    • Cast Glass Material

      Hello!

I am trying to model a piece of cast glass, which is essentially very thick glass. The problems I am having are the following:

1: how do i achieve the look of white "bubbles" floating within the tinted glass?
2: The glass should look tinted. Do i apply this tint by applying fog to the refraction layer?

I have attached pictures of the desired look.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

The initial results look fantastic. I'll keep you posted with more questions.

    • Stainless Steel/ Lighting

I am attempting to render a range hood in a kitchen. It is brushed stainless steel with polished steel straps. The inspiration image demonstrates the materiality I am going for. Why is the brushed stainless so bumpy in my rendering? How can I achieve the look in the inspiration image?

Also, any advice regarding how to get better lighting? I have can lights in the ceiling (omni light settings attached) and rectangular lights under cabinets, behind windows and various places in the room. How can i get nice even warm light without post-production?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

    • RE: Lighting Issue

Or actually the floor washed with light is fine (if the noise is brought down) and may look better than the floor on the bottom. I just want the floor to be uniform. Thanks!

    • Lighting Issue

I cannot seem to figure out why there is a random arc of light on the floor. Does anyone know what this might be? I ideally want the entire floor to look like the floor at the bottom part of the image.

I have omni can lights in the ceiling, rectangular lights outside the window and under the cabinets and the sun turned on. There is also a ton of noise I do not want on the top right part of the floor.

      Any help is appreciated!

      Two more things:

      1. The attached photo is not a rendering. πŸ˜„

      2. I have tried adding spot lights to the scene but is very difficult to get even light. I end up with HUGE hot spots on the facade.

Does anyone know how to achieve the lighting in the attached picture? I have a facade modeled and i would like to wash the surfaces with soft light. Any tips would be appreciated!

    • Renaming DefaultMaterial Causes Bug Splat

When I create a new material in the material editor and attempt to rename the material, an error message pops up that says- "In vrayforsketchup.get_skp_material_by_display_name, couldn't find existing material named: DefaultMaterial" . I then press "ok" and SketchUp crashes.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

    • RE: Splotchy Cabinets

      Hey Matt-

Thanks for the response! I am using SketchUp Pro with Vray (both licensed). Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to post the model. Any tips in general to render off white painted cabinetry/ millwork without getting the harsh splotches? I want soft looking surfaces with crisp shadows on the millwork details.

      Thanks again!

    • Splotchy Cabinets

      Hello,

Any ideas why the cabinets look so splotchy? I cant figure out why they're reflecting so much light. I don't have a reflection layer on that particular material.

Also, the cabinets lack definition partially because the edges (on the doors for instance) are simple lines. It is possible to render the edges of cabinet doors when they are drawn this way.

    • Exporting to AutoCAD

I am using SketchUp Pro 2014. When I export a 2nd line drawing (an elevation of a wall for instance), the back edges export as well. I do not want to see the back edges in the AutoCAD drawing. Any ideas how to export just the lines that appear on screen?

    • Modeling Furniture

I have started to model a proxy of this Restoration Hardware chair. My SketchUp model is attached. The geometry may seem totally disorganized and inefficient because this is my first ever attempt at creating a proxy for Artisan. Does anyone have suggestions for where to go from here? I have been testing Artisan's subdivide and smooth, though the results are not great. I'm not so worried about the tufting. I just want to be able to eventually render in V-ray and have the shape look spot on.

      Thanks!

    • RE: Tufted Chair

On the second Alvis page there is some really great work. I would, however, greatly benefit from a brief description of how each step is achieved. For instance, from photo 1 to photo 2, are the grid lines drawn manually or is there a plugin to create the grid lines? How are the vertices selected and moved? How exactly do you get from step 3 to step 4. I'm sorry, but just seeing each step without a description doesn't explain as much as I'd like.

      Thanks for you help.

    • RE: Tufted Chair

I appreciate the direction. However, for a novice sketchup user, it is difficult to follow these "step by step" screenshots without explanation of the exact tools being used/ buttons to press, detailed description of workflow etc. I have no idea how to even get to step one. It is not explained too well in Alvis' posts.

      Really great work Alvis!

Let's say I want to get to the point where I can model upholstered furniture at the similar level. What plugin/ technique should I start with? What is most critical to start off in the right direction?

It would be awesome if you could at some point make a video on youtube showing your technique, because you are very talented.

      Thanks for any advice!
