Seems Blender can make the same than Max even more for 0 $
Blender is the SU of Max
In five years I bet that more people use Blender than Max!I don't know Max at all, but generally speaking Blender follows with a bit delay the other commercial products without adding real innovations, even Blender's people say that it can't be compared to the 'bigs' , eg zbrush for the sculpting, nevertheless Blender offers a very wide suite of tools (modeling, rendering, animation, compositing...) to get professional results for 0$ as you say that i Believe has no equals in the CG world.
I'm trying to learn it for a couple of months but I have to say it's really really harder than sketchup, especially having a CAD mind-set like mine -

Max toolbars stay where you leave them.absolutely this is a good reason to buy a 3ds license.
seriously, if you're going to be a professionist you must also consider what others (clients and mates) use, eg here in Italy I see most of architects use 3ds although they don't always need it, I also see many bad works done with 3ds and think: I can make much better with sketchup... but if I were an architect maybe I'd use it because of the interexchange of projects

RE: Vecchio Carillon
wow! I'm embarassed for such compliments
have I done some step up the ladder?
The placemat is made with clipmap alpha + bump + diffuse channels(KT doesn't provide displacement) using the same texture previously modified in Gimp for the several uses
The mirror is a matte/phong with layered textures (this inspired me) in the specular and diffuse channels.
Thanks all

Vecchio Carillon
Hi all,
for a pretty long time I didn't play with kerkythea... so I've done a little scene
C&C are welcome as usual -
RE: Downtown
Hi! the scene is well done, to me, but... any further info? it seems you've used some render engine.. but the image looks pretty like a raw SU view. And what's the purpose? I mean if you're working for a photorealistic scene there are so many issues yet...

RE: I introduce myself
Ciao Andrea benvenuto!
It's a pleasure to see new italian users, I guess italian section is not too livelybut with a little practice using online translators you won't have problems.
Ciao -
RE: Escher
mmmmm...
I love Escher, nice one! It deserves more care, I think. Not the model, of course, but materials and environment could improve a lot.
cheers -
RE: Tridem's WIP with SU and Kerkythea
Your comments are precious as always Roger.
I always draw in scale 1:1 , I knew little objects may have problems in SU but never tested myself.
I don't believe the scene needs a coloured light (if I understood well...) there's a spherical background with a room image and some point lights as you can see in the plastic reflections so I think the one to fix up is the plug. Having not given it a radius in the edges did was a mistake
I'm almost thinking to rework all the scene from scratch... almost, time it's never enough -
RE: Tridem's WIP with SU and Kerkythea
Hi Scott, actually I wanted show it like some brand new product rather than a realistic one, so I don't agree about the scratches. Also I like the reflective surface very much.
About the laying of the keys I know it's strange, but I worked around for a while and cannot able to find a better position,I should have been using sketchyphisics to solve definitively.
Thanks anyway, I really appreciated your comments -
RE: Multiple scene renders
you can disable the scene transition in the animation settings (model info window)

RE: Tridem's WIP with SU and Kerkythea
thanks Jeff for so many compliments
You're absolutely right about the plug, I set a bump map since a metal sheet cannot be so 'flat' as a mirror but something has gone wrong and I did not figured out why, I get often problems with UV and scale settings in Kerkythea, expecially with the procedural bitmaps -
RE: Tridem's WIP with SU and Kerkythea
Let's change subject...I did this scene some months ago, but I'd got troubles with the steel brush mapping, now I believe it works somehow
