Try this version, works for me on Mac OSX 10.6.7 and SU 8.
Keys on Mac:
Click where you want the Ivy to start grow.
Cmd+Click : Make the ivy grow towards the mouse position.
Alt+Click : Grow Ivy leafs.
SHIFT+Click : Finish Ivy.
Keyboard 'i' : Start over.

SU Ivy works on Mac

Hi Rombout, I use mac too and for me only works the 0.6 version, the Keys on Mac:
Cmd+Click : Make the ivy grow towards the mouse position.

The line 68 of Lively_tool.rb file is different for Pc and Mac.
For Pc: if key == 73 #i
For Mac: if key == 105 #i
This is the version works for me on Mac

Sketchup Ivy version works on Mac

I have probed 0.6.2 beta on Mac and don't works, i have uninstall all plugins perhaps there was some conflict and it don't works.
The previous version 0.6.beta works on Mac but the leaf are very small and i don't know change the size of the leaves.
One question, on Pc the "i" key is = 73 but on Mac "i" key is =105, can you make a different between "i" key on Mac and Pc.

Now the plugin works on Mac, it's fantastic, the combination Keys on Mac are:
Alt+Click -->Grow Ivy leafs
Cmd+Click -->Make the ivy grow towards the mouse position
SHIFT+Click --> Finish Ivy
The second left-click (third, fourth,......) don't works and the "r" key on Mac is assigned to make a Rectangle.

I have tested the new 0.5.3 version on Mac and now the Ivy window appears and don't disappears, in the first left-click the plugin runs, but in the second left-clic nothing happens, the keyboards combination don't works on Mac and you can't finish the ivy.
The Ruby console is empty, in the image below you can see all.

Nothing in the Ruby Console. I'll try to uninstall others plugins perhaps there is an incompatible plugin.
EDIT:
I have probed to uninstall all the plugins but it happen the same, the SketchupIvy window appears and disappears immediately.

Thomthom, i have changed the plugin to the root /Library/Application Support/Google SketchUp [n/SketchUp/plugins] (generally i haven't problems with the plugins if i put them in the other root) and i replaced the tool.rb in the Ivy subfolder, but the plugin don't works, this is the new message in the Ruby Console:

A very interesting plugin, i have used Ivy Generator by Thomas Luft but it's better if you can make ivy into Sketchup directly.
I use Mac and the plugin don't works on OSX, i hope that you can solved this problem.
