Pandemic has nothing to do with the severity of an illness it is to do with the geographical and demographic spread. It seems that stupidity is rapidly approaching pandemic status.

    • RE: Sketchup 7.1 bugs

I've had a couple of very odd SUpro crashes in the last few days; no crashlog, no report to Apple, just .... gone. The Console shows
      05-10-09 6:30:29 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[121] ([0x0-0x2c02c].com.google.sketchuppro7[296]) Exited with exit code: 1
      which isn't so very helpful.

Interestingly Layout has done the same thing a couple of times
      06-10-09 6:47:59 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[121] ([0x0-0x3af3af].com.google.LayOut[7913]) Exited with exit code: 1
Possibly associated with theLO crash are some messages about Intrinsic Alchemy v3.2 Beta-0903

I haven't been doing anything different to my normal work, the machine hasn't changed in recent days (no hardware alterations, no updates loaded etc) and it's all been running pretty well generally.

Not even faintly a new idea. I was working on a prototype device of this sort in 1989. And again in 1995. And again in 2002. The earliest 'serious' suggestion that I know of was in Alan Kay's PH.D. thesis from 1969 but it's faintly possible one might have to consider a few mentions from assorted SF stories as well.

Thanks Al; interesting. It's outside my scope of knowledge in this case but I'd bet somebody round here knows about the relevant bits.

If you could explain what parts of this are directly related to Windows it may be that some of us Mac users could help to make it a bit more portable....

Can you attach a sample LO doc for us to look at?

Sure; here's a very simple one with just a block and two section cuts. It seems I should have written 'hybrid' rather than 'raster' though. This is what I see...

    • Section planes display when not supposed to

I had reason to make some LO views using the raster rendering this morning and was surprised that the images came out rather 'washed out' looking. After a bit of poking it looks like the various section planes in my model are getting rendered as translucent planes despite the scene specifying that they are not shown.

Seems a bit of a bug to me....

OK, I hadn't noticed that the dimensions were so alterable in LO. Cool.

Now here's an interesting conundrum; let us assume we have arrived at the time when LO dimensions work perfectly (ie they keep up with changes in the model at least as well as the current SU dimensions do, etc etc) - so does SU lose its dimensioning? Do they stay but take on the style from the LO setup? Are they chocolate coated?

Tim, not sure I see your point. You want crappy SketchUp dimensions in LayOut? Try printing them.

Well I don't think SU dimensions are crappy (except in that arrow heads should sometimes be outside the dimension lines rather than inside) and I haven't seen anything that makes me think I can change the style of them. What have I missed?

Tim, its a 'feature'. SU drops some details when the frame rate drops below a certain level so you can still orbit smoothly.

Glad you put quotes around that. What really bugs me (and would typically bug most people) is the inconsistency. We can handle apparently slow actions if they're consistently slow, and sometimes you ought to put in delays for cases where the job finishes 'too soon' in order to keep a consistent response time.

      @remus said:

You can change the delay on how long SU waits before redrawing the model through ruby, which i wrote this little script for. [/blatant self promotion]

Interesting. I'll give it a try, though oddly enough I hardly saw the effect at all during this afternoon's work.

      1. (I put this in the main forum and realised it ought to go here, so here it is)
I'm seeing some annoying behaviour when zooming/orbiting. Sometimes the textures and dimension layer(s) are not displayed whilst moving the model and sometimes they are. If they are not displayed, there is a really annoying wait after stopping moving before they re-appear. Clearly, since the system is quite capable of displaying the full picture there is no performance reason to delay the re-display and there must be some timer/flag/whatever that is set to 'annoy user maximally'.

It's the inconsistency that will drive people nuts.

Possible learning opportunity for us all; how about posting drawings that you want to be able to do with SU/LO but think it can't handle? I'd bet that in a lot of cases someone here will be able to explain just how to create them.

Ya, just stumbled across that. It certainly does the job OK, which solves the immediate problem. In the shortcuts listing you only get to open that dialogue though, not use any of it's commands. I imagine there might be a way to access it via Ruby but I'm not really interested in digging down there right now.

OK, is there any way to persuade LO to update from a changed SU file without using a context menu? I can't see one- not even by hooking up a shortcut key.
