So i guess the conclusion is it works for some people and not for others although we all share the same program.

if a smart phone can understand speech almost flawlessly, why can't the same be done with sketchup? instead of wasting time looking for a component in a custom library's long list, just say what you want...and bingo, you're done. even if you use the library's search utility, it still takes time to type.....plus the search utility times-out and acts finicky.

Create a cylinder with a line thru its core, make it a component, place it on a line so the two lines coincide, explode the component and make it a group while it is still selected. Now move the group, however, its core line remains embedded in the other line. What's going on here?

thanks - I am now adding the following to my cheat sheet:
"skp - you can change axes of a group without clicking the axes toolbar icon. just right click the axis and choose 'place' while the group is open for editing."

My preference for converting groups to components at the load-in stage is due to resizing at least 85% of the time. i would then say, what is the difference between having a hundred different groups or a hundred unique components? but i actually lose my customized axis location when the conversion happens - which can sometimes be a problem. I wish Trimble could preserve the axis as an option. anyway, i must protect the need to prevent rogue components from unknowingly changing. Also, this subject may have been concerning for others since Box mentioned an extension that someone went through the trouble of generating. for sketchers using glue and cut-in features, i suppose components are a must. Another thing about components hiding in my model - if i combine several groups into one, and later resize the group not knowing one of the entities is actually a component, the component remains unchanged - and the repair work just cuts into my time.

Why do I not see an option to navigate to my custom scrapbook folder when I look thru the scrapbook inspector panel dropdown list?

Rich - (i knew i would be asked this question) I bring a component into a model and make copies of it and place them in different locations as the model progresses. now i need to change something in the component - thinking it's alone, meanwhile, i've forgotten it has copies elsewhere. by the time i discover the blunder it's too difficult to backtrack. yes i know i could have made it unique, but this is how my workflow developed. i do wish the selection box that forms around the component would be a different color than a group's. that would stop me in my tracks. yes i know i could look at the entity inspector - but i find it time consuming.

Dragging a component from my custom library into a model often proves detrimental because i forget to convert it into a group. Can a custom library for groups only be considered?

When using the Ctrl key to copy/move an object, is there anyway to orthogonally lock the inference - especially on a crowded drawing? Or am I limited to copy/paste-in-place and then move it with the shift key engaged? Grid snap is off and object snap is on.

I see what you mean. I was looking for the option in the context menu when the group is open for editing.
