RE: Autodesk and Sketchup
Autode$k is rubbish, the arrogance of
theretheirsales people is unbelievable, no love of modelling there and they simply ignore you if you have after sales problems. SU is cool but the real killer is Archicad. Best program I have ever used by a mile/1.6 KM expensive but completely awesome. -
RE: Modeling a dog.
I would not get put off by the shape It is all quite basic geometry and simple machining.
The shape of the leg is basically a 'Squashed' baseball bat, scaled down upon its longest axis. This could be achieved with the "follow me tool" It is basically "Lathe" in other programs. Then a bit of it is removed by putting a box or plane against the "leg" and look at 'intersect faces' to remove the box or plane leaving a flat bit on the lathed leg to fit against the flat side of the body. You are subtracting a plane or box from the lathed leg. I have attached an image of basically how you could do a leg. It is not in proportion though.Hope this is some help

RE: 3D printer can build a (real) house in 20 hours!
I think a few brick production companies will be doing Patent searches right now!
I think even Mr Kodac may be looking into it -
Ever wanted a 3D printer
Hi guys, the below link will take you to the Rep rap main page. Basically can build a 3D printer for about $300. The thing is you get some of the plastic components for free from people who have recently built one, In exchange for you passing on parts to someone else who is in the build phase, made with your finished printer. Cool idea, Kinda self replicating...V cool

RE: Best Computer set up?
Hi Tony, firstly my 'out clause'....I am definatley not a computer guru . I have recently posted "what graphics card" (might pay to check out that thread) I was having the same issue as you. I am now running 16 gig of RAM with a gainward Z77 nvidia 660 on a high speck
quad core I5 3.4 GHZ. I WAS running an small AZUS graphics card. When I changed to the "bells and whistles" Nvidia 660 not much changed. . I am assuming you are doing commercial developments/streetscapes, as I sometimes do which end up being BIG models, you wish to turn on shadows to set them for rendering....."sketchup not responding" If that is the case it seems Sketchup itself is the limiting factor and it does not have a big GPU dependency at all.
I hope the developers can do something about this as it seems to me computer graphics/RAM/processing has caught up to the limitation of SU for large Architectural models with lots of detail. Thats my experience for what it is worth. Click on this link.http://www.vtc.com/products/GoogleSketchUpPro8/Introduction/99227

RE: How to set default dimensions?
isnt it easier to simply "choose template" when opening SU?

RE: Looking for rendering
Hi Task, you should look at this post just a few posts down from yours in the newbie forum "Have you ever done a poll on render software" the questions you are asking is quite well covered there
Cheers -
RE: Hello Everyone!
Hi Carla, welcome, and enjoy, this is a great forum that actually works

RE: How to form hills that flow across multiple faces?
Hi Bpear, I think you may have put the cart before the horse here.
I think the workflow should have gone like this:Build the terrain.(sandbox tools) When you are happy with that "drape"(sandbox tools) the road layout over the terrain. This will fix the road to the terrain. Then place the buildings on the new terrain.
If there is a way to manipulate the existing planar Landscape, without causing all sorts of issues, I for one be looking on with great interest.
Just in case: window/preferences/extensions/click sandbox tools.
Cheers

RE: Shadow problems fix needed
Dave....Nice hat!
Was desperate and working to a deadline on a full-on streetscape job.

RE: Have you ever done a poll on render software?
Hi grizzler. I am at a loss to explain how that model could be 40 MB. I would say with the amount of faces i can see it should be way below 3MB. I know that is slightly off subject but you must get that under control. Just a basic thing have you tried shadows... window/shadows...try turning them on for a start.

RE: Have you ever done a poll on render software?
Hi Grizzler the file size is 40 MB!!!!???? something is wrong for a single house and landscape to be 40 MB. Think you need to check the size of some of your components.
Can you download some 2D images to see what we are dealing with? -
RE: Have you ever done a poll on render software?
"I've always been reluctant to do this as it makes me feel really inadequate when I see what you chaps are capable of"
*No need to feel like on this site, that is exactly what its here for.Your attachment did not attatch though.
Are you aware of the: windows/styles/assorted styles Not photo realistic (Kinda sketchy but cool)I am thinking you are after somthing more photorealistic, but good to know its there if you do not already.*[/i]

RE: Shadow problems fix needed
Thanks Carsten! That was spot on, I actually did that myself a bit earlier. It seems that unchecking and checking the Open GL 'use hardware acceleration' seems similar to: "have you tried switching it off and on again" a classic trick!

Shadow problems fix needed
Hi Guys, In a previous thread 'what graphics card' which centred around how to improve my computer specs' to improve my comuters performance, as when I turned on shadows in a big model the program stuttered and became unresponsive.
I now do not have any control over shadows. when i go into shadow settings 'on face' etc are greyed out and no longer an option. I have attached an image where i am now having problems with shadows on even the simplest model. Any ideas about what is going on?(edited) It seems it is not known why I am having these issues due to the lack of replies. So I think the answer may be to reinstall SU but would prefer to repair as last time i uninstalled i lost all my customisation. Is it possible to repair rather than uninstall and reinstall?(edited)
Thanks

I think solo's idea was a good one

RE: What graphics card?
Hi Gaieus, I have attached an image which has a "no" under shadows. does that mean that the GPU will not assist in the graphics aspect?
Oh and I only turn on shadows when I an about to render (with default styles only) but usually dont get that far on this model (not responding)
Thank You

RE: What graphics card?
Hmmmm, just been looking around and have found sothing thats says the video card should be "open GL" I have treid to read up on this but my learning curve is exhausted on this one can anyone explain if I need to worry about "open GL" for my gainward geforce gtx 660
(nvidea)Thank you.
