No, the tool resides under the File menu. The donation to Samuel is in the Extensions menu.

Donation are entirely up to the user.

Yes now I see. I did watch that video showing you how to import, over on the left at bottom. But first donated a dollar trying to get it to work. No wait.. I made a mistake and requested a dollar first, then donated and cancelled the request. But I tried it on a chair and it worked. It insists that you assign a material though, before it will import. But it's great. Now I am going to try a large complicated HVAC Obj model; we'll see how that goes. Thank you!

Not sure exactly how to reply to your post in the right order. But anyway I finally imported my FBX chair file with Skimp importer, which worked very well. But it's expensive (a yearly charge of $80 I think - Simlab is that much for permanent license). But free for 5 days. So I guess this Universal Importer is a good option. I would just like to know, is that true that I must donate and then the importer will be accessible (the words "import" will show up when I press Universal extension, under extensions tab?) Thank you.

Okay I got it (Universal importer) showing up in extensions but when I click it it sends me to a donation page. I guess that means I must donate a dollar? I just tried free (for 15 days) FluidImporterPro and my SketchUp program crashed when I tried to import an FBX file chair. I have SketchUp 2017. Not sure how I know this one (Universal importer) will work. Maybe I might as well buy SimLab Obj Importer since that is already installed, from my free trial, and I know it works. Thank you.

Hello: I downloaded it but when I click on it, the computer asks how I want to open it. What do I do now? I have Windows 11 and SketchUp 2017. Thanks.

    • Need A Patterned Glass

      Hi:

I have a weird problem with my Vray (3.6, 1 year subscription). For some reason - and I have communicated with Vray back and forth to no avail - I cannot originate in a model a Vray material that has a map associated with it, nor can I import a Vray texture with a map; nothing happens when I try to attach them. However, if I can get hold of an actual piece of a model that has the material already attached to it, I can paste that into my model and make use of the material from then on. I am wondering if anyone could forward a little piece of a model, a rectangle, anything, that has one or a few Vray patterned glasses (vertical pattern or striped pattern would be best) attached to it. I would really appreciate it. I've been working around this problem in general and have done okay, but now I'm working on a model that features a patterned glass.

      Thank you.

    • RE: Corona Render

We are still waiting for something to happen. If you read the conversations on the Corona Render SketchUp Forum (https://corona-renderer.com/forum/index.php?board=34.0), specifically the last two pages of Material Editor Suggestions and then the entire Kickstarter Project to Fund Development topic, they have never really defintively said no or yes to continued development.

    • RE: Artistic Direction of SketchUp

I really appreciate SketchUp and use it every day. Make works beautifully, maybe better than earlier versions. Sorry to trash the artistic direction! Wish list: Make the selection highlight a thinner line - the thicker line obscures things during the selection process. Thank you.

    • Artistic Direction of SketchUp

My concern is for the artistic direction of SketchUp. For instance, the new orbit symbol isn't as nice as the last one, not even as descriptive. And we have to use this constantly. The "architectural design style" style isn't exactly the same, and not as nice. It can be changed to be more like the original, but why was it changed? It just doesn't seem like a truly artistic person is making decisions for Trimble or is on the staff. But I love SketchUp! Whatever you do don't ever change the perspective system - it's the best.

    • Where do materials reside in Maxwell for Sketchup

I downloaded an MXM material to my desktop, and applied it to my SketchUp model. Later I sent the material to the recycle bin, and then its properties (shiny white) disappeared from my new render of the model, leaving just a muddy brown color similar to what it looks like in the model. When I restored the material, it became shiny white again in my next render. With AutoCAD, Revit and Sketchup, once you applied the material to a model, it was there in the file, no matter what you did with it elsewhere. Is Maxwell different? thank you.

Rendering based on existing project.Daniel: Your elevations look like plates from History of Architecture, which I love. Amazing SketchUp can do this, I think. I'm a commercial interior designer doing NPR interior renderings in SketchUp. A different style than yours but still the hand-drawn look SketchUp can do. Not interested in plug-ins! 😄 I'm attaching an example of what I do.

    • RE: Need thumbnail images in WIP section

The way CGArchitect does it. You see thumbnails and click for a larger image and more information. I really think that's missing here. And the slides format in the official Gallery here doesn't provide clean enough frames for images. Anybody else?

Really love the elevation. I haven't used SketchUp for elevations, just perspectives, but since I'm planning to learn to do working drawings in SketchUp it's nice to know the elevations can look so good.

    • Need thumbnail images in WIP section

I have been trying to suggest that we need thumbnail images in the WIP section, so you have an idea of what you are clicking on. It would make browsing easier and I think more enjoyable. In addition I suggest that the format in the Gallery, of the slides, is a little undesignerly (e.g. the busy rounded corners). A simple full-bleed without borders would set the images off more nicely. Thanks!

That is really good news. I've done many, many renderings, and and am looking forward to using the program for construction drawings as well. Thanks for letting me know.

    • RE: Need thumbnail images

I meant we need thumbnail images in the Gallery, (here at Sketchucation) works in progress (WIP) section. Instead of having to click on each item without knowing generally what you're clicking on. That would make for better browsing.

      thanks!

    • RE: Help! Can't get pro version trial to revert to free

I want to try SketchUp Pro Layout, either the 30 day trial or eventually the student 1 year version, but I am afraid of losing my free SketchUp 8. I found this discussion and wondered if the process is clearer or easier now, so I don't go through what imautoparts went through. I am afraid SketchUp or Trimble will use the trial to disable my SketchUp 8. There is no way to keep the programs separate? Thank you.

It seems to me that to be relevant, we need thumbnail images to appear. Makes for better browsing.
