Oh ... that's so cruel!
What's the consensus on this thread? Lock it, or just let it go on ad infinitum et nauseam?
This is like mocking the village idiot. I say put him out of his misery.
In Film/Tv design it was Computer Assisted Drafting and started to come into it's own in the early 90's. The table drafters resisted but were eventually forced to move to CAD because of the speed factor. Some of the die-hards were never able to make the switch. In my Art Departments Vectorworks has become the prog of choice by set designers who either switched from table or came up through the biz. Architects moving to set design seem to use AutoCad but the interface with Vectorworks is problematic.
As far as SU goes I use it as a modelling tool during initial concepting, either by extrapolating ground plans or just spitballing ideas. I would never use it for issued building plans.
My last contribution, this is addictive.
Sorry guys... took a wrong turn. I thought this was a Women In Prison (WIP) thread.
Here's my favorite W(H)IP.

Thanks for clarifying Daniel. I note that you say PP and KFC stopped purchasing from the offending plant. I wonder where the plant was located. I suppose that does not matter, what does matter is that the multi national companies did not have a policy in place that monitored these plants. I still feel I will not be buying any KFC as I feel they are not to be trusted when in comes to animal welfare. Being appalled when notified is not good enough
Mike
Good on you! Every journey starts with a small step, Mike.

I think that video is misleading. KFC does not own or operate any poultry farms, but rather purchases it's chicken already processed (butchered) from other sources. The FDA has strict guidelines on commercial animal husbandry, but there will always be the violators. I think PETA has taken a few horrifying, isolated incidences and tried to paint them as industry standard. Remember, this is the same group who asked Ben & Jerry's ice cream to replace cows milk with human milk, 'cause for some reason they think it's cruel to milk a dairy cow.
Are you implying that as long as a corporation doesn't actually produce the 'ingrediants/components' that are used in the manufacture of their products they have no moral or ethical responsibilty?
It is going to happen because I'm going to do it. I'll post the program times here on this forum although it's going to be fall of 09 before it's ready for broadcast.
The decision to use sketchup is part practical and part creative. Practical because we can accomplish more animation faster at less cost and creative because I like the sketchy look. It lends itself to an engineering inspired program which is what our project is.
In answer to Chris: Not so much about resolution as smoothness of the animation flow and how the sketchy look holds
together visually. I've seen enough sketchup animations now to know that it can be done.[/quote]
I hope it works out and will keep a look out. I assume you are talking about creating SU models then taking them into rendering and animation programs. I have seen a number of examples posted on this forum where comic book and storyboard illustrators do this very effectively. Beyond that, I can't imagine using SU to actually create the animation scenes for anything beyond a very basic short. Do you have a broadcast deal in place for this?

I would love to see SU in television productions. I'm very unfamiliar with what is needed though. I do know that for best video quality, most of tend to export a series of png images at 2 to 3 times the desired resolution and then shrink them in a Photoshop batch or in Premiere or the Mac (Movie Maker?) program. It helps get better looking resolution. What kind of specific info are you looking for?
I'm sure others who actually know something will jump in. There are a bunch of film guys around,
Chris
Never gonna happen. Why would anyone use SU for broadcast animation when there are apps. designed specifically for this that make SU look like a flipbook.
The American Big 3 haven't had a progressive thought in decades and the only way they've held on this long is by appropriating German and Japanese technology. The main reason the Gov't is bailing them out is the 500,000 unemployed figures last month put the fear of God in everyone. Realistic numbers run as high as 150 billion to keep these dinosaurs floating. Why not just let them sink, and give it to the employees who will inturn pump it back into the economy by purchasing new cars that will be built by Japanese/American plants.
These guys are so out of touch the first time they showed up in Washington was on their private jets and when the 'methane hit the fan' they arrived in hybrids the next time. Off with their heads.

how do you import a 3D drawing from SketchUp to Kerkythea? It doesnt seem to be the correct file type.
The Kerky plugin will save it as an xml. file and ask if you want to export directly to Kerky.

Hey. I made my own display case and need to add lights inside to illuminate the objects. How do I go about doing this?
You will need to import into a rendering prog. Check these out. Podium or Kerkythea.

Thanks, I figured that there isn't a way to shut if off.
However, I think it would have to be a SU activated dialog since windows would only care that the file was read only when it tried to write to it, and that would be a different dialog altogether.

This permission is set at source. Can you open the file?
With all the talk about the future of Sketchup I was wondering what the three most unique/useful tools are... choose three. One can be a plugin.
Mine are:
1.Push/Pull
2.Follow me.
3.Subdivide/Smooth

I don't think those warehouse bikini girls (even without the bikini) are that great,Tom!
You got that right, looks like fleshtone origami... but in this case she's just a place holder and I can always dim the light.
@remus said:
I remember this being mentioned a while ago, i think the eventual method was using transparent PNGs with a spray image on to get the effect.
I never tried rendering any images like that, though, so might need some playing around to get it looking good.
Thx,
I saw the thread. I had to get this concept out in an hour. Made a cone and painted it with transluscent ribbed glass at 30%. Grabbed a bikini girl from warehouse. Lost the bikini. Tossed it all into Podium. Did the job.
Cheers.
Hey,
I'm doing a quikee shower design and it would be cool to add a water spray. Will render in Podium. Ideas?
Thx.

In my office there are two types of people the striders and those that saunter.
A strider walk down the corridor and a purposefull speed.
A saunter'er' sort difts down the office saying hi to anyone that looks at them.
I personally like to get where i'm going so you could say I'm a strider those that saunter just get in the way.
Slow down. Striders spell more bad and don't make good sentence structure.
