      @TIG said in Component Axis:

If you set the component's axes to match its face then it's no longer rotated at 45° when it's saved out of the model.
Just leave its axes as the default [45° off the face], and then it'll import into another model rotated as you hope, because then the component's geometry is not exported as axial.

Thanks very much for explaining my error.

      Thanks for your time

      Obviously wasted.

Surely not my intent ... just asking for someone to explain what I was doing wrong, to stop it from working for me.

      Thanks for your time BOX.

But know where closer to understanding why mine does not work.

Hoping someone will come along and explain why mine does not work and how to fix it or help me understand.

But your model is a closed version of your saved component and if you open it it will align with the world axis, but if you import or insert it into another model it will be at 45 deg.

The image below is from new drawing / model.
The components were saved to an external folder when created.

      I agree 100% ... not understanding.

When I open in another drawing ... it does not come in at the 45 deg angle.

Thanks ( get some rest, ( smile )

I've tried a bunch of ways to get this and it still 'works'.
As I mentioned we need to see your model or we just waste time guessing.

I try to attach SU file.

Component does not come in at 45 deg angle in which it was created or what I assumed to be created.

    • RE: Component Axis

Thanks for the reply .... basically what you see in above image.

I created the vertical face on the default axis
      Added 45 deg guidelines
Rotated vertical face to 45 deg
Created component and set its axis to the 45 deg guidelines
Saved component in drawing and also saved component to folder to use in another drawing.

When bringing component into new drawing ... I expected it to be on the 45 deg angle, but it is not.
It is on the default axis.

    • Component Axis

Trying to create vertical faces and save as components on 45 deg angle.
Draw guidelines and create vertical face.

Create component and first thing I do is "Set Component Axis"
Adjust the axis to my guidelines.

Bring it into new drawing and it does not come in on the 45 deg angle.

      Help !

Explode the vertical face, use Edit>Cut to cut it to the clipboard, open the roof group for editing, hit Edit>Paste in place. Then select all, use Intersect Faces>With Selection and erase the unwanted stuff.

      Thank you !

@Dave-R said in Cut through roof:

No need for a plugin. Just select all of the geometry, right click on it, choose Intersect Faces>With Selection and then erase the part you want to keep.

Roof is group ... vertical face is group.

Can I select all as is ... or should I explode then first ?

    • Cut through roof

What is the best / easiest way to cut the roof off at the vertical plane I put in,
want to keep the front part.

Is there a plugin that would do this ? ( SU ver 8 )

Would this plugin show only extensions that would work with my old version of Sketchup 8 ?

All my programs are on my C:drive.

Created / saved files go to a folder on a larger D:drive.

      Old habit I guess.

Components live within a file unless explicitly saved to a dedicated location.

Creating a component within a file does not automatically add them to an external library.

Uhhh ... makes sense, and I surely missed it.

      Thank you !!!

    • Components do not save

Yesterday I made a few components, and they appeared in the components list. I could drag them into the drawing.

Today ... no where to be found on my machine.
The folder I had created and was saving to is empty.

Tried making a few today on a new file.
Results are the same, they show up in component list when created ... I can bring them into the drawing, but they are not being saved to the folder.

      Help !

@danna Look at the orientation of the axes in my screenshot.

Give the component gluing in the Create Component panel.

I had tried glue vertical before, but was having trouble setting correct axis.

      Thanks ... working now.

I've set the axes so the component's origin falls on the vertical face of the box.

      Well, spinning my wheels again.

Do not see or understand how you did that.

Not quite sure about setting the correct axis, but will try and come back if I can't get it.
