It makes any natural food and nutrition illegal by law.

Well that's not quite what it says. It says they want to stop so-called natural foods from being sold as medicinal or therapeutic items without valid claims. Simply because something is 'natural' does not mean it is healthy or beneficial.
Arsenic is natural - there's a lot of it in the water in the region where I live. It's deadly.
      Botulism is natural. It's deadly.
Belladonna is deadly at some levels and helpful at others.
Many ayurvedic traditional 'medicines' have large amounts of mercury. It's deadly.
Synthetically made vitamin C is exactly the same as 'natural' vitamin C.

I did see a video from a woman from this Bauman College or something and she says that if this law is passed people will die of starvation and preventable deceases. She says 3 billion, if I'm correct that's half of the world's population.

      Total and utter nonsense.
We have this thing called 'science'. It's proven rather good at making the world a better place when applied properly. Even if one were to utterly cynical about the motivation of Big Pharma (oooh, scary) what possible motivation could they have to push for laws that would reduce their customer base by half? Sheesh.

Both Britain and Ireland have I think too liberal an attitude
with regard to unproven political refugees. Here in Ireland,
and I think its the same in the UK, they are treated much the
      same a citizens.

Well, I'm not sure I could make a good argument for trusting 'citizens' not to be bad guys. I remember getting targetted twice by bombs back in the 80's. By persons that were certainly 'citizens' - and definitely past tense; they didn't get second chances. The idea that simply because you are born somewhere, or are naturalised to some legal citizenship status, that you are therefore more trustworthy doesn't seem sensible.

If there are supposed to be security checks then they should be the same for anyone regardless of national origin, racial background, political affiliation, religious leanings - and if circumstances mean you can't get good answers then it should be a case of "sorry Mr/Mrs/Miss X, without positive information we are not able to employ you". Certainly that might result in a few decent people not getting the job but if one wants a proper security system it is better to be careful. Of course, almost all the so called security measures in place at airports around the world are nothing to do with anything other than 'security theatre'.

THere's been some discussion of problems wth recent versions of SU on leopard on machines with the intel GMA graphics - mini and macbook for example.
See http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2753 for some of it.

As I understand it, there is some problem with synchronising the frame drawing and the OGL system and... whatever. Inio provided a patch that appears to work for a lot of people; whilst it won't make you mini draw faster it will generally stop it beachballing

    • RE: SU multi-processor usage

Basically there is no chance that SU would be the only thing running - OSs just don't have only a single process/thread wanting cpu time these days. It's entirely possible that your copy of SU is running for a moment on one cpu and then getting some time on the other. It will depend on the scheduling policy used in the OS, the other threads, interrupts, events... etc.
If SU is running and something 'more important' demands time then SU will get put on the back-burner for a while. If some time becomes available on the other CPU you might well get it. The downside of swapping cores is that the content of the cache(s) that you were benefiting from is lost. Well, unless there is some very clever stuff going on that I've not heard of.

Looking in my applications folder I see
Image Tricks (http://www.belightsoft.com) - filters and transforms on images
ImageWell (http://xtralean.com) - image edit, crop, resize, annotate, web previewy stuff
Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org) - drawing etc. Uses X11 and looks horribly like a windows app but is pretty good otherwise
LineForm ( http://freeverse.com/lineform/) - I paid actual money for this. Can even read pdfs and 'parse them' into graphic entities so you can edit them.
Picturesque (http://www.acqualia.com/picturesque/) - does pretty things to images

Aside from LineForm they're all no-cost.

I have little experience of modern Macs, but the default middle button behaviour in my daughter's Imac Mighty Mouse was to bring up Dashboard. To orbit in SU, I had to change that in the Mouse control panel into button 3 (if I remember right).

D'oh! Yes, you're right you do have to change the mouse button settings. I did it so long ago that I clean forgot and of course those preferences got carried across when I migrated my stuff across machines.

I turn off the stupid side buttons as well. Damn nuisances. And I turn off dashboard because it is even more of a nuisance.

    • Cutlist.rb writes to wrong direcctory

Although the cutlistandmaterials.rb creates an amazingly useful spreadsheet it writes it to a realyl dumb place; not by design but because the filename is constructed by
      namecsv = mpath + "/" + mname + "-CutList.csv"
      and 'mpath' is found with
      mpath = Dir::pwd
Sadly on my Mac this appears to prodcue an empty string since the .csv file is always written to the root directory and not to somewhere useful like, say, the same directory that the model came from.

Is the Dir::pwd method simply wrong on a Mac? Is the plugin using the wrong way to find the path?

I recently got a 2.4GHz 24" iMac and it seems to run SUPro very nicely. It's quiet, attractive, involves fewer wires straggling all over the place, drives my spare 20" HP lcd as well (so I have 3500*1200 display in effect) and generally makes me feel all warm and happy.
All-in-one is a perfectly ok idea if you accept that you will not be opening the case to install 4 drives, swapping the dvd-r for a bluray, adding some obscure PCI card etc. If you actually need that capability you need to buy a MacPro.

The scrollball nippley-thing works fine for orbit/pan for me, even when the left 'button' is down.
Oh and do have an external disk for your TimeMachine. Right now I have a 250Gb FW800 but I'll probably get a TimeCapsule since it will make it easier for the other half dozen Macs in the house to back up.

Wow. Jackson, if you've truly never seen PC users criticising Mac users then you must have found some wonderfully polite forums. The arguments and bile, vituperation and nastiness are rampant across the net and were rampant before the spread of the net! Any of the rude and stupid things people have said about SU (there's a thread about that on this very site) have their analogue and worse in the PC vs Mac slanging matches - you certainly can't dignify them with the word 'debate'.

I've been around computers a long time and until recently didn't use either Mac or PC as my main machine so I had no horse in the race - and for that I used to get even more bile spat at me. I'm reasonably sure I've used professionally every 'major' OS and every CPU. They're all pretty bad if we're honest. When it came time to choose a new machine for myself though there wasn't really any competition to a Mac in my opinion.

Well all of us running OS X 10.4.11 can upload to the 3d-warehouse again. That's a much appreciated fix.

Unfortunately the same doesn't appear to be the case for my OSX 10.5.1 iMac. I just tried uploading a simple model with a strange partial result.

      a) the warehouse window was very slow to appear and took about a minute before I could type into it.
      b) actually uploading produced a progress bar that just displayed the blue barber-pole pattern and sat there. I left it for several minutes but nothing changed. I was able to move the model around though.
      c) on checking the warehouse via Safari I noticed that my model seems to be partially there. Instead of the downloading menu showing 'sketchup 6 .skp' it shows 'Collada (.zip)' which means nothing to me. What is Collada? apart from something you put a pina in?
      d) attempting to download this 'collada' doesn't produce anything I can make use of.

The model is http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=355c41f107a8ff2cc274799cf1faeca7 in case that helps.

The version of this new SU6Pro shows as 6.4.120, my machine is a new iMac 2.4GHz core2duo with OS X 10.5.1 fully updated, 2Gb ram, etc. I've also noticed some odd hesitations in Pan; previous version did not hesitate if I pressed shift and mouse-middle-button to Pan, this one hesitates for about a second before moving the view. Oh, it also happens if I just use the Pan tool.
