    • Sketchup start up problem

      Hi all,

A fellow on an italian forum has a problem every time he starts Sketchup 8 (free version). It doesn't mantain the saved template and toolbar and the Welcome page is always shown even if the "always show at start up" icon is deselected. He has Sketchup installed on three computers. One is ok, two with the problem.

      What could it be?

Thanks Gaieus, anyway I guess I can figure out an effective way without the precise movee tool, at least until I decide to upgrade.

Yes, this is exactly what I was trying to do. I think that I have to create more reference points since the tiled pdfs when matched must look as the large one. I think that the precise move tool refers to LO 3. I'm still working with two and sometimes I notice that is not that easy to position a model exactly where you want.

    • Tiling a plan from a large to a smaller sheet

      Hi all,

I have a question on Layout that I'd like to solve with your help. I need to prepare a plan in two formats. The first come on a large sheet, let's say 18" by 24". This plan is then tiled in smaller sheets of 8 1/2" by 11" that a client must rebuild like if it was a puzzle, to obtain the same large plan. This is done to permit the customer to print at home his plan.

I was thinking of preparing some reference points in SketchUp so that the sheets can be overlapped and joined correctly to form the large sheet, but I find it hard to position exactly the scenes on Layout.

I'd like to find a quicker procedure. What would you do?

    • RE: Bedside Table

I quote Dave's advice and I'd also add that it would be better to add doublers glued to sides and kickers to give more strength to the piece. As for using Kreg pocket holes, I wouldn't do that. Here in Italy they are much advertised but I really don't like giving to such a nice piece so many screws. Go for tenons or try biscuits. If you can't help but using pocket holes, use them where it's the only possible solution for you.

I agree with chrisjk, Dave is a geek in using SketchUp. Much of what I know about SU was learnt from him. So, thank you once again Dave! ๐Ÿ‘

    • Roubo style workbench

      Hi all,

A couple of years ago I built a new workbench for my shop. Itโ€™s a Roubo inspired workbench, not the original, because I use a Record type vise.
Iโ€™m very happy with it because itโ€™s very efficient in its use. Having the legs flush with the top lets you increase the clamping surface and also the sliding dead man serves a good job, holding long pieces that I need to hand plane.
Here are some pictures I took during the WIP.

Yesterday I completed the plan in metrical units for the construction. If you go to my blog you can freely download it. Itโ€™s a zip file that contains two files: the pdf plan and the SketchUp file.

If you're interested in the inches version, please drop me an email.

      I hope you like it.

As always, comments are considered encouraging and so are well accepted.

    • A blog on Sketchup

      Hi all,

last month I opened a new website where I have some plans available and I also run a blog on SketchUp. I'd like to know your opinion about that and in particular:

      1. what do you think about the website?
      2. Do you think the posts I inserted until now are interesting?
      3. Is there any particular topic you'd like to see there about SketchUp?

I'm asking you, people of the web, because you are the ones that can really advice whether I'm doing well or not. It is my interest to grow up and make the website an interesting place to visit. I realize that I'm only at the beginning, but you know, there's always a start.

I hope to hear from you! ๐ŸŽ‰

Ah, I was forgetting the last thing...don't pay too much attention to my English... ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Sketchup web exporter issue

Hi, I've used this plugin for my website and it worked fine for the first three models I exported. Now I have two more models that after selecting the plugin become very little in the frame and have a rotation point that is not on the model.

I attach a screenshot so you can better understand. Any suggestions to fix the problem?

I consider the Erase tool a great tool to speed up erasing, even if sometimes my finger is faster than my brain and automatically goes on the del key rather than on the "E".

      @gaieus said:

Of course, a downside of using guides vs. real geometry is that you cannot protect some guides while deleting others from the Edit menu > Delete Guides.

But could be useful if you edit a component and use guidlines insidet it, because the others outside guidelines won't be affected if you erase them while the component is open.

You're probably right Dave. People often tend to be conservative on things they know and think they can handle easily. So, why changing should be better than remaining on what we already know? But I'm also convinced that once learned a new method this could help us on working better.

      I'll be there on sunday.

      Cheers.
