• RE: Texture shifting... why?

I had an older version at home. And the shifting happened there as well.
It also happened on the tree trunk itself.
I'm baffled by why this happens, as I've not had this problem before. I wonder if it could be related to geometry with hidden and/or soften lines? (Wildly guessing here. Only semi-relation I could think of.)

Yea, the tree leafs are thrown on very oddly. But I expect no-one would make a close up of such a low poly tree. I've used it though to test out the V-Ray render plugin, so I've added some more details to it. extruded the single line branches etc.

At least now I know that it wasn't just me doing something weird in SU.
I might try some more scenarios and see if I can track down the triggering factor for this behaviour and submit a bug report.

Thanks for your help.

Ah yes! That worked like a charm!

Export leaf component.
Open file.
Position Texture.
Reload component.
Bob's your uncle!

😍

You just made my day!

Now I just need a seamless birch bark texture....

• RE: Texture shifting... why?

Just had a quick go at copying to a new file, exploding it. Then creating a component again. That worked! Got no idea why.

However, is there a way to replace all component instance with a new one?

hmm... and you did the same as I did?

my SU is 6.4.112. Pro version.

I'll have a look at the file you gave me later on the day. Need to finish something else first.

Thanks for helping out.

• RE: Texture shifting... why?

I created a new material from the Material Editor.
I them applied the texture to both the faces with the Bucket tool.
I then positioned the texture on each of the faces.

The component is Tree_Deciduous_Birch_Summer_HighPolygon from the SketchUp bonus packs: http://sketchup.google.com/bonuspacks.html

I replicated the issue in a new SU file with just that component in it.

I've attached a screenshot series of what happens.

(Sorry for the image zip, but it wouldn't post due to height restrictions.)

• Texture shifting... why?

I'm trying to apply a leaf texture to one of the SU 3D trees. However, after i've placed the texture on the leaf and positioned it as I want it then shifts out of place when I exit the leaf component. Every time I enter and exit the component the texture position will shift again.

Anyone care to enlighten me on why this happens?

That's a really nice model you got going there. I've had the browser windows open with the screens from them and I keep skipping back to them to study the details over and over.
Sweet-o-licious!

Tina, I was actually going to ask what roof tiles you are using and how you solve the high-poly problem if they are modelled. And what do you mean by "boosted"?

Boosted is when they use more mortar under a portion of the tile to make it look raised. It's really pretty when done right. You'll find it alot in Mission Architecture. I'm sure someone out there has the whole history and origin behind it πŸ˜„ I am a woman of few words (which my husband appreciates πŸ˜‰)

<!-- ia0 -->Boosted-Barcelona-2.jpg<!-- ia0 -->[/attachment:cef5irog]
<!-- ia1 -->2377.jpg<!-- ia1 -->[/attachment:cef5irog]

The component is from FF and it is very taxing. I usually wait until the last minute (if I can) to put them on and of course have to turn those layers off if I actually want to continue working in the file. πŸ˜„ But the effect on the finished rendering is very nice. Not so flat and when you start playing around with the sketchy styles the roof really starts to "pop".

If the render engine supported displacementmaps, would that produce a sufficient result?

Yet another great addon! πŸ˜„
I really like the Proximity script. Same kind of function I'm familiar with from 3DSMax.

I love how SU can be extended so easily. Like Firefox, addons makes it such much more invaluable.

Doh!
Never mind my previous post about not being able to use it. It was solely and entirely due to faulty user, not plugin. (Which I suspected to begin with... 😳 )
When I saved it I saved it in one of the subfolder of the plugin folder. No wonder it didn't turn up.

I tried the script and it works just like I wanted! πŸ˜„ Thank you very much for taking the time to assist me.

@Anssi
Yes, it does become a large model. However, a texture won't work as some views are close up. (Though I could have modelled that separately, if only the views was fixed.) The whole thing is a study of the faΓ§ade surface so I need the detail. Fortunately they just gave me a new computer at the office so the computer can handle it. πŸ˜„

I did end up deleting very thing my hand. But since things often change quickly I wanted to see if I could get my hands on a tool that let me do quick test of various setups. Quick and dirty prototyping. In a more final stage I'd do it by hand to ensure better control.
I fully understand what you're saying though. Thanks for your input.

@TIG
Thanks for that script. But I've not been able to try it out. I don't find a way to invoke the command in SU. I had a look at the source and see that there should be an menu item in the plugins menu, but none appears.
I know PHP, JS, VBS scripting, so I can read parts of the script, but I've not done any Ruby yet so I can't spot the issue. (Or could other plugins be interfering?)

I should set of some time to learn Ruby and the SU API as I figured it'd be a simple loop iterating the selection. I can see that it'd be useful especially to perform special repetitive tasks.

• RE: Photo match

@sorgesu said:

Great video, but there is a crucial piece of information missing. You cannot grab any photo from the internet and expect Photo Match to work properly. It will not work on a photo that has been cropped and you have no clue whether the photo that you have grabbed from the web has been cropped. You must work with original photos with the viewer standing in the the center of the photo horizontally.

Next, photo match works best when there is a corner of the structure toward the viewer at a 45 degree angle. Other angles may work but 45 degrees is best. For an interior, you would want the back cornter to be at a 45 degree angle.

Aidan also very quickly mentioned the grid style.Make sure that you are using a grid style that matches your photo. If you are doing an aerial view, for instnace, you want a grid style that is the top down one and not the defualt architectural one. Just make sure that the photo isn't cropped or it won't work.

What if the cropped area is proportional to the original image and placed at the centre?
