My pic makes my ears and nose look big. I reality they are much smaller.

I had no idea that Dave R was the Dave R of finewoodworking. Boy do I feel like a fool.

RE: Newbie: Furniture project SU best practices?
Dave R, would you mind posting one of your skp files as an example? That would probably be the quickest way of actually seeing how you set your files up. Maybe post some pics of your projects, that would be cool too.

Pilou,
Currently the bonzai3d trial expires after its time period, but we are evaluating different "trial models" for the (near) future. If (before this new version is available) you have not had sufficient time to evaluate bonzai3d fully by the time it expires, please send an email to support@bonzai3d.com and we will see what we can do to give you some more time.
Man you guys at Bonzai are on it. Google could learn a few things about customer relations from you.

Does OBJ support views/cameras?
i don't think so, i was suggesting perhaps a new or modified importer based on the obj importer that could properly handle 3DS.
does someone care to do Googles job for them yet again?
Exactly, way beyond tired of waiting for Google.

RE: Bonzai 2.0 released
They are making some pretty big promises with 2.0. I hope they hold true.

The big problem IMO is that the BIM packages, contrary to what their marketers say, are still largely works in progress

I can't agree more with the above quote. We aren't using it yet and have no desire to move into it anytime soon. We keep hearing from the larger firms with large projects that it's the way to go or the future of architecture. Well, for us smaller firms it serves as nothing more than an yet another inflated promise from a company that is all to ready take another +5000.00 dollar per seat for something that has to be bundled with another one of their +5000.00 dollar per seat packages just to create complete construction documents. It's brilliant from their perspective. As long as people keep buying it they will keep selling it, finished or not.
Sorry for the rant. No we don't use it and won't until 1.)It can finish a job without support from Autocad or 2.)the client demands it. Sadly the second seems to be whats driving it forward.

RE: [Plugin] Selection Toys
Great tool. Thank you for sharing with the community.
After reading Daniel Tal's book I was thinking that a tool like this would be very handy.
Have you given any thought to trying to select like Blenders ring/chain command.

Hurry Google!
Just gave the free version a spin with old heavy model, and it's just much faster to update!
It's a shame with the missing dwg/dxf import as I use it every time I start a project in sketchup, but now that Google takes this fine software seriously, I just might by the pro version
Careful about that "taking it seriously" comment. IMO they have a long way to go before they even approach serious, when it comes to SU. Although this sure seems like a step in the right direction.
Thank you SU team, let's keep things moving this way.

RE: Danial Tal's new Sketchup Book
My copy is suppose to arrive tomorrow. I'll write about it as soon as I read it.

RE: Any word from SU about toolbar issues?
Are you new here?
Google has done practically nothing on the development end of sketchup since they purchased it. They are completely silent when it comes to any type of future development, bug fixes, or direction the software is going. If it weren't for the recent release of info that they are still developing SU (the collada thing) I honestly thought that they had what they wanted for Google Earth and weren't going to do anything further on SU.
The lack of development is bad enough, add to that the silence policy they seem to have and it really hits a nerve with me. Five Hundred dollars, 2 years with no development, plus a 100.00 dollar upgrade that actually removed some ease of use...It just doesn't give off a vibe that Google really cares anything about SU, or its user community, beyond what it can do for Google Earth.
Sorry for the rant. To sum up Brodie, I wouldn't look for anything fixed anytime soon, if ever.
Prove me wrong Google. I doubt your going too.

RE: Danial Tal's new Sketchup Book
thanks
still no real comments from anyone who has read it. I'll keep checking periodically, that book was just released...still to new I imagine.

Danial Tal's new Sketchup Book
I was just wondering if anyone has purchased Daniel Tal's new book. It looks awesome and was just looking for some feedback before taking the plunge of buying it myself. Last time I checked amazon there were no comments yet.
I guess in particular I'm hoping it goes more in-depth than the hour long google conference he hosted. Not looking to buy a transcript of it.

10 Hour Blender Course
If anyone is interested there is now a 10 Hour Blender course available on lynda.com. It seems really well put together too.

RE: Bonzai 1.0 is released
My experience with it is limited but I was under the impression it was a solid modeler.

Isn't bonzai a solid modeler?
And the people who demo and develop bonzai always look like they hate their lives. Every expo I've ever been to (AIA and ASLA), they glare at me and talk down to me and they glare at eachother, and they glare at people who don't stop and talk to them. They have no excitement in their voice when they talk about their product. Seems like the whole thing is run by zombies. And thats a true story!
Whereas I've never met an unhappy Googler (except the on SU guy who quit/fired? and was pretty bitter and used to post SU hate posts on the forums, forgot his name though).
Chris
Thats not the impression I got. I've been watching their forums for sometime now and they always were very quick to respond to issues or answer questions about their product. (granted it was the beta period, we'll see what happens next). The lack of fanfare for the release of their product has left me scratching my head wondering what's going on....
As far as who's developing it I don't care, zombies, vampires, wolfmen/wolfwomen, at least they are willing to talk to their customers. They show a lot more enthusiasm for their product than Google now does for SU.
Not trying to turn this into a rant. That silence doctrine of Google hits a nerve with me. Not nice Google.

This daily news seems very friendly with the other competition progs
Does BonzaΓ― became a mega Plugin of SU?Well at this point I think we all know Bonzai isn't much of a threat. It's a shame I was really wanting to see someone give SU a run for the money, but it's only V1.0. Who knows what could happen in the furture.
I do think that for it to become a viable competitor they need to do one simple thing that will never happen. They need to release a free version with no exporters licensed for commercial use. That is the only thing that will ever get them the exposure they need.
