Tom, Are you using many custom materials? That relatively low video RAM caught my eye. I used to have Radeon cards. Going from 128 MB to 512 MB caused a noticeable improvement. Not earth-shattering by any degree, but definitely noticeable: movement was spiffier, there were less dropping into wire-frame and loss of a few images when orbiting.

Your custom materials reportedly rely more on videocard memory than system RAM.

Back to general maintenance, a nice little free utility program is called CCleaner - C stands for crap, so I naturally like it. It just deletes accumulating crap, like system logs, cookies, assorted temp files, etc, from one convenient location. And under Option/Cookies it allows you to manage what cookies you would like to always keep around (like the cookie from this forum).

A great wealth of computer maintenance articles and other factoids are over at http://aumha.org/articles.htm. All his resources/forums/etc are still in the process of being updated for Vista. One place to start is Computer Health http://aumha.org/a/health.htm . On that same page is a link to Parasite Fight - yet another cause of mysterious problems. Some of the utilities for that fight will also help unclutter a system.

And I encounter some computer repair techs who dislike Norton products, saying they can needlessly junk up a system and just be another cause of problems.

Mover will only work with groups and components http://sketchuptips.blogspot.com/2007/08/plugin-mover-2.html . And look at Render Plus plugins Space Design and Retools http://forums.renderplus.com/wiki/index.php?title=RpTools . Space Design is a free subset of RpTools. RpTools has additional things like making alpha channels within SU, a nice Component Explorer window, component axis aimer, PDF stuff, and eventually Flat Path will be reintroduced, etc. Al's move wizard will move individual bits of geometry.

Yes, it would be very useful.

I'm supposing when you said you have several scripts, those are for different cabinet types?

    • RE: Question - a way to select a set of veritces/end points

There's another option. Scale has lots of subtle 3D control. If only an edge is selected, tugging on the top/bottom, dead-center handle will only raise/lower an end. Tugging at one of the selected edge corner handles would lengthen/shorten the edge along its vector, etc...

Selecting a face would be similar.

Face and edge combinations can be scaled. Works swell while in hidden geometry.

For the greatest control, orbit around the model so the cursor tugging on the handle is in front of some geometry. The closer the geometry is located the better. That's one way to harness inference - using neighboring geometry to finesse/steer the handles. Otherwise scale may seems to go wacko.

Smoove and Smoove+Shift work, and an offset can be set for controlled, incremental bumping. But I don't use it much. Fine-tuning shapes often means tweaking as little as one edge at a time.

And of course tools like nudge.rb, nudge bits and pieces. That's real handy.

Using scale to move vertices like this means some initial 3D movement of geometry first to get a 3D bounding box.

    • RE: Graphics Card Problem

The 8000 series cards are ready for DirectX 10. By any chance did you upgrade to that? The video drivers for openGL rendering under DirectX 10 are in their infancy. Try going back to DirectX 9.

To test for DirectX performance: Start > Programs > Accessories > System Information > Tools > DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

Adjust hardware acceleration in SU. Is acceleration set to be controlled by the program?

Is this a hardware upgrade? If so, you may have to adjust your BIOS, maybe even update other system chip drivers. But take it easy on unnecessary driver upgrade and flashing the BIOS stuff. Go to the download section for your motherboard. Go easy on this. Much of it may be unnecessary.

Go back to technical support at NVidia and see if they have some knowledgebase info/advice on configuring a happy system. Is your power supply adequate? All your parts have to play together nicely - RAMs, CPU, XP, BIOS, software, hardware, etc.

Have you maintained your HD for optimal performance?

Keep a record of your system 'improvements' encase you have to undo anything.

Each computer is a unique beast. Google can't control for that.

    • RE: New script: Projection toolbar update

I did select all lines and the face. Only one line would project.

The line on the left had three segments and the line on the right was welded. I also tried a circle entity, only selecting the outer edge lines to run the tool. In every case, only one segment would project.

I am running a new installation of SU6, XP Pro.

Thank you for this great toolbar (although I do miss the line2cyl though, it was very convenient to have a button for that feature. I saw the other post about working out the intersection issue).

Being able to use the VCB and inference to control the Extrude selected lines along a vector tool is very elegant ๐Ÿ˜„ And the documentation is very good.

I cannot get Project selected line perpendicular to plane to work. Only one edge is projected. I tried both selecting connected segments and welded segments.

You also may be interested in a script called MaxtrixProximity. It's at the Ruby Library Depot in the geometry section http://www.crai.archi.fr/RubyLibraryDepot/Ruby/en_sections.html . It will substitute poly-heavy models for simplified models depending on the camera distance.

I happened to reinstalled SU6. And among a few of the changes, the Templates folder is now hiding in C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6\Resources\en-US\Templates. And there are now 6 language versions of SU6 - just to make things a little more fun.

Something that I was thinking, using the cow example, could just the mid-section be selected to make her pregnant?

Often when sculpting in SU, I like to be able to do my manipulations/tweaking inside the protective confines of a group or component. Otherwise it's very easy to be overly focused on geometry in front of you and accidentally delete something in the distance.

Yes. While I can manipulate tools to get the same results, this would be a nice additional tool.

Would it be able to work on selected bits of a model or only on an entire chunk of geometry?

Filter_extension is comprised of filter_extension.rb and the folder filter. The script quick_selection.rb was included in the filter folder.

I do not have a folder called quick selection.

Layer_manager_install.jpg is a picture of plugin folder for installation. You do not need it in the program.

The txt files are benign. They do not cause a problem. In your case, they are instructions.
