    • Semi-newb in search of pro advice and help! (Light-Up Q's)

      Hi all!

I am in a real pickle. I have a huge city I have modeled but I havent used SU in a while. I wanted a basic rendering proggie so I purchased lightup. The problem is I have no clue at all about light up and I dont know where to start. What I want to know is:

      1. How can I reduce the size of the file I am working with? I am working on 300mb files and its a burden on my cpu.
      2. How can I reset lightup? or how to remove it all together?
      3. Can someone please help me with some very basic Lightup settings to get a "semi realistic" rendering? I really have no idea what to do with this and I just want something basic to get me started.

    • RE: Lightup noob questions

Im still having a lot of problems with light up.

-Lightup changes the colors of a lot of my textures
-Lightup seems to have problems rendering some of my components, some houses have transparent roofs, some entire buildings are missing. As soon as I turn off light up everything looks fine again.
-I still cant make the points light work in my city. Do they have to be a part of the components them selves or can they just be free floating??

    • Map a keystroke to a mouse button?

This is a totally random question but everyone here seems very computer savvy so I figured it was worth a shot. I want to map a the letter T to the side mouse button on my mouse. Anyone have an idea of how to make that happen?

    • RE: Lightup noob questions

I lost the post but thanks for this info!

I tried jacking up the lumines(?) of the bulb exponentially but as far as I can tell they just are not "on". This is highly annoying for obvious reasons. Maybe the component im using is broke / wrong? Where can I get a known good point light component?

    • Lightup noob questions

How do I reset everything? I seem to have set some materials to emitter status then forgotten which ones. I just want to start over.

Also my point lights dont seem to do anything. THe emiitter works "ok" but the point lights never emit light. Any ideas?

    • RE: Random noob questions part deux

I might be able to do something with offset. If not I can get creative with multiple protrudes.

Now about these pesky layers. I can see a list of layers in the window but how do I add a group to a certain layer?

    • RE: Random noob questions part deux

Yep once I was shown how to manipulate the texture everything fell into place.

      Now yet another question:

How do I scale a bunch of planes PERFECTLY. What I want to do is this:

-Trace a bunch of buildings on a map then Protrude them.
-Then I want to select the tops of all the buildings and duplicate those horizontal planes.
-Now I want to scale them down porportionally just a tad and paste them back on top of all the buildings.

This would let me push pull the tops of the buildings to give them some detail. I tried the above steps but when I scaled down the roofs it didnts scale them down right so they didnt fit perfectly back in place...

    • RE: Help With Protrude

Does the color of the faces you select to protrude tell it what direction to go maybe?

    • RE: Help With Protrude

Here is a mini file. I cut it out of the big file and tested protruding it in a brand new file. It still goes upside down BUT it actually works properly instead of truncating the buildings like before. SO i was able to cut and paste it back into the main file as a workaround.

Still id like to know why it does into the ground...?

    • Help With Protrude

Ok so I was using protrude fine for a bit then all of a sudden it started protruding things the wrong way. It makes the boxes protrude down through the ground instead of up toward the sky. I tried to fix it by putting in negative values into the dialog box but that didnt work either.

I really need help on this because I based my entire city mapping project with the intent of using protrude. Thanks in advance.

Gah when I go to reposition / scale the texture its very hard to control. How do I scale it only. Then rotate it only etc? The pins are all multifunctional and its wobbling all over the place.

THANKS!! These tips end up saving me so much time i really appreciate you guys taking the time out.

      @unknownuser said:

      1. Slow down! SU layers are quite different to PS layers in that they only control visibility. Layers in SU do nothing to separate geometry. You can start messing around with layers by going window->layers. The golden rule: "Always model on layer0." Move geometry to other layers after youve grouped/componented it.

I guess I have been doing something very similar to that using groups and hide. The way you describe it layers are nothing except groups with a visibility toggle switch? Im not saying thats a bad thing at all just trying to be clear.

    • Random noob questions part deux
      1. I have a map of a city I am trying to model. Whats a good way to stretch the 2d map on the ground so I have something to trace? When I try using the map as a material I get 10million little ones where I just want 1 huge one.

      2. Ive heard talk of "layers" which I presume to be a 3d equivalent of Photoshop layers. How do I add things to layers and toggle layer visibility?

      3. How do I save my plugin tool bar layout? Its annoying to reposition them everytime I load.

    • A better select tool?

The select tool is cool and all but it would be a lot better if I could draw with something other than rectangles. Ideally id like a freehand version of the classic select tool and any other bells and whistles would just be icing. Does such a thing exist?

    • RE: Grass + Sketch Up + VRay

So I dont need to use those clip and diffuse maps to get that nice grass effect? I tried just applying it like any other texture but it doesn't look like the screen shot at all. It just looks like any other grass texture.

    • Noob resource question

Does it use more resources sketchup to leave your models ungrouped / non components? I have a large city project I am working on and if I select a lot of planes / edges at once it crashes. I have 4 gb of RAM and a new dual core intel if that matters. Also Vray and Lightup simply crash sketchup when I try and render a large project.

What are some pointers for keeping projects small enough to be rendered? I am currently now going through my huge project and slicing it up so I can hopefully render some nice things...but its really slow and I had hopes of being able to get a rendered view of the whole city from the top ahh well I guess I will have to rely on good ol' Photoshop for that. If only I could convert some of my Photoshop know how to Sketchup!!

that grass looks super awesome. I have no idea how to use it in my models...ive never heard of the terms "clip" and "diffuse" maps used in this context. Regardless that grass looks very realistic nice work.
