That is simply beautiful. I am really inspired now. I am assuming you used sub+smooth right? and did you just use the move tool to manipulate the geometry for the tufting and little details? and it would be very interesting to know a general idea of what areas you had to crease before using sub +smoothe? One last thing, how did you get your geometry to be subdivided into boxes of four triangles? mine only divides it into boxes of 2 triangles. (sorry if that does not make sense). Oh and do u think we could get an SU6 version of this. Again great work, and thanks to all for their suggestions

Thanks. I'm glad that you're stoked. Oftentimes just knowing that it can be done makes a job easier.

I did use SubSmooth, of course, but no other rubies -- just regular SU tools. I didn't use the SS crease tool, either. After I created the cylindrical shape that would give me the cushion shape, I subdivided it with the SubSmooth Subdivide-only tool. That gave me a bunch of working geometry to hack away at. I did all of the detail work by drawing lines where I wanted them and deleting the stuff I didn't want.

Here's an export of version 6:

      Terry,
That looks great! How long it take?
      Jeff

      Thanks Jeff,

That was the third try, and I think it took about 3 hours. I saved the successful steps as I went, so here's what the sequence looked like:

      Chair1.jpg
I didn't try to exactly duplicate the chair cushion from the example, so my model has a slightly more open pattern. I started with a standard SU circle (24 sides), and perhaps 36 sides would make a tighter pattern that looked more like the photo.

And if anyone would like the .skp of the above, here 'tis... ๐Ÿ’šChair.zip

    • RE: Organic Chair Model Question....I need help?

I thought I'd give this a try just to see what I could come up with. I just did the chair cushion, which appears to be the tricky part. The SS'd image on the right is a single iteration from the proxy:

      Chair2.jpg
So, the chair is definitely doable in SketchUp, but it's a lot of detail fussing... ๐Ÿ’š

If your push/pull will work for a limited distance (it refuses to go beyond a certain point), you can often make it go beyond that point by keying a greater length in the measurement input box in the lower right hand corner and hitting ENTER.

I found that pattern on line with a quick Google search of "jigsaw pattern." Here's how it looks in SU:

    • RE: Silent crashes

I had this happen to me yesterday for the first (and only) time. Surprised hell out of me -- SU just vanished. No messages, just POOF!

I was doing speculative shapes. Nothing special, just seeing what shapes I could make from simple forms with SubSmooth. I wasn't using SubSmooth when SU vaporized -- I was moving a couple of selected lines along the green axis with the move tool. It wasn't a size issue, as the model was trivial. I recovered the autosaved model and continued, repeating the same steps that had preceded the POOF, and there were no further problems (I continued playing with the model for another hour or so).

Since this has never happened before, I'm guessing it may be due to the presence of one or more rubies that I added to my Plugins folder in the last week or so. In reverse order (most recent first), they are:

      2/13/2009: deletecoplanaredges.rb
      2/11/2009: clf_greeble_2.rb
      2/10/2009: ZLoader_FreeScale.rb
      2/10/2009: LibFredo6.rb
      2/10/2009: Zorro2.rb
      2/8/2009: offset.rb

I'm not blaming any one of these rubies, because none of them were in active use at the time. I might have used deletecoplanaredges earlier in the session, but I'm sure I hadn't used any of the others. I did notice when making this list that I had the earlier clf_greeble in the Plugins folder along with the newer _2 version, so I removed the old one.

Another possibility -- there was a major patch to Windows XP from Microsoft this week... ๐Ÿ˜’

      @dale said:

I find myself quite often drawing something that is destined to become a component in a model, then either painstakingly selecting all the lines one by one, grouping and finishing off the above mentioned component, or doing the old marquee selection trick (only to find I have also selected 1/2 the geometry hidden behind what I am working on and), well you know.
So to get to the point, is there some way to take advantage of the strength of the eraser tool, the part where you hold down the mouse key and scruff around like a real eraser picking up lines, only instead of erasing those lines, save them as a group that you can enter and work on? It could be like a vacuum tool. Give Sang something to do ๐Ÿ˜„

You can use the eraser tool, select all the lines, then hit the spacebar. That leaves the lines selected but cancels the eraser. You can then right-click and group the selected lines... ๐Ÿ’š

I thought I'd give a cartoon character (or two) a shot (and I figured that it will be a while before Solo gets around to old Disney movies), so here are two famous dancers from the 1940's Disney studio:

It would also be nice if SubSmooth could be executed on a selected portion of a mesh without extending the effect outside the selected area (you can almost do that by making the selected area a group, but then you have to go back and patch up the boundary when you ungroup).

And it would be nice if there was an entry to specify a minimum length for the side of a triangle. In other words, if you said that wanted two iterations with a minimum of 1", then no line would be drawn that was shorter than that, and only larger triangles would be subdivided.

And I'd like World Peace, too... ๐ŸŽ‰ ๐Ÿ’š
