      Thanks Jackson,

I'm a bit dissapointed. 20000 faces is quite a low count (that's around 40000 triangles, or maybe a bit more if there are more complex faces). Some 3D trees are much above that number; how do you handle those situations? Using components as a external reference solve those problems?

    • High Poly count and Sketchup

      Hi!

I'm pretty new at Sketchup and I'm wondering how does it performs with high poly count scenes. I'm thinking about something around 7 million triangles. I work on XP64 on a Q6600 quad-core with 4GB of RAM and a 640MB video card. I don't know if Sketchup benefits from 64 bits systems, if it has a poly count limit or any other kind of limitation on that side.

      Thanks a lot.

    • RE: Finally got my new mobile workstation!! Tell me what you thi

I figure I'll update to Vista about a year from now when it will be more easily compatible with all of the programs I use (primarily ACAD, SketchUp, Photoshop/Illustrator, 3DS).

I am in grad school for architecture this year and don't want to take any chances with a new OS that I'm not very familiar with/may have compatability issues. I'll also upgrade to 4GB of RAM when I go to Vista.

    • Finally got my new mobile workstation!! Tell me what you thi

      Thinkpad T61p mobile workstation

      2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7700
      2GB of 667MHz DDR2 (upgradeable to 4GB)
      100GB, 7200rpm HDD
      256MB Nvidia Quadro FX 570M
      15.4 inches 1680x1050 (poss. higher)
      Wireless AGN
      integrated Bluetooth
3 year accidental warranty (includes screen)
      Win XP Pro

      ~ $1,930

I got this instead of the comparable Sager because the graphics card is optimized for 3D modeling/CAD work, the warranty is better and my roomates dad saved me close to $400 with his employee discount.

I think I chose the best thing... its a good balance of power for doing graphics work without being an 8lb. beast that sounds like a vacuum cleaner when its running (the current absolute max. performance books) . Battery life is short but not an issue for me.

      What do people think?

    • Cpu 1MB vs 2MB cache, gpu geforce vs quaddro

      Hey Guys!
I am deciding on a new CPU between core duo e2160 and e4400?
Which one would you recommend? Does cache matter that much for sketchup, If I get a 256 MB geforce?
Also Gefore 8800 256MB vs Quaddro 128MB which one to go for?

      Thanks

    • Sketchup is very slow!

I'v been working with sketchup a long time on my pc, but for a couple of days sketchup is very slow. I can't even deploy shadows on my simple models, because it take's the pc five minute's to do that.
I can't even look around in sketchup, in my simple models.
I have a dual core 1.86ghz, 2gb ram, and 7800 GT Gforce graphics card so that shouldn't be the problem. And I reinstalled google sketchup but i still have the same problem.
Can it be a virus?, or is it my graphics card?
      Thanks in advance!

      Good Evening All

If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure these are Toms (tomsdesk)trees and a few from the SU Forums that have been posted illegally on the Google 3D Warehouse by someone claiming they are his.

Tom have you checked this out or can anyone confirm this ??

    • Better for Sketchup? 256MB graphics/4 GB or 512 graphics/2GB

I am thinking about purchasing a new Intel Core 2 Duo mobile workstation and can't decide if I should get a system with either:

a)256 MB NVIDIA Quadro 570M and 4 GB of RAM

b)512 MB GeForce 8600M GT and 2 GB of RAM

Which would be better for working in large Sketchup models (especially navigating the model while modeling), and a little bit of 3D Studio texturing/rendering? I have been reading a lot of conflicting things on whether video card RAM or system RAM is more important, and whether the NVIDIA or the GeForce is better for sketchup/3D studio.

Also, is a Core 2 Duo the best type of processor for this stuff??

Any help and explanation is greatly appreciated!

    • RE: 2 Mobile workstation options: SAGER vs. ThinkPad... help!!

I guess so. Considering the two have support for the same DX and Open GL versions, the Quadro has to win, especially considering it is the equivalent to the 8600M GT. I would be willing to bet it runs games almost or just as well as the 8600 even, but 3d modeling programs better

    • RE: 2 Mobile workstation options: SAGER vs. ThinkPad... help!!

Ok I did some research... both the Quadro FX 570M and the GeForce 8600M GT support DX 10 and shader model v. 4.0... That makes me believe they have the same DX AND Open GL abilities. Did Nvidia update the 570M recently or something? I don't understand you saying that the Quadro won't support the shading...

    • RE: 2 Mobile workstation options: SAGER vs. ThinkPad... help!!

So, Solo... you are saying the sager is the better value, not just in terms of price but pure power? The Geforce 8600 GT is better overall than the Quadro card? Are Sager's solid laptops? I am tempted by the durability of a ThinkPad...

    • RE: 2 Mobile workstation options: SAGER vs. ThinkPad... help!!

Those Dells don't seem to be a great deal. The Quadro 1600M doesn't seem to be a huge enough upgrade over the 570M...

Hmm. according to here >> http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_11761.html the Quadro 570M does support DX10 and even shader model 4.0. Does anyone have a link regarding this 3dfx shader technology??

      I can't decide on a system!!

    • 2 Mobile workstation options: SAGER vs. ThinkPad... help!!

Ok guys, I have finally gotten it down to two options for my new mobile workstation that I want to order possibly tomorrow... I do a lot of SketchUP/CAD/3DS/Abode and SOME gaming. I make some rather large and detailed SketchUp and 3DS models but I'm not exactly rendering Pixar-quality scenes or anything...

      SAGER

      • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7700 / 4MB L2 Cache, 2.40GHz, 800MHz FSB
      • Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT Graphics with 512MB DDR2 Video Memory
      • Windows XP Professional
      • 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 2 X 1024MB

      • Smart Li-ION Battery Pack (9 Cells)
      • Sager Three Year Limited Warranty

      ThinkPad T61p

      • 15.4 WSXGA+ TFT (1280x800??? Not sure...)
      • Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz 800MHz 4MBL2)
      • NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (256MB Open GL)

      • Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
      • 9 cell Li-Ion Battery
      • 3 year ThinkPad protection service
        $1,884

I know the Quadros are better for 3D modeling but would that even out by getting the faster processor SAGER with the 512MB GeForce card vs. the slower processor THINKPAD with a 256 Quadro, for essentially the same price? ($100 cheaper, actually).

The only other thing is Lenovo offers the 3 year extended warranty on its LCD/etc...

      I can't decide!!

    • Too Radical?

I have been reading all the post about the future direction of these forums and I had a few ideas.

Within the last few days, Coen and this community has recaptured some of the “magic” of the early SketchUp forums. In an effort to preserve this, I propose that this site become less of a technical/how-to site and more of a social hangout. The Corner Bar and Gallery have always been my favorite forums. Judging by the current forum posts, they may be your favorites too.

My thinking is, why duplicate or compete with what is already available. I personally do not think we should try to re-create the old SketchUp Forums and I think we should leave all the technical info, high band-width stuff and how-to questions to GoogleGroups. I think this would save Coen a lot of money on band-width and simplify his life.

Also, I have never liked having to skip from forum to forum looking for the latest post. I know there are buttons for showing all the newest post, etc. But why not just simplify things and dump all of the post into a single forum? I have seen a few other forums that did not have sub-forums and they seemed a lot easier to navigate. Maybe this could look like: The English Forum, The German Forum, The Dutch Forum, etc…I think this could work well with a possible new name that Coen mentioned a few days ago: SketchUnation.

      ….Just ideas.

I think the new look looks nicer but is harder to read. I would like to see the font a little larger. Maybe half way between the old size and the new.
