Sorry, again, the question is not what they use. The question is what comes native with MAC. We won't really be doing anything much. Painting over something and that's it. It is just a demo. 2 seconds no more. So I just need the path. I'll ask some MAC friends somewhere.

Are you talking about exporting a 2D into something like PhotoShop? Mac's don't come with a built in Image Editor and I can't imagine iPhoto being of any benefit. Graphic Converter is not a freebie.

      Hey,
I've been noodling some organic designs lately and was wondering how Sketchup handles free form objects. Lets say modelling a building inspired by Mr. Potato Head.

Speaking of Cabernet Sauvignon, the region where it is the most delicious in Hungary is Villány - about 30 kms south of my place and 20 kms from the Croatian border.

Here is an "online book" or something with nice images (just keep pressing the right button on evbry page to advance).

Actually, one of the most well known and prestigeous owner and producer there rents my garage downtown Pécs where I live and he even offered a kind of "bartel" business that he'd pay me in wine instead of money. I was really thinking about it but then we agreed on the money business instead. 😄

Another wine region of fame in Hungary is Tokaj (often spelled "Tokay" in foreign languages) which is even part of the UNESCO World Heritage for its wines and viticultural traditions. We even had kings crowned in this particular cellar (which later became the "official" estate and cellar of the Hungarian Crown - the Habsburg dynasty; also emperors in Germany and later Austria).

They exclusively grow white grapes here but certain kinds can only been produced here. Particularly famous kind is the "aszú" (there is not even a foreign term for it) which is called the "vinum regum, rex vinorum - wine of the kings and king of the wines" which was even exported as far as the French and Spanish royal courts although we know there is some wine tradition in these countries as well.

      Thanks Csaba,
My grandparents on my mother's side are from Hungary, but I have never been there. I can see a visit to Hungary and Croatia in my future, when I visit Spain and Portugal later this year.

What can I say... beats working in a bank.

      Hey Mateo,
The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Yountville Selection from Grgich Hills sells for $135.00 USD/759HRK. What does the most expensive wine at a comparable Croatian vinyard sell for?

The question here is about selections. There will always be somebody that has a limited selection from
a good year that will place a price tag on it. But generally a good year, good winery barrique sells around 150-200 HRK - 25-35 US and at the wineyard you could probably get it even 20%-30% cheaper. If you were closer I could send You some to try. These local red wines are really good. Lot of sun on steep hillside.

      Mateo,
I did a little Googling and you live in a beautiful place. Maybe I should visit, buy a little vinyard overlooking the sea. I'm trying to find a local store that sells Croatian wine, no luck yet. My wife spent three months working on a movie in China last year and tried a Chinese wine called Dynasty - they all called it Die-Nasty is was so bad.
BTW I really like your designs for MARINOVIC.

      Hey Chris,
I'm more interested in connecting with some members of the forum who are from countries I normally wouldn't consider for wine choices. Mateo, is a good example, he has educated me about Croatian wine. Hopefully, others will respond, or are all Architects Scotch drinkers - not that that's a bad thing. Maybe Scotch could be the next topic?

Double shot: PD sounds like building design in many ways, especially in the stops and starts, twists and (arbitrary) turns. Sometimes just as tight a design / build. You may have to "document" things while they are being changed in the field. Usually it's no hurry until suddenly it's urgent.

I've been looking around at some of the work people do on this forum. If I want that hand-drawn look, I wonder if it's better to put the trees in my model on Sketchup or in Photoshop?

I ask because I've noticed hardly anyone uses Sketchup trees in their models...

Assuming you are only concerned with producing a 2D illustration you need to consider that once you move from the 3D model to 2D you are committed to things like perspective, light and shadow etc. Which means that any objects you source and add after the fact must conform. I always try to include as many 'ornaments' as possible in Sketchup before it goes into Photoshop or Paint.
Tip: The secret to working in Photoshop is 'layers' - these work differently than layers in Sketchup. Always make a duplicate of your master and call it something like 'master working copy'. Now create a layer called trees or whatever and make sure it is the overlay layer. You can now use the pencil or brush tool to add freehand strokes over the 'master wc'. If you don't like the effect just delete that layer and you have the untouched working copy underneath. When you are happy with the result you can merge the layers and take it into a filter like watercolor or play with some of the light renders.
I also suggest you check out a pen/tablet for drawing instead of a mouse. Wacom makes some good inexpensive ones.
      Play around... be happy.

    • RE: SU in the design process: the matter of “Workflow”.

In my experience as a Production Designer 'rigid' layer-type workflow systems don't work as a departmental framework. Film and Tv production is about budget, time and the ability to turn 180 at a moments notice. The going joke is - by the time it's finally drawn, it's already built, shot and binned. You spend days or weeks concepting a Spanish town and they decide to change it to an African village and still want the concepts tomorrow. It's the nature of the beast. I need to pull people off one thing and throw them into the African village - then it goes back to the Spanish town but the deadline is pulled up to tomorrow because the producer forgot he has to be in divorce court in two days.
You pull it all together and the presentation goes great... then the day before it all goes to camera the head of the studio's girlfriend (who is 19 and works as a personal trainer) comes to set and tells him she thinks it would look better painted pink-ish.

In the Newbie Dept I have just posted this little video (not very good quality - you know of YouTube - but you know what's happening there, I guess)

Are you saying that after making one sphere you cannot get the green inference that I get there?

Yes, that's my prob. I know how to make a sphere, however, in SU7 I can only get the red/green inference the first time. When I try to make another different size sphere the circle tool will not turn red. Not sure why this is happening, it works fine in SU6.

Double - some of my stuff might be relevant. SU and Photoshop. Agree with your assessment that SU can only take you so far though, especially at the conceptual design stage. For basic blocking and perspectives though, it's a great tool.
