Software for remote desktop viewing?
hi guys,
i would like to ask you if you had any recommendations for a remote desktop viewing software (for Windows XP and 7).
i have tried TightVNC a few times, but only in a LAN setting and once when i had my 2nd pc set up with a static IP at a dormitory. i would need this for remotely checking grandma's pc and occasionaly to check in on a rendering machine at work - so both cases have dynamic IP addresses and only one of them has a human on the other side.
i just realized i could try a VPN (hamachi) with TightVNC, but i would still like to know if you have experience with some similar setup and what programs i could try out.

RE: Save render as 16-bit?
so you suggest rendering to vrimage and then convert it... interesting. i'm gonna try it.

RE: Models in SketchUp not showing in V-Ray Render
do you have a screenshot from SU's viewport so we could compare the two?

Save render as 16-bit?
hi,
just a simple question - in vray 2.0, how can i save the output render in 16bit/channel depth? in 3dsmax you can specify the output file format and the bit depth (e.g. 16bit TIFF), but in SU there's only the file format rollout...

Set layers for nested objects
hello,
is there any way to set layers to all nested objects/groups/components in one group/component?
i have a file from multiple workers that i'm compiling and i would need to set everything to Layer0 so the only layering that occurs is the one on the top level (for easier editing).
thanks for any answers.

RE: Why the ruddy Dongle?
well, autocad does provide free student licenses. i think you only need a university e-mail address to get one. (eventually x-forcing it removes the neccessity of manually editing out the 'produced in student product' watermarks, but otherwise it's a full autocad installation)
the interesting thing is - no one uses paid products for school work on any university that i know of. (have you seen a student that could just throw $3k for all the software he actually uses?) still these people become so familiar with these programs that eventually they won't be bothered to learn anything else because they're already quick with the SW they know and just buy the damn license.
for me, VRay for SU uncovered the possibilities of the photoreal visualisations and introduced me to the archviz world. that being said - because a great deal of users still work on noncommercial projects ie. university work, it might just be easier to transfer to 3dsmax & vray 2, where we get RT and proxies (and other stuff like forestpack, railclone, multiscatter etc.) while still building the geometry and components in sketchup.
and this is maybe the weird thing about chaosgroup - while autodesk offers 'free entrance' into their suits (because they anticipate the users will stay with what they will have learned), adobe switched from one-product to subsription licensing (so no effective change there because i suspect they have a monopol for postproduction photoshop & illustrator & indesign being the holy triad), and chaosgroup goes the opposite direction of enclosing the software even more.
maybe this is good - 'learn on the old, pay for the new.' but this strategy is, i think, very risky since autodesk ships the latest mental rays and irays with their product, offering similar performance and image quality.
but i'm not a marketer, nor an economist - these people have done all the calculations. it's just my observation.

Here is a small video showing how it works:
amazing!!!
will this be SU 2014+ only or will it work with SU8 as well? O:-)

RE: [wish] infinite orbit/pan
pretty much what Rich O Brien said.
gif:
ad: 'crazy sketchup zoom' - as i said, i've gotten used to it. the only problem is that it's annoying when i'm working in a large model, trying to edit a detail, when camera starts clipping with the zoom and with the next scroll i get zoomed out of existence, or when i'm trying to orbit around that tiny detail and grab something that's already clipped...
but there's a handy icon for that, with the magnifying glass and the backwards arrow

RE: Export PDF with textures from sketchup?
@pbacot said:
[..] do you mean you want to be able to manipulate the textures, as textures or patterns, in another SW? Is that possible?
basically, yes.
i tried out the Layout's hybrid rendering again, and it's pretty close to what i would like, but the only flaw it has is that the textures (and colors!) are rendered in arbitrary regions in the pdf, overlapping (or underlying) the pdf's lines.
I was hoping each 'closed face' in the pdf would have its own texture, so in a time crunch i could, say, swap every second floor's texture...The main advantages I see is the ability to edit in post processing, and being able to print at both A4 and A1 formats with textures downscaled appropriately and having the crisp vector output.
(or am I behind and in 2014 edition of Sketchup & Layout this already works as I would like it to?)

Export PDF with textures from sketchup?
Hi everyone,
The question is simple: has anyone exported a PDF with textures from SketchUp?
I know that it's even specified in the help file that this is impossible; that the PDF export is a strictly vector matter.
But if you were to do this, what would be your workflow? I'm curious especially in the case where the PDF would be further processed, eg. placing it into InDesign layout and getting a final poster.
One option is to get the PDF from SketchUp, open it in Illustrator, place the textures there and proceed. The other, I guess, is using Layout with its hybrid rendering engine (although I'm not sure how exactly that works). Both approaches require a man-in-the-middle program though.
Could this be done by a plugin? Does such plugin already exist? I'd be really eager to have one for SketchUp 8 (please don't blame me for not keeping up )
I guess I answered my own question, but I would still like to hear your workflow tips.
//edit: also, how is the 'shadows in pdf' issue already 10 years old? https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/sketchup-pro/pCHfcBz0ibg ridiculous

can this be a case of pixel color clamping?
can you post screenshots of your settings (GI, IM, LC, color mapping)? -

Find out what object is a material assigned to
hi,
i have a relatively big scene with relatively many materials (around 30) and all of them are showing up in material editor as assigned to something. however, i don't believe that i actually use all of them in my renders; is there any way to find out to which object is a specific material assigned?

Vray 1.6 matte shadow
hi, hello, just a quick question - is it (or will it be) possible to place an object on a plane and make that plane receive only the shadow from the object so that the whole thing can be put into a hdri panorama sphere? (was my question even clear? )
