Personally I would opt for a Nividia GTX Cuda enabled card. I have the GTX 980 but you can get a cheaper card that does an amazon job. Stay away from AMD!! But this common rendering engines as KT/Twilight/Thea/ (or others) are specialized to use CUDA ? I know there are some used for dynamic lighting and real-time rendering, but I'm not using such software... Thea will have GPU rendering relatively soon (most likely with the next revision). As it's CUDA based, a nvidia card with as much ram as possible is needed. I'd pick some 6xx with 4GB RAM (also 5xx card will do). Naturally Thea will continue to work just fine with CPU too. About AMD vs Intel, with heavy multithreading AMD FX-8350 is somewhere between Core i7 2600K and 3770K from Intel (based on multiple reviews, note. with some reviews it's between Intel Core i5 2500K and i7 2600K), so it's possible that will FX-8350 give more bang for buck, when used in rendering (multithreaded).

This kind of stuff is invaluable to us Newbies who are only just gtting to grips with Push/Pull . There seem to be 2 front runners in the "Ease Of Use" category, Podium and Maxwell. I'd be interested to see which of these two most of you think is actually the easiest to use (not necessarily the best at rendering, but simple for someone with my very limited skills to use) keep in mind grizz that this thread is nearing 5 years old.. while much of the info still applies today.. some of it doesn't.. NNOOOOOOOOoooooooooo!

without any additional info about the system and further description of the problem it is impossible to tell you anything... this can have many reasons hardware failure (power supply, mainboard,...) overheating malware corrupted windows ... Have you already opened the case to check if maybe the cpu fan has stopped running or is covered with dust? If you're not able to give this information, take the system to a pc-service or buy a new one...

@matte said: "Luckly" for me I have to probably wait another 2-3 months before I can pull this off anyway, ... If you will have to wait 2-3 months you maybe should wait one or two more and buy a Haswell based notebook... i think i would be worth it. http://www.anandtech.com/show/6355/intels-haswell-architecture And add a (good) SSD! It will speed up your whole work.

You can buy Kinect sensors at around the same price on ebay. Some as low as 50 some over 100, but not that expensive in the grand scheme of things, particularly if you already own an xbox.

I forgot to mention that in the original post. I actually tried a few things and that was one of them. I didn't time it, but it may have sped it up a little. Overall, I don't think it did what I was looking for.

So... at the risk of injecting some sense into this extended diatribe... It's almost certainly not a 'SketchUp bug' - that is, something that is inherently wrong with SketchUp... Many users of v8, high-end PCs and NVIDIA cards etc have no comparable issues. So what is specific to your setup that might be implicated in the issues? Cable length could be. Unless using a much shorter cable has been shown to still produce the issues, then the current cable length is still a suspect. The card's drivers might also be suspect. The latest driver might have some unexpected side effects; have you tried rolling back to a previous one? If so are these issues still the same ? If this might be an NVIDIA card/driver bug then what have they said on their forums? As the issue seems to occur when v8 and another app are loaded in tandem does the unloading of one of them relieve the issue ? What has been said in the other app's forum ? Does this issue occur on all PCs in your organization that use the same card/drivers/v8 etc. If not, then perhaps it's a specific System / configuration issue ? Issues like this are difficult to track down, and are often the combination of several overlapping minor problems, seemingly unrelated at first sight. They can also manifest themselves in other totally innocent applications. This doesn't mean that SketchUp v8 is innocent, but it certainly doesn't demonstrate that it's a 'SketchUp bug' either. The guys here have no reason to 'hide' anything. SCF is independent of SketchUp, those offering advice do so freely and in good heart. Falling into side arguments about this being a bug or not, or trading insults about whose got the bigger dick better experience, doesn't advance a resolution of this issue on iota. Get back on track please...

I do have Kerkythea Echo Boost installed on my laptop and my desktop. I'm still learning, but i'm getting fairly adapt to using Kerkythea. I always pick 8 cores when rendering, although like I said, it renders great. Its just the setup process. Kerkythea seems to hang and take forever to navigate the model and make changes. My desktop has an i7 2600 and Kerkythea runs very smooth on that.
