oh, I love Peter!
perhaps we should open up a Peter Zumthor obeisance thread sometime. but it is really difficult to get pictures of his buildings on the internet...

oh, that would be great! I simply love that vehicle!
and in one months time you have a new chanllenge - modelling the batpod

well, then my request will be the Tumbler!

oh dear, I simply love the mixture between hummer and lamborghini...

(and I cant wait for the next batman movie to come out at the end of july) -
RE: Matching arc segment length
I set the precision to the maximum of 0.000 degree angles, but it still doesn't seem to be working.
maybe the error lies in the offset (I created a 3D wall). perhaps I should be more carefull when using the offset tool.
but in the meantime I will endure larger segments (I am just to lazy to redraw everything
) -
RE: Matching arc segment length
thanks for the replies, TIG and Gaieus.
I tried your second suggestion for the last two hours - the one with wall components. however, if the arc has a huge radius and the segments are rather small I encounter another barrier: SketchUps inaccuracy!

every segment has to be rotated only a tiny bit - but SU allowes only a certain precision. because it is a rotation it doesn't help me to scale everything up (the rotation stayes the same).
I really hope that is something that will improve in SU7.
I am going back to creating much bigger segments now...

it is a beauty indeed!

Matching arc segment length
hi everyone,
I am trying to figure out the best way of how to match the length of the segments of an arc with the these of a neighbouring ark with different radius.
it is a fassade of a building that curves in two different radiuses. in order to use a component for windows I intended to adjust the length of each arc segment to the width of a window. but for that I need to keep the same spacing at differently curved walls.

I know, that I can change the number of segments for an arc (simply by typing it into the entity info). but I am not aware of a way to define the segment length (which automatically changes the number of segments to fit). I don't even know where to look for the length of the arc (the only information provided in the entity info is it's radius).
if anybody has a good idea how to achieve a continuous pace of segments throughout the whole length of the curved wall, I would be delighted!
(perhaps I should put up a ruby request for an "equal all segment lengths" script...)cheers,
Jakob

RE: Proxy Battle
Rendering!!!
Fred, you simply have to try rendering. this sculpture would look so great (either as a frosted glass model or even a sub surface scattering material (like skin)).
you should really go to this site, download the newest indigo (and skindigo plugin) version and produce some nice renders (with barely more work than one mouseklick click)

RE: Interior ilumination - Living room
really a very atmospheric lighting. I am looking forward to see some more results of your intense studies

RE: Different line widths
well you can get at least something like this with coloured edges:

but the thickie script sounds interesting... if you can get your hands on it, could you give us a short review?
cheers,
Jakob

RE: Different line widths
unfortunately I am not aware of a way to change this.
the only thing we can do is painting edges in different grayscale colours; that gets a bit towards line weights... (but it is of course not the same).
a very tedious workaround (which provides you with different line weights) is to export the different elements seperately, changing the thickness of the profiles in the styles editor. later you can merge all the images to one final drawing (in photoshop for example).
there is maybe a third way by exporting a dxf-file and importing it into illustrator (where you, as far as I know, are able to change line weights). I have never worked with that app though, therefore can't give you any tips. but I think someone in this forum did use this way (can't remember who)

RE: Which rubies for better camera movement in animations?
splines are a good idea, for they give a huge ammount of control.
however, we have to bear in mind, that we are talking about SketchUp - the one 3D app with the easiest user-interface!
I would very much prefer controls that are simple to use and seemlesly blend into the workflow of SU (like the wonderful SkIndigo plugin does - double clicking a material to get advanced settings for rendering...)
so even if we used splines for camera movement/speed control, we have to think carefully about the way to implement them. SketchUp is a one window application (has only one stage, in which all the work is done). we should not go too far in another direction...

You don't even know how close you are to REALITY

I've seen things (that can ALREADY be done in SU NOW) that'd amaze you! Please, wait a couple of weeks.well that sounds really promising, Gaieus. now you made me really

but in the meantime we could develope the idea even further. what for example is about the sharing of textures? if one member of the conference adds a texture... will it be uploaded to the others instantly or not until he presses an update button (to keep traffic down)?
or: could we implement a peer to peer network (what it has to be in any case, I think), where you can use SketchUp to share files (simply drag a file from your computer onto the avatar of one of your friends and the file will be uploaded...)

RE: Join Tool?
another (very dirty) way is to select the whole geometry, right click > intersect selected
now it is all one piece of geometry. the only thing you have to do is selecting the lot again, right click > soften/smooth edges.
make sure to check the "soften coplanar" check box. put the slider between 20 or 30 and all the unwanted edges will be invisible (note, that they are not erased, but simply smoothed - therefore Chris' way with components is definitely the cleaner and more preferable one
) -
SketchyConferences
this idea is very farfetched and I don't know if it has any other purpose than fun. thats why I placed it in the wish list and not in the ruby section.
many months ago I talked with a fellow student about a design (by chatting in skype) to communicate our ideas we used an online drawing application (even simpler than paint...). since then I never got this idea out of my head, this little dream of such a tool within SketchUp - "SketchyConferences" so to speak.
I don't know, how it will look like. perhaps with little images of every member on one side of the screen.

(pav_3j, solo, remus, I hope you don't mind me taking your avatars - I just took you randomly)
you should be able to chat with each other (by clicking on one of the icons to open up the console). alternatively you could have audio- and video connection (whereas the little image is replaced by the video).
every member of the conference has his own cursor - all cursors are visible and labeled.
every one can draw and manipulate geometry in the stage (I don't know how right management will be handled yet). all alterations are visible to the members in realtime.
what do you think of this idea?
what is important to make this work?
what nice tools could be added?again, this is only a dream. so feel free to post all your wonderful ideas.

Writing and reading (counts as one). Without it much of the knowledge on how to do pretty much everything would be lost, imagine having to re-invent things over and over because there wasn't a way to record it the previous time.
and we had to live without all those beautyful ruby scripts (these are text-files after all)

RE: Proxy Battle
and again I enjoy seing one of your new sculptures, Fred.
the proxy is a wonderful piece of art by itself (in fact, I am not sure, which I like more
