    • RE: Sketchup + Photoshop

Office hasn't upgraded to SU6 yet, 2 pt perspective has to be faked in photoshop... good guess though, exactly 60 degrees.

These weren't originally intended for presentation, but client loved them... sorry for the tiny images, just trying to cover myself in protecting office "intellectual property." I don't think that any of you have any intention of using this material to make money, but my office has strict policy; so I avoid it by posting image that's not worth your time to try and market.

I've always been interested in doing more with less. Here are two renders using only sketchup and photoshop. Used the "Dennis Technique" to generate. Let me know what you think and how I can improve the next one.

    • RE: VRay Tests

with the bathtub, you can probably reconstruct it using a polygon with a higher number of polygons rather than using a circle or an arc. if you're taking this into max, you can use the smooth modifier.

as a personal preference, i would change the renderings into 2 point perspectives rather than 3 point perspectives.

    • Can I tag an object with data and color the object....

I guess this is a two part question. Is it possible to add custom fields to an object, for example an object name and color? Can I color an object based on the data in a custom field?

Basically I'd like to use sketchup to do some performance mapping. I'd like to import a file containing a number that identifies an object and a number representing it's performance. Based on that I'd like each object to be colored or shaded based upon that number.
      Is this possible or practical?
      Thanks,
      Mark

    • RE: Greeble plugin for Sketchup?

      Jim,

The greeble script your working on sounds like it might be right for the task I am trying to do, but on a smaller/simpler scale. I have created many outlines of buildings using the line tool (100+ buildings). I now want to select ALL of them and push\pull them to 12feet. Is there a way to do that in Sketch up?

      Many Thanks,

Holy cheese puffs, is that image pure SketchUp? It's fantastic.

The modeling is 100% SU and the render was done in Podium, however I'm still in the modeling stage, I have not even started with the texturing and lighting yet. This is just a press the "render" button render in Podium, all I did is change the time of day. πŸ˜„ If you want to see the progress of this image here is the link where im posting them.

Anyhow, sorry guys did not mean to deviate from the main subject. So... yeah, having a plugin that could do tiling like the floors I modeled would have saved me hours of work, because its not just that you have to draw the lines of the tiles on a plane, but you have to create randomness, then an offset for each tile and them extrude the inside of the offset at various random heights (that was the easy part thanks to "tigs" script (thanks man). So let me tell ya, that was a lot of button pushing. πŸ˜›

I upgraded from a 1.8 GHZ, 1 GB RAM notebook with a radeon 9700 to a 2.4 GHZ, 2 GB RAM, Quadro FX 570M machine and I too am not really noticing any diff. in the performance of SketchUp. What gives?? Maybe the 9700 was a super-underrated card??

    • RE: GeForce 8600GT display issues...

I haven't experienced any display issue since I'm only focusing on how fast sketchup can go with my new system. I still have my old computer running side by side with the new one, so what I did was opening the same model on the two computers to compare using the Orbit tool.. What a shock when I found out that my new PC was as slow/fast as the former one!!

I'm pretty sure that it's a driver problem. Nvidia doesn't seem to be concerned with OpenGl. I know that this is a "gaming card" but it is unacceptable to pay 500€ to see your computer running like it did 4 years ago!!!

      Hi,
I've just built a new computer for sketchup with a quad core Q6600and a geforce 8800GTX, 2Go RAM. My previous computer was running on a pentium 4 2.4Ghz and a Radeon 9700 and believe it or not but there is NO IMPROVEMENT !!!!!!

    • RE: GeForce 8600GT display issues...

thought this should be mentioned... a quote from my other thread over at GSG:

      @unknownuser said:

Display is broken, ie garbled, shifted, and jagged, with Antialiasing ON, and when selecting, AND any floating toolbar is overlaying the model screen area. A key fact to take note of is that everything works fine when I move or close any tool bars so that they don't overlay the model screen area!!!!

I will now add that it is not JUST floating toolbars overlaying the model screen area that facilitate the problem. Any other application window that is set to "always on top" (eg, Task Manager) will facilitate the broken model screen display. As long as I make sure that no other windows are overlaying my model screen area, the problem is gone!!!! And, as I noted above, it is independent of whether I have AA set to application controlled or NV driver controlled. So, with this workaround, I'm able to run AA set to 16xSLI in my NV control panel for a fantastic display (ultra smooth line edges AND no garbled display while selecting). I would be very interested if anyone else could try my workaround and report back whether they get the same positive results?

It actually works for everything except the sky going goofy with dark blue/gray...no more wierd jagged displays when selecting. Hmmmm.

    • GeForce 8600GT display issues...

      Hello-

My office recently purchaced several Dell Vostro 200's equipt with WinXP, a GeForce 8600 GT graphics cards, and Dell 2007WFP 20" LCD displays(at native 1680X1050, 32 bit color depth). We use these workstations primarily for drawing/modelling in Autocad and Google Sketchup and purposefully selected this card because of Google Sketchup always worked best for us with GeForce cards since the app requires minimum openGL 1.5 support.

Here's the issue...whenever we try to employ any sort of antialiasing (2x or 4x) in Sketchup's preferences and then attempt to make a selection in Sketchup, the display goes haywire. This has never been a problem before, and the program works fine on all other machines w/o this card.

I've found on the Google Sketchup groups, that others are also having similar problems with the 8 series GeForce's, so that leads me to believe that there's a problem with openGL in the Forceware drivers. Here's a link to a discussion where other users have experienced this problem: http://groups.google.com/group/Sketchup-Pro/browse_thread/thread/898fbcf57b1d8e97/91150b880cf346f6?lnk=gst&q=anti+alias#

Anyone have any advice or recommendations? TIA!

    • RE: Request for Test Hardware SKP

Boy Kenny that file of yours is a choker!
I came in about 35% behind your numbers.

      I'm running SU on a 17" 2.33ghz MBP w/ 1.5Gb RAM, ATI Radeon X1600.
It's also a dual-boot system w/ OSX & XP Pro and have given both worlds
a go and prefer to work in Windoze-land w/ SU as the performance is better and
have more control over the GFX card's settings. One advantage that OSX has
over XP is that it will export much higher res stills, which I use a lot.
My projects are much smaller in scale compared to you, so I can get away with
the MBP. But after doing these test today I may have to pickup a newer MBP w/
the nVidia GeForce 8600M GT card which from what I read is more geared to SU/CAD
      situations.

I can't leave the OSX world entirely (too much invested in SW).

      REALLY nice model BTW!!!!

      Thanks Gaieus,

That project gives a nice idea of what Sketchup can do and cannot. What system were you using when doing that project?, just to have a reference.

      Cheers.
