    • RE: Chain rings (bicycle related) [TUTORIAL]

      Here is the final product.

I did make each inner spoke into one component. The trouble is that there are five spokes and that doesn't divide equally into the number of teeth on most of the rings. So I didn't feel like making it perfect which means there are some small gaps. On some of the smaller rings I just exploded the whole ring and made it into one component.

All in all it was a good project and I learned a bunch thanks to you guys. It was a bit of a tangent I went off on because I dont even need the cog set for the bike I am working on. I just like how RSW's model looked and wanted to have a go at it.

      File size was 1.7MB.

      Cheers

    • RE: Edit geometry simultaneously across groups

Yes you are right you can't do that in Sketchup that I know of. I have used other CAD programs that can do what you want. If you just want to make a wall longer you could just scale it.

    • RE: Edit geometry simultaneously across groups

You are talking about groups which on do not change when changes are made to them. Make your geometry into components instead of groups. Then when you modify one the others change as well.

Hope this is what you are after.

    • RE: Send to layout to same location problem

I am no expert but will try and help.

So you have drawn a grid in sketchup and put it on a layer. Good Idea.
Your perimeter rectangular envelope/line is also in the model? Not sure what scale you are trying to achieve but it sounds like you want whats in the square to be on each sheet in layout in the exact same place on each layout page?

Are you using scenes in sketchup for each of your views you want in layout? Or are you just trying to control the views by turning on and off layers?

If I was going to try and do this I would use one scene for each view wanted. I would use a line above the model and use it to create my view for every scene with the position camera tool and then control the visibility with layers.

Now when you import you model into layout you can use your scenes to create your first viewport now just copy one view from your first page and paste in place to the next page. That takes care of all of your views being the same. Now on each page you should be able to adjust the view to each of your scenes to show different visibility of the model.

Not sure what a imvu product is?

Adding a mesh to you model or are taking about adding a mesh to your layout drawings?

Adding any kinda image would help us under stand more of what you are trying to do.

    • RE: Chain rings (bicycle related) [TUTORIAL]

Hey Dave I was playing around with erasing the interior faces last night. It does make the model look much better. The problem I have is that all the teeth on one ring are divided up equally which doesn't all ways divide in to 360 within 0.000 degrees which is the limitation of sketchup. So there are going to be some overlapping of edges or spaces. And now I have been milling out the insides of the rings to loose some weight and adding some holes for the rivets to mount the rings to the hub. Which is also going to be a problem for the looks of the finished model because I am dividing the hole mounts into 5 spokes which need to match up to the teeth which are divided up into different numbers. Kinda hard to explain. I will post some more pixs tonight. The computer I am modeling on is not hooked up to the internet.

Ahhh ok now I see the magenta showing. I have played with changing the back face color in the past but found no use for it so I haven't continued with the practice. I am going to going to clean up the model by hiding a lot of the geometry when I am done but see no benefit to erasing the interior faces yet.

      Thanks for the tighter crop.

Could you please be more specific about which ring is showing magenta sparkles. I dont see them. The middle one to me is the brown one. I have been diligent about the white face facing out but have not payed any attention to the internal faces that you are recommending to delete.

Thanks for the little story board Dave. Its so much easier to express your ideas in pictures.

Its still a work in progress. I still need to shape the teeth on the last few cogs and then boar out the hole in the middle for the splines. Then I have to Mill out the backs of each cog to loose some weight and make room for the collar to attach each cog to the hub. I like keeping all of the geometry on so I can rotate the cogs easier. I will hide and clean up the model last.

      Whats wrong with interior faces?

So far the file is about .7 mega bites.

    • RE: Plugins for mac?

Holy crap John you sure have it organized. Thanks for the great tutorial but I think its a little over my head for now. I don't have any plugins that adds their own 'layers', 'materials' or 'components' on 'start-up'. But my template that I set up does have a couple of layers. I am reasonably happy with the set up I have now. Its only a hobby where I waste time in the evenings. I Work on a different CAD system at work all day that is dialed. I wish I could have a couple more custom tool bars but this is fine for now.

The only thing really bugging me right now is the little ruby updater that pops up every time I start up sketchup.

      Cheers

Just to clarify. If sketchup is closed and I go to a sketchup file and double click it, it opens sketchup. Now if I close the window (sketchup is still open) and open the same file again by double clicking the same file in a folder it will then remember my tool bars?

      Yes.

This doesn't seem to work for me.

My solution I have found some where on here is. Make custom tool bar then save as a template. I open sketchup then I open new file from template which gives me my custom tool bar. Now I open file I need from a folder by double clicking it. Now I have to close the new template and then start working on what I wanted.

Is there a way to have more than one custom tool bar on a mac? Besides the main one on top of the screen.

    • RE: Sketchup on Mac?

I find sketchup crashes just as much on the mac as the PC. The Paint bucket tool is much better on a PC. If you have 12gb of ram now I am thinking you will not see any faster performance with a new mac book pro. Not sure what the max up grade of ram is on the mac book pro but I am sure its no where near 12gb.
