RE: What's the best way ?! [Organic Shapes - Buildings]
could it be done with one component? for example I make some crazy geometry and than triangle component. Is there any way how, to make that geometry from one triangular component?
-
RE: What's the best way ?! [Organic Shapes - Buildings]
Hi guys,
Its possible to make it from same triangles?
So it would be easier to prefabricate and construct (one triangular window)? -

DOD3R, I'm curious about something related to your post. Tutorial videos take time and, as you say, time is money. Would you be willing to pay for those tutorial videos?
I am very well aware that tutorials = time = money. I am sorry a did'nt write it well previously, but I wanted to say that who would benefit most from these tutorials is trimble and they should produce and may be pay for them.
Why I should not pay for them.
I think there is a really little audience for these videos and even less would pay for them it would be really bad bussines.
Why sould trimble pay for them or at least give bigg support for it? Because there are lot of tutorials how to make circle and puspull it. or lot tutorials for chair or whatever. And that is why lot of people thinks sketch up is NOT real deal. And opposite is true Trimble wants to sketchuppers to make houses to build and want them to by build by trimble products. Another way Trimble can look at it is. This is the cutting edge of sketch up usage for architecture. I think really small precentage of sketch up users can really even understand Nicks tutorials. Trimble as a devoloper of a program needs some people to use it on its limits so the can find them and push them little further.
And even another way to look at it is that I belive we can help each other improve our workflows and I hope that even Nick learn something from us by sharing his workflow.Fun fact. I did'nt learn much new things ( maybe 2)from Nick tutorials I was aware of every feature he uses, but I never put it together this way. We need more tutorials witch explains how to use sketch up, but instead we have a lot of tutorials about how sketch up works.

I've actually been giving a lot of thought to this lately. One major aspect of SU & LO that is so remarkable, is how it is so easy to customize a work flow. I've developed one that works really well for me, but certainly may not for others. In what I've discovered, there are certainly some practices that are more efficient than others, yet I will fall back to a process that is more familiar to my given process. I would love to document this in the Rey near future down to the detail that DOD3R mentions. I'm getting pretty swamped with work in the new year, and want to schedule some serious time on opening up LO further. All I hear in the back of my head, is Paul Lee, yelling CAD MUST DIE! This will be a big year for SU & LO in my opinion. I'll try my best to help.
Yes! great.
PS: Sorry for my english is bad obviously, but I hope it make sense.

RE: How does your Country rate in the Software Piracy stakes?
Hi,
I think it nicely coresponds to buying power (if you turn it upside down).
One copy of windows 98 entered India and whole India used that one copy, because its to expensive for people in India and nobody would buy it. You may wonder why microsoft didnt do anything about that. And what could be than If they tried to punish piracy in india nobody would use it and that would create really big demand for new operating system and I belive week after banning windows from india a new operating system would be developed and it would be free or really chep that it would destroy microsoft. So that is why is rummored that adobe, autodesk and microsoft produce cracked versions themself, because of that very reason. They are just affraid of commpetion from "third world countries" And actually I think addobe tried to turn it into an advantage an develops its products in india.and about the artist they actually benefit from piracy, because its really great marketing. And real artist income comes from concerts. Onlyone who benefits from selling cd's is recording company.
I dont know if my story about windows 98 and india is true I read it somwhere on the internet, but I think is not important it pretty ilustrates how software markets works. And I want to say how this can relate with trimble. I think a heard somewhere an interview with Steve Jobs about this and He sad that in 21 century selling software or hardware is not enough, You have to sell solutions. And i thik trimble hit bingo with SU, because it can't probably make many on sketch up, but I am certain that it will make trimble products more usable and help sell them more.
hope this make sense. sry for my english

RE: Texture position question
TIG thank you for your answer. I did little research, but could have been better. I am aware odf your plug in, but as you noticed I want to randomize texture painted on multiple copies of one component. And the workaroud you suggested I use, but I hoped there is better way to do it.

