      Hi enhydra

They should be able to set the "skin" or outer shell to only print a certain thickness. We do it on our little printer and it is a very simple process. Maybe you should just ask them.

      Andre

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way with print services. What you upload is what you get. Print services typically operate on an automated system, and this kind of customization is too much for current systems.

Yep, what Jim said. I'm a long time user of the STL Exporter, without any knowledge of Ruby. πŸ‘

    • RE: Sketchup 9 - a long wait.

Attendees of Basecamp this week tell us that there will be no "Sketchup 9". Instead, Sketchup will update yearly, with the next version being Sketchup 2013 next year.

Sketchup did release some new stuff - a better console for Ruby developers, and an improved 3D printing plugin. You can see that stuff here: https://github.com/SketchUp

I have a "View new posts" bookmark for Sketchucation.

Its easy to make one...just drag the link to your sidebar, and then it works on any page without having to scroll back up to the top πŸ‘

    • RE: How to Vectors -> Sketchup object

I'm not too familiar with Illustrator, but I think there's a way to increase the resolution of the DXF before exporting.

I'm afraid the line cleanup is going to be manual though - lots of erasing 😞

If you need to import vector lines in Sketchup, export from Illustrator to DXF and use this free plugin to import them: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?p=339558#p339558

Roger, I just came across this site that may be of interest to you: http://www.theopencrowdproject.com/participate/

The guy behind the site is using 123D Catch to scan people from all over the world. He recommends placing little pieces of masking tape all over the person to get better results.

      Nice find Rob.

So lets play the speculation game...any guesses on what the 125K sf facility will be for? Think it has to do with Sketchup?

I'm guessing a manufacturing facility for a building of that size.

    • RE: Rapid Protoyping - FDM

The accuracy is very similar between the two - both have resolutions ~0.005", but the print layers are more visible in the FDM parts. FDM is typically used for commercial parts. I think you've made a good choice with ABS as that's similar to what your final material will be.

Quickparts offers both FDM and SLS and their engineers could offer better advice for your particular application.

Edit: I don't have experience with large parts, but the durability seems comparable between the two methods on the small models I have worked on. SLS is more flexible, while ABS is harder and slightly brittle.

In addition to what Dave says, I'm thinking its either the blue faces or the part is too small. To fix the blue faces, just right click on a white face and select "Orient faces".

What material are you thinking to print in? What format are you exporting into to get the quote?

    • RE: Rapid Protoyping - FDM

Stratasys is the manufacturer of most (all?) commercial FDM machines, and they have a print service called Redeye. I toured their facility a couple weeks ago - they have several hundred FDM machines there just for printing on demand, and offer fast turnaround.

Quickparts also offers FDM, and they recently released a Sketchup plugin to upload and get quotes right from inside Sketchup.

I've never ordered from either company, as they're typically ~2-10x the cost of ordering SLS from Shapeways, but have had contact with both and would feel comfortable using them if I needed fast turnaround time. The downside to Shapeways is you may have to wait an extra week for your parts, but that depends on your needs.

Out of curiosity, why do you need FDM? Do you know about other 3D print methods like SLS? They each have their place, so just want to ensure you know all the options. πŸ˜„

BTW, if you need to fix holes in an STL exported from Sketchup, use this: cloud.netfabb.com

Its awesome - just upload the STL, and in a few mins you can download the cleaned version. πŸ‘

    • RE: CNC pattern

Its sounds rough, but you may just have to redraw it in a NURBs based program.

I'm learning Solidworks for this very reason - its usually easier just to start over in a manufacturing compatible modeling app. Luckily I have access to Solidworks at a local makerspace, so I don't have pony up 5K or whatever it costs for a license, but there are cheaper alternatives.
