You completely missed his point. The Newsweek article is saying we need to elect Obama specifically because he's black, not because of his policies. This is liberal guilt, pure and simple.

No it doesn't! What article are you reading? It says that he EMBODIES change which include the fact that he is of mixed origin but that also including change from the existing trajectory US is on.

LOL...what color is the sky in your world?

Not the same as yours obviously. 😒

The rest of the world, for its part, will see something different. America, already said to be on the decline, will look all the smaller for having failed to redeem itself with the election of a young black man with African and South Asian roots and a Middle Eastern middle name. And it will look smaller still for having had the opportunity to do so, yet failing to see the opportunity, let alone capitalize on it and breaking a line that goes back more than 200 years in the United States. To the rest of the world, in electing another Republican America will have appeared not only to extend the agonies of the Bush years, but to have missed a historical chance for which it's hard to find a precedent or parallel in any country: the ultimate triumph of a long-oppressed minority.

Man, what racially-motivated stupidity to say we should elect Obama because he's a minority. If someone said we should elect McCain because he's white, it would be equally stupid. Equally stupid is saying that electing Obama would "redeem" the USA.

Should we elect a black man as president? Sure, no problem - as long as he's the right one. Obama just isn't the right one.

I don't think you understand Rick. Obama isn't just black, he is of mix-origin. In the world of embittered and renewed racial tension across the globe he is a symbol of an alternative. One of peaceful coexisting, post-racial world however unrealistic it might be. Race embodies a lot of meanings for which I am not ill placed to analyse. Safe to say just by being 'black' (which he is not! I hate it when people call him black when he is only half black!) he is already in a position to 'heal' alot of deep seated wounds, and isn't that worth something? If the history of the 'White man' and the 'Colored man' was 'symmetrical' I would be on your side. Fact is, it wasn't so it is completely hypocritical to pretend otherwise.

Rather controversial title of a Newsweek article...addressing some of the ideas that have been sloshing around in my head since the Berlin speech: http://www.newsweek.com/id/166910

Love to know from the world out there, as represented here, if this is at all accurate and/or represents similar ideas you have, thanks?

      Tom,
Just my thoughts: wondering how I would convert my thoughts into words on paper/internet my eye fell on one of the posted comments.
It just about sums it up for me.

Comment: Of course "the world has never watched any vote, in any nation, so
closely"! Do you actually realize the incredible incompetence with which the US
have managed problems (which the US often created on their own!) in the past 8
years? Geez, please open your eyes and stop this unfounded narcissistic crap!

I have never come to understand how you (not personal) could have elected a president so dumb and arrogant, not only once but twice in a row!!! Also a liar in many occasions, surrounded by some notorious liars. It wouldn’t even be that bad if not so many lifes were/are at stake. And that “only” for power and money.

Personally I hope the next US president will be Obama. Not that he will be our/my president. But it could be the change many people all over the world are looking for and hopefully it will bring the US back to what it is. Just a big country (not that many people) as part of a world that belongs to all of us.

Mind you, the US is a nice country with a lot of bright and friendly people. But what a mess you make out of politics and on where you should stand in the entire worldscene. And this country wants to ‘export’ democracy? What a laugh!
And let’s hope this time they’re able to count all votes right, without cheating!

      Wo3Dan

LOL see what I mean. This is how the world views the US under the Bush administration, thought it was pretty obvious. Its time for change.

A new study from UCLA shows that FDR's policies, rather than ending the Great Depression, actually prolonged it by 7 years.

As the US slides towards a depression that ultimately has some of its roots in Dem social policies, do we really want the House, Senate, and White House going to Dems who intend to implement FDR-type government programs?

      Tighten your belts, everyone.

And related to the CRA, I laughed through the tears to hear Barney Frank spew about "reform" and more regulation - this coming from the idiot who for the last 5 years blocked reform of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, while claiming there were no problems with them. The only thing he could do to help the situation is resign.

Even Bill Clinton blamed Frank and other Congressional Dems for the problem. The Democratic Congress has an approval rating half that of President Bush, and we want to elect more Dems? Insanity.

I actually heard this yesterday from my client; a reasoned and intelligent CEO. This is not unlike my "Bar Stool Economics" thread which shows the dangers of governmental interference into basic free market forces. I swear, some left wingnuts actually think they can alter the supply-demand axiom. This is sheer lunacy. Apparently, it's Rooseveltian.

I worry about the current liberal Congress being caressed by what would be the most liberal president we will have ever had. The financial markets will not like this and the worsened economic malaise will trickle down to those 95% getting the big give away. And when that happens, the shit will hit the fan. You think things are bad now? Who the hell would they blame then? Surely not themselves...
EDIT: I did a little rewording of the second paragraph for clarity.