RE: A missive on video tutorials.
hi guys,
I saw some videos from sketch up basecamp 2012 were was sad that you listen to the community. So here it its a opinion.
I was thinking, about my experience with tutorials and learning SU.
Even I made few graphs about it.There are few problems with learning software and tutorials i want to address.
1 - Learning and learning curve costs us time and time is money. When you look at that this way. Its disturbing for my, that how little attention is payed to tutorials and work flow improvements.
2 - SU is so easy, simple, fun to use, that someone can easily fool himself into believing that sketch up is not powerfull enough and it can not be used for complex tasks. And I think is quite opposite. I know a few people who moved to rhino, cinema or some bim, because of that. And I even saw people open it for the first time and say it looks like microsoft paint i cant do serious architecture in it.
3 - There are lot of tutorials on the basics, but number of tutorials decreses with growing experience.I would like more tutorials from guys like. Nick Sonder, Michael Steigel, Pete Stophel. Videos from base camps are great, but I think they just scratch the surface.
New tutorials with nick and LO are real blast, but i think that models showed are great and I would like to se how they were modeled. I believe I could learn a lot. We all could learn even more in following discussion. So what you say ?

SketchUp 2013 wish list
Hi guys,
I just want to share my wishes for SU2013 and posibly hear your opinions. So trimble listen here it is.1 - 64 bi support - obviously you are working on it, but is still biggest hick up.
2 - Native thumbnails of skp files in win8 or 7
3 - foldering layers like in photoshop or fireworks
4 - now that you are trimblers thare is no reason not to make 2d version of sketch up. Many people wisched this over the years. And it would be really simple its already done just one axis less.
5 - Ribbon - what to do with SU interface is question with long history. And I think SU can have little bit off inspiration in his biggest rival Autodesk. Even ACAD is horryble dinosaurs and devolpment of it since 2009 was tottaly awefull, but since than thay did wery good steps. 1- 2008 -> 2009 they realized that it looked bad so they made it dark, pretty and shiny. And even smarter step was taken in 2009 -> 2010 version, where microsoft introduced new ribbon in his office progrem, witch is used by majority of pc users. And autodesk jumped on the bandwagon. I know that SU is developed on mac, but fakt that majority of windows users uses microsoft office and are used to ribbon concept witch is even in acad, is grat fact, because nothing may can go wrong with this concept is allready tested, used and quite frenkly sketch up toolbars work that way but they are still floating around instead being in the ribbon.
so to sum it up my wish is to make new UI more sexy (dark) and i would like to see ribbon for managing tools and plugins.
6 - native export of psd format. with masked components and layers like artlantis renders. What do you think ?
-
Texture position question
Hi,
I was wandering if I can randomize texture positions to avide noticible repetition.
-
Make mask plugin request
make mask plugin request
basically plugin would do: set current style color by layer (viz picture number 4) like this and make selected component on the layer white. It is good workflow even like this, but i allways mess up layers in my model and this one clic solution would be real blast.so what you say to this idea ?
of course ideal would be psd export. with separeted layers and components on each layers, like artlantis renderings have. But i think that suppose to be in SU9 wish list.

RE: A missive on video tutorials.
Hmmm.... perfectionalism is good. But I would be more than happy to see how solo makes his modeling or even nick sonders. Any videos of sketch up work flow videos are better than nothing. Especially when you are native english speaker.
I think trimble would benefit those. i think sketch up evangelism is kind of outdated base camp 2008 vidoes was real blast. And 2012 videos of nick sonders layout workflow is really eyeopening. but what about sketch up it self. I use sketch up for yers now. I can model faster than anyone i know, but still i know I can learn a lot from people like solo or nick.
And is siple equation more happy shinny stuff on sketch up more people will use it. More people will use trimble and that makes trimble happy right ?

RE: Layers plugin request - or just good advice
OK then,
I thought so, but I still wanted to believe in some ruby kung-fu trick - mirackle. -
RE: Layers plugin request - or just good advice
Tomtom thank you for answering, byt i don get it. I made this image. I hope its now clear what i want.

Layers plugin request - or just good advice
hi,
I would love to have option to toggle on - off color by layer and color by material for each layer.
It could be very usefull for postprocesing in photoshop and may other things i think.
Or can it by done somehow?D.

RE: Scenes Wish
I would love to be able export and import sketch up scenes between skp files like layouts in autocad.

RE: Need Help
Hi,
I would go for some geometric construction via intersection with third plane and than measure it with protractor. At least that is, what I do when needed. Finding and using some plugins will be more time consuming, but more efficient if repeated.
