For the most part, yes we have freedom of choice, limited by our means and environment. However, when looking at history, I cannot help thinking there have been some individuals whose destiny was predetermined. Also, if one believes in the Bible, then there are times when someone's actions are affected by Divine intervention.

That's what I call covering all the bases.

      Darrel,

It's not obvious to me what the benefit of prepping is. The granularity of the resulting shape is still determined by the original edges, is it not?

      Thanks,

      Darrel,

I'm delighted to see you back, and I'm excited that there's a new version. Would you mind explaining a bit about the new options?

      Thanks for this.

Voder has said about unsmoothing the line. How do you do that?

Unsmooth (or unhide) = Ctrl-Shift-Eraser. You can also just select the smoothed line and move the slider on the Smooth/Soften dialog all the way to the left. You'll want to display hidden geometry while you do this so you can see what you're doing.

Using a projected image can result in undesirable distortion, so here's another method that wraps the image instead of projecting it.

Well, now that you've explained, it obviously makes sense for the rest of the Americans on the forum to accommodate themselves to your situation. If only you'd mentioned this sooner.

      Baumeister,

Take a look at the resources page at the SU Help Group website, and you'll find several sources of tutorial videos, some of which are downloadable.

Also, it's hard to say what you might find if you were to Google the term "download youtube", although it might be interesting to try.

    • RE: Help with Roof

      Gaieus,

I have not responded to this request for help before now because I am totally confounded by the Z-fighting, and I'd like to figure something out. The first thing I tried was to scale the thing up to a realistic size. It's almost as if the inches should be feet--multiplying everything by 12 seems to yield reasonable dimensions.

Unfortunately, that didn't help. The Z-fighting is as before and seems completely inexplicable.

Finally, smorales02, adding a roof on those buildings doesn't seem like a big deal. What is the problem you're having, exactly? Have you gone through the many video tutorials that are available? Are you saying you don't have any preference as to the style of roof? It strikes me as odd, too, that you didn't mention the terrible flickering/Z-fighting, or ask for help with that. Didn't you notice?

    • RE: Section Cut perpendicular to view

Okay, Al, but it sounds like you do want all four section planes perpendicular to the ground plane.

As far as our slight semantic mixup, you did say initially that you want to "add a section plane perpendicular to the current view." I think it's rather natural to think of the "current view" as whatever is on the screen; therefore, anything perpendicular to that would appear edge-on.

      @wo3dan said:

Although your explanation of (an approximation of) the rotation angle about Blue is a correct it is still just one rotation angle. You forgot the tilt. The section plane generally needs two rotations to align it to the screen.

Wo3Dan, sorry, but I think your logic is working in reverse. Al does not want to establish a viewing plane: the viewing plane is given. He wants to erect a section plane perpendicular to the viewing plane, not parallel. I'm taking the section plane as a vertical plane containing the line of sight, so its inclination to the ground plane is not a consideration.

Perhaps Al will clarify this point. Indeed, perhaps he will even reveal what he's up to so we can get a better understanding of the constraints on the problem.

    • RE: Section Cut perpendicular to view

Consider: the rotate feature of the Move tool displays a protractor that is calibrated in absolute degrees from positive red (east). Therefore, you can get a fairly close reading of the direction of your line of sight at any arbitrary rotation by:

      1. Turn off Model Info > Units > Angle snapping
      2. Create a circle centered on the system origin and group it.
      3. Switch to parallel projection
      4. Using the Move tool, grab the rotation handle (of the circle group) closest to screen up or screen down.
      5. Rotate the circle until the protractor guide line exactly coincides on-screen with the blue axis line
      6. Read the angle from the VCB.

Once you know the rotation of your line of sight from east, you can rotate a section plane to that same angle.

Not really. I'd say there's one for each facet of the cylinder seen edge-on and one for each side of the sawtooth pattern you cut out. Hardly infinite, or even thousands. More like a few dozen or less I'd say.

      susketcher,

The profile lines on the flame are numerous, but not infinite in number. If you're somewhat patient, you can keep rotating the thing and hiding them until you've hidden them all. Using wireframe to see them, Ctrl-A to select them, and a hotkey to hide them, it isn't really all that time consuming and tedious, say, compared to knitting a sweater.

In fact, here, I've done it for you. Just be mighty sure you don't get inside that component and hit Unhide All, or you can do the redo yourself.
