Most annoying SU behavior

That's odd. It must be a PC thing because the Mac version (or my Mac version anyway) starts with the selection tool. A windows bug?
Edit; Is it something to do with how you've saved a template as? I always make my own template. Perhaps the default starts with the line tool, and making a template, to get rid of Sang, would leave you with the selection tool, which is then saved as a tool pref with the template?
Are you sure you don't have a plugin installed that modifies this? because there is no option in SU nativly to set which tool SU should activate by default. It's hard-coded to the Pencil tool.

Nope (I am 100% sure!).
To be honest, I've only got a couple of plugins installed, and that's not one of them. Try saving a template with a tool ready to use. It's just an idea.

No - it's not model specific.
-
Well I can't explain that at all. But my default is always the select tool.
edit, I'm still on 7.1 btw.
-
Could be yet another one of SketchUp's "consistencies"...

My Mac always opens with Selection tool, on 6,7 or 8. I don't have any plugins on 6.

how about that. I just fired up my own Mac.
sigh why do they keep on doing things differently for the platforms.... -
It's a bug then? But for which platform? I can see the usefulness of SU starting with either tool.
-
I wish it was the Select tool that was default, I use that more often than the pencil.
-
I have used RickW's simple fix forever... http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?p=281923#p281923
-
When I first open Sketchup, even from selecting a skp, it defaults to the "Selection Tool". Once Sketchup is open, and when I open an file from File > Open, the file opens with the "Line Tool". Perhaps the confusion is simply circumstantial.
-
must be a windows thing. :0
Thanks TIG for the script - works perfectly.

I find it annoying that the program always opens with the line tool instead of the select arrow.
When I first started using SU 3 years ago with V6.0 on my PC, that was the very first thing I complained about in a previous forum.
I was directed to a Ruby plugin fix.But the select pointer SHOULD be the default startup pointer, not the line or any other construction tool.
It makes no sense otherwise. -
Unwanted lines that cause disappearing surfaces when deleted. As far as I can see the disappearance does not always relate to lines bounding areas. Sometimes it's because a surface I did NOT want was formed mysteriously.
I just know that I tried to do a table top, and eve3ry time I rotated the view I would find surfaces gone, surfaces appearing etc.
I actually find that5 creation of surfaces a nuisance: sometimes you just want lines.....this IS "SKETCH-up"
Colour me old fashioned and maybe I need that "paradigm", but I want to be able to create and delete surfaces as I require, not at the whim of the programme.

Just found this out.....apparently SU doesn't like having to share resources with Adobe Reader. While I have one or more pdfs open SU doesn't want't to open. I have to close the pdfs and then it works and if I open pdfs again while it's open then both the open and save windows don't appear when I press the button.
This is new behaviour as I haven't noticed it until today. It might have something to do with the fact that I unistalled Adobe Reader X yesterday because it was unstable and reinstalled version 9.40 which works perfect...but now this happens........ugh software..... -
Re selection sets:
You could always save/update all your scenes without any layer visibility stored.
Then you make a few scenes with only the Layer visibility stored,
like L-All, L-NoPlans, L-NoModel and so on.
I do this all the time, as it saves a lot of time and frustrations when working on big projects with lots of layers, versions of dwg-imports etc. -
OK.. No bro's.
Must just be me. Sorry guys. This kills SU for me

honestly, this sounds like mistakes on your part.. uploading a model which shows the behavior you're talking about would help understand the problem better but i think it would be more about people pointing out errors you made instead of sketchup errors.

meh.. there are apps out there that work the way you describe.. more times than not, you want the surfaces to auto fill and having to manually fill in surfaces from edges is more of a headache than deleting an occasional undesired surface.. if you want to do a lot of line only drawings in sketchup, use wireframe mode.. surfaces will still be formed though you won't see them.. before you exit wireframe mode, select all the lines you'd like to keep as lines only then copy (ctrlC on windows).. switch to another render mode which shows surfaces then edit->paste in place.. only the lines will be pasted.

While it may not bother me as much as it does OldNick, the "always make a face" aspect of SU can be annoying at times, especially when fixing problems inside geometry.
Especially now, using Solid Inspector, where I have a number of internal errors, I will temporarily delete an outside face to see and get inside the object. If the problem is in any way connected to that face, and I fix the problem, the face reforms. Not exactly a terminal action, but it does get tedious after a few times.
But then the most exasperating thing is when I want to reface the very same perimeter and IT WON'T.Then there are constructs that I do not want a face, but they form automatically every time I modify the perimeter.
A solution is the "NOFACE.rb" where you select the perimeter and click NOFACE. It will define those perimeter lines not to form a face, until they are reselected and the FACE command is clicked.
Any RUBY magicians want to take that one????? -

Any RUBY magicians want to take that one?????you can use Edge Draw from Rich's pen tool to do that if you're just using the a line tool (ie- this won't work with the circle tool for instance)

and hey, good to know that rich is a magician now
