Windows 8 IMO!

So Windows 8 has been released, anyone bought yet?
I have pulled the trigger and upgraded my laptop from Vista to Windows 8, I had used the preview version for the last 6 months and everything was stable and fast.
I did a full clean install this time and it was very fast and easy, all hardware on my Sony Vaio laptop was found and all is running great, surprisingly I have new Nvidia drivers, something I was unable to upgrade through Sony nor download directly from Nvidia.
I do not think I will be upgrading my desktops very soon as Windows 7 works great for my needs and no need to fix something that is not broken.
Getting used to the lack of a start button took some time but now I actually prefer having a home screen with the apps I use daily available fast, if I need to use a program that is not a daily app I simply left click my home screen and it's there and neatly sorted.
Internet explorer 10 is also a surprising improvement in Windows 8, it is fast and clean.
So I can definitely recommend Windows 8 if you are planning to upgrade, it's faster than 7 and very well thought out. Compatible with every app I use, in fact I'd even be willing to say things run faster now.

I plan on upgrading my wife's computer this weekend but I want to wipe the HD and start fresh. Is this what you mean by clean install Pete?
Glad you like it. -
Eric, no I did not wipe my drives as I purchased the upgrade and not full clean install version, cost me $39.99, It does wipe your drive when installing however, after it confirms you have a previous version of Windows.
-
Yeah that sounds like what I want. Did you have to reinstall Office, SU, Thea etc.?
-
Yes, I had to install everything, if you are upgrading from 7 to 8 then you can keep all your programs and files, otherwise if you are upgrading from XP or Vista it's a clean install.
-
Ok thanks, I appreciate it. It is an XP machine so I will have to reinstall. Now I just have to find my MS Office discs...
Edit: Amazing, they were right where I thought I put them in '07. That is a first

That is because you have not got married since'07.

(I cannot find anything and when I ask my wife, she keeps telling me "it's in its place" but fails telling me where that "place" is)

Hey Pete, I noticed that Win 8 is not supported with Microsoft Security Essentials. Looks like Windows Defender comes with 8. Is that all you think you need? I have been very happy with MSE.
-
MSE is not needed, Windows 8 defender does everything, it's awesome.

Well that was painless. Quick install and Office installed even faster. Only a few applications that my wife needs to download and install. Sweet.

I found a gem,if you want the start button back in Windows 8 here is a way: http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/
I am using it and it's perfect.

Is that the "start" button where Windows users go to stop (quit) the system?
