrasen e.g. http://www.schotterrasen.at (translates to 'gravel turf' in English) type surfaces installed in New Zealand as, to my knowledge it hasn't been done here yet. I know enough to design them and get them constructed - I just want to know more about their success in tougher applications.

Are you aware of installations in your region? If so what is your opinion of them, especially from a designers point of view - e.g. an industrial/commercial user's pov. Are you aware of any used in more industrial situations e.g. freight parks, industrial areas, highway shoulders, electricity substations etc.

Gravel turf/grass / schotterrasen goes by many names and is always a proprietary mix of layered aggregates, designed for a specific combination of uses, site and climate. Their advantages include low cost versus pavers/asphalt/concrete; the ability to completely and quickly recycle; high porosity in urban drainage cases; reduced heat-island effect and they are grassed so result in seamless landscapes.
