thank you for letting me know about the Cycles renderer... I was going to ask you what it was but then googled it and was blown away πŸ˜„

Cycles is a "fully integrated physically based renderer", and from the videos I've seen it really delivers..

      Check it out!

    • Spiral Stair Railing

Hi Everybody, I set up a quick way to draw the railings for a spiral stair case, and wanted to share my workflow with you. When you download the file, you will be able to model the side of this staircase:

      spiral_staircase.JPG

Just using geometry principles and the bend tool found in Fredo Scale tools. So.. if you think you need something like this, download the file and check it out πŸ˜„

    • RE: BIM SKETCHUP

I have only recently found out that there exists a plugin for Rhino that adds BIM tools to that program, it is called VisualArq. It's nice because you still have the freedom of rhino, and you can add parametrical elements such as stairs, walls and so on.

I dream of something like this for Sketchup, because I use BIM mainly for its ease of modeling base elements

      Hi,
maybe you already solved your issue. It seems to me you have to adjust the intensity on your light, otherwise it will always render as black. Also, check to see if the light is enabled πŸ˜„

    • RE: Most stable version of Vray??

I don't know if it is the most stable but the 1.49.01 version runs really smooth, both on windows and on Mac. Only thing you may encounter some solwdowns in the mac installation, but it otherwise runs very well.

      I hope this helps πŸ˜„

    • Strange behaviour in Sketchup, and how I solved it

Hi all, here at work we just encountered a glitch in Sketchup's behaviour. I'm posting it just to describe the problem and how I solved it.

Modeling a staircase, Sketchup started doing this:

      strange_sketchup_behaviour.JPG

Making it impossible to get the job done. Also, when I click on the blueish faces that appear on the outskirts, I get the face on the other side selected.

This problem presented itself on two different machines with different graphic cards (nvidia and ati). Also, turning off open-gl acceleration was of no use. It seemed we had a corrupt file, then I tried one last thing: I opened a new Sketchup window and dragged the file on to the scene... problem solved!

Don't ask me why.. I just know that now I don't have the problem anymore, I hope this news is useful to somebody πŸ˜„

    • Shooting Range - Dirty tricks

Hi everyone, I just wanted to show you a little job I am doing, and a little trick I used (after having Insights from the Sketchup For ArchViz book by Robin De Jongh) in a view:

this is a view of the shooting range when it is open and functioning:

      http://www.3dita.it/michele/004_zona_tirosmall.jpg

The wooden elements you see on the sides are part of a mobile divider that can close the opening (the shooting line is not covered by anything) so you can transform the inner space in a conference room. The problem was, those chairs you see are a bit heavy, so I came up with this view of the conference setting:

      http://www.3dita.it/michele/006_allestimentoconferenza_small.jpg

But what is really going on is this: πŸ˜‰

      http://www.3dita.it/michele/007_2dchairs.jpg

For the unexperienced: I exported one chair in a new file, set a front view of the rear of the chair, and then saved the resilting image. I used the image as a texture on a vertical plane, thus resulting in a "Card" that represents the rear of the chair.

I then duplicated this card, and I cut away the upper part, to have a representation of the front legs with depth in perspective. I made the two cards into a component and then distributed the "chairs" in the hall. 😍

If you don't put your point of view too high, you can even orbit the scene and see the "chairs" shift the perspective accordingly!

I hope you like this little trick πŸ˜‰ have fun!

      Ciao,

This plugin is Great!!!! I don't know how I would use in arch viz (oh wait... tv on with images, rain outside, ANYTHING outside windows, fire in the fireplace) but it's really something COOL.

Did they tell us about the new transparency thing at the BaseCamp? If so, I don't remember about it..

mitcorb, thanks for the heads up.

I had to change my location in Windows, in that way I got to disply Sketchup in Italian... It is a bit strange tho I have to go through all this to have it in my original language... oh well, at least I know I can switch to and from English at will

      goodnight everybody!

So on monday I'll go back to the post office, pay again, and keep the receipt in a safe after sending a scan to the vendor. So sometime in the near future, I hope, I'll have the d.. Sketchup pro version 8....

I read this too late and I really hope I am in time!! Did they send you the license number for the Sketchup you already bought??

If so, you could download a pro version from here:

      and use the information.

    • Big Problem - Lost in translation

Hi there, I should be back! And a Ciao to everyone I met at the BaseCamp πŸ˜‰

I hope someone can help me: lately I installed an English Version of Windows 7 64 bit, and then proceeded to install all the software I use, including Sketchup. I installed version 8 free, in English, because I am used to use it in English.

Problem is I now have the need to use the Italian version... I downloaded the Italian version, and made an install over the english one that already existed... to no effect! When I start Sketchup it is still in English!! Is there any way I can tell Sketchup to work in Italian, or do I have to uninstall the English version?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, I'm going mad!!
