Since I found this an interesting discussion, at least for me, I made this video, showing how I drew the molding door on Jeff's hints. I hope it will be useful and interesting for someone.

in America AAA is for American Automobile Association but many companies who want to appear first in the phone book directory choose this as their name. it used to work for web directories as well.
it can also be used to draw a picture of pretty mountains... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I have the same problem. I've checked there are no hidden objects.
I've also exploded all the components so there are no component origins in random places to confuse things. I've also purged all unused geometry, components and layers. Still no joy.
Any ideas?
If I had to build it now I'd probably follow your way, but the woodworker who built it was probably in the artistic vein that day!
Meet tomorrow on Skype!

Is there any work around this bug or is it game over whilst using Sketchup 2017?
The only work around that I know of would be to make the texture in an image editor or use an actual image of plywood and import one of those as a texture.
Unfortunately bug fixes in an older version are incredibly unlikely after a newer version is released. At this point, about 6 months beyond the release of SU2018, it's safe to say there won't be any updates to SU2017.
