Thanks- this will really help us figure out what is going on. You might just post it here, if you don't mind doing that. Alternately, you can PM Tricia for alternatives.

I don't think we've come up with a number of plugins where it reaches greyed out by bloat. it will happen at some point but I'm not sure at what number of plugins.

I think it might help us to troubleshoot if those of you experiencing the grayed-out context menus could give us a sense of (how many total and which ones specifically) the plugins you have installed.

ty, I read this thread and saw it was somehow plugin related. I thought it was interesting that using the drop down menu to access those commands made them work and might be a useful bit of information.

Another user with the greyed out menu items here.
I drew a basic rectangle an as usual it surfaced backface up so I right clicked and the option to reverse faces is greyed out.
Using the drop down edit menu, selecting the same face, reverse faces is no longer greyed out.

.. interesting to note, I did nothing to change any settings anywhere - thought gee.. I should go get some screen shots since there were other greyed down items on the edit list and it seemed to have fixed itself.. until I drew another basic rectangle and tried again to right click.

Using the drop down edit menu instead of right click seems to fix it.. odd

I know.. I should be in the newbie forum

    • Copy + Scale?

Is there a way to scale and copy at the same time? Say you have a sphere or box and would like to have one a little smaller on the inside that lines up perfectly with the first one.. can we do that with one command? I tried using scale with the Ctrl button.. I think I confused the program.

I wondered why some of my projected textures just were not doing what they should.. position in relation to target.

I know I need to clean up the .jpg.. it was a quickie remembering my fiasco with a beach ball.
      thank you so much!

so.. I can apply the texture without exploding my componant, right? I just have to position and scale it perfectly first on my plane?

    • Yanking hair out over sphere texture

So.. I wanted to make a pool table set of balls. Spheres - no problem. Using Photoshop to make the pool ball textures .. no problem. Getting them pinned on the balls.. major failure. I cannot get - the one ball's circle and number to just appear where it's supposed to.. somewhere it overlaps itself or cuts itself off.

I've tried standard application (my trusty paint bucket)
projection using both show and hide hidden geometry.
I tried using the .jpg as an image, as a texture and as a matched photo

I know I must be missing a trick here somewhere. I think I had the same sort of texture pinning failure messing with a beach ball a while back.
Might someone have a clue what to try next?

ty ty! I looked at those cubes and thought they were for changing line styles face palms

      yeah! no more default colors!

um.. while you're around.. is there a way to kill off most of the default materials that come up in the materials tab that I never use? I set my front and back face materials, yet I do still get 7 (3 grey) materials that I end up purging.

oh and and.. is there a way to make projects that I made with a default template open without dragging that template back in with them?
I just opened a project with my spanking new workspace and thwap default colors and such are back

    • Custom template question

I've just discovered (read in here) that I can set up my workspace the way I want to.. found many of the changes that I can make under the window preferences. I haven't found anywhere to change the background colors (ground and sky) for my workspace. Is there a place to do this? I have been using the random background plugin a lot but sometimes I just want to have either dark or light pallets for a particular model. It will be awesome to not have that girl appear on startup every time. πŸ˜„

Ok.. now I've watched a bunch of the tutorials on skethcyphysics and was all set to go in and start experimenting. I got my floor and a couple of grouped shapes all set to mess with and when I hit play I got an error message

Anyone know what I might be doing to get this error?

I can see myself just playing with this tool for hours. I noticed it said IE7 and up.. what? No firefox?

No - it uses the OS default HTML render engine, which means IE on windows and WebKit on OSX. Many applications makes use of the IE render engine (note - not the browser itself, just it's core) so it's always worth keeping IE up to date, even if you don't use it as your browser.

okiedokie. I generally do that even though ie is just my emergency backup browser and rarely gets opened. I think I declined the beta version update but I know I had 8 on here.

    • RE: What's your beginners tip?

my noob two cents.. lots of places I've seen it suggested that we start with something simple, like a box or a chair (not one of the lovely overstuffed varieties either) I disagree.. my first model was a wedding cake.. tiers, pillars and decorations (unfathomable poly count) but making a box or a square chair isn't going to teach the tools.
My tip is learn the tools. sure, make that box but do everything you possibly can to that box with each and every tool in the arsenal.. if it looks cool - do it again!

    • Attaching surfaces without actually attaching them

      Hi,
I hope this isn't too bad of a newb question. Is there a way to attach.. connect a surface, flat or curved to an anchor piece and give it weight in it's attachment?
I've seen some of the animations done with sketchup and am wondering if they can be rigged to move but not exactly with the base model.. say if you wanted to put cans on the back of a just married car and have them trail along behind but not stiffly.. or an avatar skirt that goes over a body form and moves with it but doesn't stay stuck to one point... or spider webs hanging from a tree and have them float on imaginary breezes randomly, but not blow off the tree.
I wouldn't even know what to call such a tool or function but it would be fun to use.
