Another sad day for pro users... the @last forums provided a global wealth of information, help & laughs for professional mannered people. I was very dissappointed when sketchup was consumed by google and this is just another example of the original @last product being stripped of its wealth...
This does NOT encourage the professional use of the software, where to get support you have to join a google group and contend with adverts... how cheap is that!

Ahhh...much better.
Hey Coen, you should consider adding some GoogleAds.

Here! Here! Three cheers for Coen. I hope this new community will be as active and thriving as the former. I vote we strive to make this forum better than even the old one was.

Thank you, Coen, for Sketchucation and this forum. I expect that you will soon be host to a large number of refugees. Let me be one of the first to thank you for your hospitality.

This is my first post here. I'm not yet a SU user but I'm building a system that I intend to use for SU:
ASUS A8V Deluxe (non-PCI)
Athlon X2 4200+
2GB DDR400
WinXP
As for my graphics card, I'm limited to AGP. I'm between the HIS X1950 Pro (512MB) and the XFX 7900 GS (256MB). I can't seem to find a 512MB version of the 7900 GS. Both cards are roughly $150 with rebates.
There aren't but a handful of AGP cards more powerful than these two, for example, the 7950 GT. I read today that NVidia has developed a AGP/PCI bridge for the GeForce 8 series and that an AGP version of the 8600 is just around the corner
Back to reality...
I'm thinking I should go with the X1950 PRO simply because it has 512MB. But I read elsewhere here that Nvidia based cards are best for SU. Perhaps this is no longer the case??
Advice would be appreciated.

I just bought a new HP optical 4 button ergo mouse for my win xp desktop (old gateway, for some reason, while SU will let me orbit while holding in the click wheel, it doesn't zoom when scrolling? the mouse works fine in other programs like firefox...any ideas????
Interesting Planner Dude, I have the oposite problem where the click wheel will zoom, but not orbit or pan! Did you fix the problem by installing the mouse software?
I have a Logitech wireless Bluetooth mouse.
Cheers.

Another Google SU refugee looking for a home.....and yes I must say this looks quite nice. A little bit of paint here, maybe a picture of over there. So nice to see many familiar names again.
I must admit I haven't posted anything in a long time but still like to read the forums. I used to post alot of high poly trees that I used to come across on the web for those of you that remember me. Unfortunately, not much has changed as they're probably still high poly, but hey, they work for me.
Anyway a small re-intoduction. I'm a local government landscape architect in Sydney Australia, married to a great wife with 3 small children and a German Shepherd called Pum-baa.
Great to be online with all of you again. And a big thankyou Coen for allowing me to join your site.
Regards to all
Cheers

A man walks into a restaurant with a full-grown ostrich behind him.
The waitress asks them for their orders.
The man says, "A hamburger, fries and a coke," and turns to the ostrich, "What's yours?"
"I'll have the same," says the ostrich. A short time later the waitress returns with the order.
"That will be $9.40 please," and the man reaches into his pocket and pulls out the exact change for payment.
The next day, the man and the ostrich come again and the man says, "A hamburger, fries and a coke."
The ostrich says, "I'll have the same." Again, the man reaches into his pocket and pays with exact change.
This routine continues for the next several days. Then, the two enter again. "The usual?" asks the waitress.
"No, this is Friday night, so I wil l have a steak, baked potato and a salad," says the man.
"Same," says the ostrich. Shortly the waitress brings the order and says, "That will be $32.62."
Once again, the man pulls the exact change out of his pocket and places it on the table.
The waitress cannot hold back her curiosity any longer. "Excuse me, sir. How do you manage to always come up with the exact change in your pocket every time?" "Well," says the man, "several years ago I was cleaning the attic and found an old lamp. When I rubbed it, a Genie appeared and offered me two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything, I would just put my hand in my pocket and
the right amount of money would always be there." "That's brilliant!" says the waitress. "Most people would ask
for a million dollars or something, but you'll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live!"
"That's right . Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Rolls Royce, the exact money is always there," says the man.
The waitress asks, "What's with the ostrich?" The man sighs, pauses and answers, "My second wish was for a
tall chick with long legs who would agree with everything I say."

How about free laserscan software? all you need is a cheap laser.

I'm very happy with my setup. Not the greatest but definitely a great value. I think I paid $1200 retail 2 years ago. It was one of those note book "desktop replacement" models.
HP Pavillion zv 6000
Athlon 64 3500+(desktop model) 2.2 Ghz
ATI 200M 128Mb dedicated memory + 128 shared w/ ram
2 gigs of ram
100 gig drive
PCI-Express card slot, You can now add an external desktop video card.
PC card slot
4 usb
8 in 1 media card reader
?!firewire?!
15.4" wide screen
Cons:
Battery life 1-2 hours
(that processor runs hottt)
weighs a ton, 13 pounds i think.
Dual channel memory is irreversibly disabled.
I've had it two years w/ 0 problems.
You probably could pick up one of these for less than $500 bucks, add a whiz bang 4 Ghz processor
and an external video card 4 rendering.
And still have beer money leftover
Cheers.

I was referring to the laptop with the shared memory as it seems you favour it.
Thanks Juju. What do you think about the computer I just bought (it is posted above). Do you think if it is a good enough system for sketchup as well as video editing and other daily applications?

if you look here in the hardware forum, i made a post about a overclocker, I just built... about 600 700 maybe
I read that post, but did not want to go through the hassle of buying all the parts and putting together. To tell you the truth, I have never built a computer myself. I know I could figure it out, but I went ahead and bought one from Dell for $690, no monitor.
Thanks