One of the things you can trust in life is for an economist to make up crap theories and predictions. One economist thats bucked the trend is Gillian Tett who predicted that we were heading into recenssion 2 years ago.

Has anyone had experience with SU on some of the GTX 200 class NVidia chips? like the GTX 260 and the GTC 280? I still haven't bought that desktop yet as I am waiting for the new i7Core to come out. Just read somewhere that the slowest one on release will be marginally slower that then QX9775 Extreme edition CPU 😮, in benchmarks anyway. I can't wait.

"Why are we here? How did we get here? What does life mean?"

These questions I've never trusted, as they all have a "hidden pretext" (hope this makes any sense 😄 ). For example: "why are we here?". The question sounds innocent enough, but it actually implies there must be a reason for us being here. It's only a small step to the concept of fate (predestination) from there. And to the concept of an intelligence (God) thinking it all up in advance.

I'm not doing a very good job on explaining this, I think. Any native English speaker feel like getting all Wittgensteinian on the above questions?

Stinkie I know exactly what you mean. Our language have evolved to accomodate linear causality to such an extent that there are words like WHY which is a particular nonsense word because it demands the answer to be a linear one while most problems are nonlinear (i.e. it can be in different number of states and produce vast number of outcomes) in the world we live in. People ask the wrong questions. More approperiate question would something like how or by what processes did we end up being the way we are.

I have always lived in the USA but apparently I have been missing a couple of things all these years:

#1-I always thought the President had 1 vote that really didn't get counted anywhere but in the polls and elections.

#2-He had a veto pen, but I learned that Congress had the white-out to correct his mistakes.

Actually he has a lot more power than that my friend:

Article 1 and 2 are from maintream news agencies such as the BBC, Times, and Guardian. Why don't you do a little search. The BBC hates the US, thats news to me. AND OMG didn't you get the WHOLE POINT of the article!??? He was saying the CURRENT ADMINISTRATION is crap! US had GREAT LEADERS which we all admire! HOW DOES THAT CONSTITUTE HATING THE US!???? Bush DOES NOT represent the US everybody knows that. Are you just reading lines to confirm what you want to hear?

Yes, I got the point of the article: Americans are stupid, fundamentalist religious idiots. Sounds quite arrogant and more than a little hate filled to me. But, what do I know, I'm just one of those uneducated Americans that you've been brainwashed to hate. Your "man" never gave a single reference for his comments. You, George, and your comrades won't be happy until America is full of atheist, global warming zealot, secular humanists, that believe the universe revolves around themselves. Elitists like George don't realize it, but they have their own religion. The religion of atheism and secular humanism.

Just because you read something from a news agency doesn't make it true (this is an example of your naivete). You haven't give ANY proof of your allegations against Bush or Cheney. You haven't given any proof that Cheney is lining anyone's pockets. You give only allegations and opinions. Allegations and opinions aren't facts. The fact is that the surge in Iraq is working. If you don't want to hear it from unbiased sources, here's a left-wing, biased source that even says it's working: http://www.usatoday.com/news/military/2008-10-30-iraqnews_N.htm.

First of all BBC isn't leftwing nor is the Times. (The Guardian adminited is, and I'll give you that) Truth is we as news readers are not really in a position to know the truth as information are already interpreted for us. I am merely conveying what I've read down here. I can't care less if you think Secular Humanism or Atheism is a religion (which are both laughable however thats another topic) because I am a Posthumanist. You've even mistaken me for being hispanic (Juan 🤣 ). Clearly I am CHINESE! I thought that much is obvious from my portrait. Clearly you've formed an image of me from this particular article that doesn't vaguely resemble what I am or what I believe. I don't hate the US. I love the US (just not the current administration, whats so hard to understand?). Most people from my homeland aspire to be like the US. The Chinese Dream is not disimilar to the American Dream albit with our own characteristics. What we can't believe is that you've elected such a nitwit into office (I argue with my fellow countrymen about merit of democracy all the time and they just point out that Bush Junior is in office and I am left speechless because I don't know how to defend this kind of atrocity). You have to remember US was doing fantastically well in terms of World opinion during the Clinton administration. This isn't just a sentiment shared by most people in Europe and China it is the PREVAILING view of the US throughout the world if you just bother to ask around.

I am essentially trying to create a 3D Terrain and overlay a 2D cad file over the terrain to illustrate how the proposed development works with the terrain.

Have you tried the drap tool? Its the icon with little circle over contour under the contour tools.
